Pros

1. Video interviews

2. Mostly young people

3. Fortunately, I wasn't hired

Cons

1. The HR person was very inexperienced. They asked me why I left, and I replied that there was no salary increase. They told me they hadn't received one either... So what does that have to do with me?

2. I asked the interviewer how long they had been at Shopee... They said six years, with a break in between... Heh, what does that imply?

3. There is no vendor support; you have to rely on yourself for everything... In that case, I might as well go to an SI myself

People planning to go can refer to this article: Shopee internship is a total disaster!

https://www.dcard.tw/f/job/p/235448556

The news also reported on it—A university student had an internship arranged but was stood up; after complaining online, they discovered that this company was actually a repeat offender:

https://news.ltn.com.tw/news/life/breakingnews/3452899

In summary, Shopee may suddenly stand you up without notifying you that you no longer need to come to work, HR may fail to show up for an interview at the scheduled time, and they sign interns for only three months before trying to trample all over them.

Okay, here’s my own experience with Shopee.

I applied for a management trainee position, passed the application screening and online test, and was required to turn on my camera to prove that I wasn’t cheating (are they really that distrustful of people?). Then I took the GMAT, but was rejected.

I also repeatedly applied for positions through “Slave Bank” [104] and was continually ignored by Shopee HR.

Later, I found the manager’s email address for the position I wanted at Shopee and emailed the manager. Only then did HR call me for a phone interview.

In other words, Shopee HR was unable to properly identify the people the hiring department managers wanted, and kept blocking your applications through 104 until you emailed the manager and finally got noticed (well, it just happened that I had a way to find out the manager’s email address).

During the phone interview, Shopee HR was really obnoxious.

They asked, “Why were all your previous internships so short?”

Why don’t you take a look at how your own company treats interns? You sign them for three months and treat them as disposable chopsticks, and then you ask interviewees why their internships were so short. You’ve got some nerve, don’t you?!

Then they asked how many months of employment gap I had. It was really laughable. HR, try looking for a job yourself during the Wuhan coronavirus pandemic—I bet you wouldn’t be able to find one for a whole year.

Pros

There is a glass of water.

Cons

1. The recruiter conducting the interview was inexperienced and had no clue what they were doing.

2. Had to wait 30 minutes for the second-level manager in the middle of the process.

3. They didn't notify me of the result, which was bad enough, but then the second-level manager called to ask again because they completely didn't remember having interviewed me, and invited me to an interview over the phone again... until I told them I had already been there.

Think twice before taking a job at a company that doesn't consider the consequences of its actions.

Pros

The salary is higher than the industry average.

Cons

I interviewed for a customer service position. For the first-stage phone interview, they called at around 2:45 instead of around 2:00. For the second-stage interview, it was scheduled for around 11:40, but they suddenly moved it up to sometime after 10:00. It felt very unprofessional.

During the interview, the two female managers looked very stern, making me feel that because the company's salary is higher than the industry average, applicants were expected to grovel. This was completely different from how I felt when interviewing for customer service positions at foreign companies in the past.

This is a company I would not join even if I were offered the job.

Pros

There was nothing worth being happy about.

Cons

As soon as I went in, everyone there was young.

The HR representative was very perfunctory.

Later, a kid came in for an interview.

Their attitude was extremely disdainful.

The interview was also ended hastily.

The HR representative never followed up either.

I advise everyone: if you have plenty of time and want to see their attitude, then go for the interview.

Pros

The company is large, and the environment is very clean and comfortable.

Cons

First of all, there are three design-related job openings on 104:

Senior Graphic Designer, Graphic Design Specialist, and Assistant Art Designer.

I applied for the third position, Assistant Art Designer,

but during the interview, I was told that the job responsibilities were actually those of a Graphic Design Specialist.

The interview included a 15-minute computer test.

Question 1: Large B design

A headline, subheadline, event period, and four product images with the backgrounds not removed were provided.

Question 2: Color schemes

PSD files for three themes were provided to test your color-matching ability.

Benefits, according to the interviewer’s explanation:

1. Unlimited snacks, drinks, and ice cream

2. Learning and continuing-education subsidy (after one year, apparently NT$10,000)

3. Fitness subsidy (after one year, apparently NT$7,000)

4. Mobile phone purchase subsidy (after one year, apparently NT$10,000)

5. Parking subsidy (motorcycles fully covered; I forgot the details for cars)

6. Gifts for the three major holidays (no cash bonus)

7. Birthday bonus (Shopee shopping voucher worth NT$3,000)

8. Occasional subsidy for Arena of Valor points

9. Performance bonus (based on performance score; the interviewer did not state the average amount)

Working hours:

9:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. (30-minute flexible start time)

A responsibility-based system; overtime is required when necessary (no overtime pay)

Average overtime lasts until after 9:00 p.m.

Summary:

1. The benefits may appear numerous, but assuming you have worked there for less than one year, the only benefit you effectively receive is unlimited snacks.

2. I can accept working overtime, but I cannot accept not being paid for overtime.

3. The computer test requires completing one large B design in 15 minutes. If this is the standard expected, why is it still necessary to work overtime so late every day?

4. The job responsibilities described during the interview did not match the position I applied for.

Shopee store–smart pickup locations are seriously problematic! The turnover is so high—no wonder they have to hire staffing agencies to recruit people! There are problems everywhere! The shelving time limit is 15 seconds per package! Yet the shifts are scheduled during the times when the most customers come to pick up their packages! The space only allows one person to pass through, but you have to move packages, scan them, and shelve them! There simply isn’t enough time! And the volume is so large! You have to shelve dozens of boxes in one hour!

After being hired, there is one online training session! Its content is completely different from what you actually do at work! Much of what they say during the training is nothing like the real job! It’s seriously infuriating! (Although the online training is paid hourly.)

The PDAs also malfunction frequently! The equipment often breaks down too! Packages often cannot be scanned! And the smart shelving system is completely stupid! It often assigns you a locker compartment that the package cannot fit into! Then you have to shelve it manually! Also, does everyone know why the packages are always damaged and in terrible condition!? Apart from being thrown around during sorting at the transfer stations, another reason is people like the trainer who taught me. He had a portable bottle that looked like a tea flask! The smart shelving system assigned a small locker compartment! It obviously couldn’t fit! The trainer immediately picked it up and repeatedly shoved it in. After several attempts failed, he started slamming it in. I thought the bottle was going to be damaged by all the hitting. I was seriously furious at the time! So this is why my packages end up in such terrible condition—it’s all because of these awful people!

You also have to sort next-day packages! That means sorting several hundred packages in one hour! You also frequently encounter customers who have not scanned the barcodes, or system problems! The work is rushed and exhausting, yet the pay is low. You barely have any time to drink water or use the restroom!

Finally, my recommendation is that anyone with back problems, kidney disease, poor physical stamina, or who is unwilling to be treated like a slave... and so on, should absolutely not come here. If you are looking for part-time work, there are better jobs available! This place has endless demands! The equipment is terrible! You also have to deal with customers and packages! Yet the hourly wage is only the minimum wage plus an NT$8 transportation allowance! You may also have to travel between several stores during your shift! And when there are not many packages, they may even ask you to leave work early!

A business office that looks very new

Cons

The interviewing manager showed up late wearing sandals. The interview was scheduled for 10:30, and we were asked to arrive 10–15 minutes early, yet they didn’t come in until 10:36. After bringing us upstairs, the meeting room was practically an oven, with no air conditioning either—but fine, let’s set that aside. You asked why I left my previous company, but then twisted my answer to make it sound like I was complaining about my former employer? It was so stuffy in there, and apparently drinking some water or having a throat lozenge made a bad impression? WOW, I thought I was here for a job interview—turns out it was fucking a beauty pageant~

【Opposed the Cross-Strait Service Trade Agreement back then, rejecting Shopee today | Evening Event】🍤🍤🐙🐙

#WitnessItTogether

#LittleShrimpBecomesBigOctopus

Shopee officially entered Taiwan in 2015. With strong financial backing from Tencent, which held nearly 40% of its shares at the time, it rapidly seized Taiwan’s e-commerce market by offering incentives such as subsidized shipping fees and waivers of listing and transaction fees. Starting with “Shopee Auctions,” which originally only operated a C2C business, and combining it with “Shopee Mall,” which operates a B2B2C business, it eventually became today’s “Shopee Shopping.”

After several years of expansion, Shopee has now become Taiwan’s largest e-commerce platform. It has also become a giant corporation capable of controlling which products are listed or removed, controlling internet traffic, and managing payment and logistics flows—like an #eightarmedOctopus extending its tentacles deep into the everyday necessities of people in Taiwan.

🔥Shopping Festivals (major and minor festivals; food, clothing, housing, transportation)

🔥Shopee Mall (product listings and removals)

🔥ShopeePay (corporate payment flows)

🔥Shopee Wallet (personal accounts)

🔥Shopee Later (consumer loans)

🔥Shopee Store-to-Store (streets and alleys)

🔥Shopee Food (from the island to your doorstep)

The Alliance for Economic Democracy will hold the “Opposed the Cross-Strait Service Trade Agreement back then, rejecting Shopee today” evening event on the eighth anniversary of the March 18 Movement. The event will feature short speeches and the announcement of the harms caused by Shopee. Everyone is invited to attend, participate, and share the event, so that together we can once again bravely say no to China’s influence.

The work environment is comfortable, the managers are kind, and the colleagues are nice as well. The whole team is young and lively; rather than feeling like going to work, it feels more like returning to the sense of camaraderie you had in university.

Cons

The workload occasionally increases suddenly, but it is still manageable.

HR arranged an interview time through a job search website.

Cons

When the scheduled phone interview time arrived, they did not call. After waiting about 10 minutes, I called HR, but the line was busy.

After waiting another 10 to 15 minutes, I noticed that HR had viewed my résumé on the job search website again. I sent HR a message through the website saying that I had not received the interview call and that my call to HR had also resulted in a busy signal. I suggested that perhaps HR or the manager had something come up unexpectedly, and asked what other interview times were available.

HR then read the message and did not respond. ^_^

Pros

1. HR was logical, asking simple, clear, and straightforward questions.

2. The first interview was with the department manager, who explained the job responsibilities in detail and was happy to answer questions. It felt more like an exchange than an interview.

3. The second interview was with a manager from Singapore and was conducted entirely in English, so it was somewhat more challenging. It lasted half an hour, and once everything that needed to be asked had been covered, it ended.

I ultimately received an offer and plan to start.

Cons

1. Songshan Cultural and Creative Park is a relatively long walk from the MRT station.

Pros

The interview and dispatch process was very professional. The entire interview was conducted online, and responses were quick and efficient.

Cons

Cons

1. There are only 2 internship sessions, while senior employees have 3. The training depends entirely on whether the veteran employee assigned to train you has patience. If you encounter someone who cannot teach or you do not get along with, you are simply unlucky. During my first internship, I encountered a very impatient veteran employee and understood practically nothing. Fortunately, the second time I finally got someone who was better at expressing themselves. The fact that they keep cutting the number of internship sessions shows how stingy they are.

2. At the beginning, the classes made it sound nice, saying that dispatched workers with good performance would become permanent employees. But this is something you should just listen to and forget. After all, none of us entered the workforce yesterday. Dispatch workers are disposable labor—just temporary workers who can be asked to leave at any time.

3. There are a lot of packages at the stores, and during promotions it is simply explosive. The packages are dirty enough as it is, and some of the clothing is practically black. Some sellers' packages arrive soaked from the rain, but store employees are afraid of customer complaints and will not refuse them.

4. The most disgusting thing is the uniform. They currently have orange short-sleeved shirts, which means the employees will freeze in winter. The uniforms have to be kept in the store and worn in rotation. If you want to take one home to wash it, you have to report it to the district manager. You only receive a uniform after completing 3 months—extremely stingy. My dad runs a food factory; anyone who comes to work gets a free uniform, and after one month they receive a second one to keep and wash themselves. Shopee's policy on uniforms is truly disgusting, so be mentally prepared for summer.

5. I shop there myself too, but it is normal to occasionally be unable to find a package. When the number of parcels explodes, even the route customers take when entering the store becomes a challenge. In this situation, if a package cannot be found, the usual procedure is to ask the customer to leave their phone number and notify them later. The district manager considers this the fault of the employee on duty at the time (sometimes the package was simply put in the wrong place by the employee who stocked it). If there is a customer complaint, it is your fault~~~ As a store employee, you have to be prepared for complaints.

6. From the moment you start working with a dispatch company, you know this job cannot last long. The number of packages is explosively high, and the workload is far heavier than at a convenience store. Shopee's store-to-store service has taken on the most exhausting duties of convenience stores: operating under the name of a retail store while actually doing logistics work. I would rather be a delivery driver. There is also piece-rate pay.

7. If there is extra money in the register, you have to hand it over to the district manager. If money is missing, the district manager requires the employee on duty to pay for it. When the district manager schedules staffing, the goal is to cut costs as much as possible!! Staff is reduced to the bare minimum; if one person can watch the store, they try to schedule only one person. Working hours are extremely exhausting. Convenience stores in busy areas also usually have only one overnight employee, and store-to-store locations likewise try to schedule just one person.

8. Turnover is very high. Even during just 2 internship sessions, I heard customers ask, “What happened to that person? Why don't they work here anymore?” The veteran employee would answer, “It was too tiring, so they quit.” There is no career development. Convenience stores at least use an employment system and offer promotions. A full-time position at Shopee's store-to-store service pays NT$28,000 and has no future; everything else depends on overtime pay. You would be better off doing office work. In the greater Taipei area, a normal company pays at least NT$30,000. If you are a part-time worker who really needs money, do not take this kind of job, because scheduling two or more people only happens on major days such as Double 11 and Double 12. Part-time workers are also worked to the bone.

9. If the store-to-store locations in the area where you would work have not yet opened many branches, it is best not to go. All the shipments will be concentrated there, making them very difficult to find. If there are too many customer complaints, employees can be dismissed this way, without receiving a single dollar in severance pay, because they are dispatched workers.

Shopee store-to-store store clerk

Recruited through a staffing agency, notified quickly; the entire process, including the interview, was conducted online, followed directly by training and an internship

Cons

1. There are only two internship sessions; there used to be three. The quality of training depends entirely on whether the experienced employee assigned to train you has patience. If you encounter someone who cannot teach well or with whom you do not get along, you are simply out of luck. During my first internship, I encountered a very impatient experienced employee, and I basically heard the words without understanding anything.

2. To put it nicely, they say that dispatched workers with good performance will be offered permanent positions, but you should take that claim with a grain of salt. After all, this is disposable labor—just temporary agency workers—and they can ask you to leave at any time.

3. There are a lot of packages at the stores, and during promotions it is an absolute disaster. On top of that, the packages are very dirty. Some sellers’ shipments even arrive soaked from the rain, but store clerks are afraid of receiving complaints and will not refuse them.

4. I also shop there myself, but it is normal to occasionally be unable to find a package. When the volume is overwhelming, simply walking into the store is a challenge. In this situation, when a package cannot be found, we usually ask the customer to leave their phone number and notify them later. The district manager considers this the clerk’s fault, and if a complaint is filed, it is treated as the clerk’s fault~~~

5. From the moment you start working with the staffing agency, you know this job will not last long. The workload is far heavier than at a convenience store. Shopee store-to-store takes on the most exhausting duties of convenience stores, operating under the name of a retail store while actually doing logistics work. If there is extra money, you have to hand it over to the district manager; if there is a shortage, you have to cover it out of your own pocket while on duty. The district manager’s staffing arrangements are all about aggressively cutting costs!! They want to reduce staffing to the bare minimum, so working hours are unbearably intense. No wonder so many people would rather do delivery work.

The interview result was never communicated. When I called to ask about the outcome, the HR representative responded rudely: “Sir, is there some problem?” That made me realize the company has no professionalism at all. The HR representative was really awful! I never expected to encounter such a terrible situation in an interview. When I asked what was wrong with the submitted proposal, they couldn’t explain it at all—it seems they just wanted to take advantage of applicants’ proposals!

- The office is very new

- For Taiwan, the benefits are considered quite generous

Cons

Terrible beyond words,

- Your work experience and workload depend entirely on which manager you end up working under. I’ve heard of people encountering terrible managers who bullied them from their very first day on the job. I’ve also heard of many managers treating employees as disposable—after all, there’s no shortage of graduates; once someone is no longer useful, they simply replace them with the next person.

- The salary isn’t as high as you might imagine. The people who joined three or four years ago are the ones who got the best deal. Now, all the positions are blocked, and there is constant infighting within and between departments. The reason for the major reorganization every six months is apparently not primarily business expansion, but that after the infighting, someone leaves again. I advise everyone to think carefully.

Dcard is flooded with negative reviews of the HR department at a certain seafood e-commerce company—like everyone has been traumatized by them 😅😅😅

I won’t go into their past incidents.

https://www.dcard.tw/f/job/p/236598476

For example, this post:

Today I happened to see that the HR team at the shrimp 🦐 company was being mischievous again.

They’re really both clueless and mischievous, haha 😄

Does the HR department at this orange-colored e-commerce company not screen candidates at all? 😅🤭

Their English is excellent. ☺️

They don’t even proofread before posting.

They do things very sloppily 🙃

Should this seafood e-commerce company be providing employees with eye exams or basic English courses now? 🤣😂

Everyone, hurry up and apply for “merketing”

to help HR meet its performance targets.

Addendum: The last sentence in HR’s English was: “if you have interested about the position” 😂🤣

Their highly “creative” English exposed their own level.

How embarrassing.

Repeat after me:

if you have interested about the position 😜

if you have interested about the position 🤪

if you have interested about the position 🤨

Anyone with clear eyes can see that this company’s standards are only at that level.

The rumors of complete internal chaos really weren’t made up.

With HR of this caliber, it naturally can’t compare with truly century-old European and American multinational corporations.

That’s what the “talent” at Southeast Asian, Chinese-funded startup e-commerce companies is like.

Pros

The entire video interview had a tense atmosphere, and I couldn’t sense any particularly noteworthy advantages. If I had to mention one, it might be that working from home during the pandemic was relatively relaxing.

Cons

Interview situation:

There were three interviewers. I assumed one was a manager, probably born in the 1970s, and the other two were likely colleagues, probably born in the 1970s or 1980s. At the beginning of the interview, there were two colleagues: one asked theoretical and brainstorming-related questions, while the other maintained a serious expression throughout. The sense of pressure was quite strong, and this person did not ask many questions. The third person, who later joined the meeting, was probably a manager. They repeated some of the same questions asked earlier and later had a brief conversation with me in English. I was not really able to answer fluently. They subsequently asked about my expected compensation and the reason I had left my previous job. After I gave my expected compensation, the interviewer smiled. They may have felt that there was a gap between my skills and abilities and their assessment. In any case, since I was still employed, not being hired was not a major issue for me. In answering the questions, I simply responded based on my own practical experience.

Overall interview impressions:

1. The company requires a certain level of spoken-language communication and listening ability.

2. For this position, theoretical knowledge may be valued more highly than practical experience. However, the required level of practical skills may also be quite high.

3. The company seems to have the feel of a Singaporean company with a Taiwanese core—essentially, it expects strong technical ability but offers compensation at a fresh graduate’s level.

Thoughts:

Since I did not join the company, I am only sharing my interview experience. I feel that Shopee may be more suitable for fresh graduates to join and develop their skills. As for whether the internal environment is good, only the employees there would know, so I will not comment further.

Responsible for creating records and keeping documentation

I interviewed for a Shopee internship a while ago. After spending some time preparing, I finally received notice of the internship two weeks after the interview. It was around mid-October at the time. I had also applied for internships at three other companies, but because I received Shopee’s offer early, I declined the others first.

I originally expected to onboard at the end of October and had already arranged my courses and semester plans. Between receiving the interview result and starting work, HR even called me twice to confirm the internship details, but I never received an official letter, which felt strange (a large company should send an email, in theory). So I emailed HR to ask before starting work, but HR never responded. It was not until I called that afternoon that I finally got through.

HR: Sorry, the department “temporarily” decided to convert the position into a full-time role, so there’s no internship anymore. Goodbye.

Me: ................................................................................................................?

Did I hear that wrong, or is this operation so bizarre that it goes beyond my understanding? I can understand internal personnel changes, but what does it mean to withdraw an offer one day before the start date? At the very least, couldn’t they have clarified a few things first?

1. If there were internal personnel changes, shouldn’t they have posted the position so early?

2. If they discovered internal personnel changes while interviewing so many applicants, wouldn’t it have been enough to reject all the applicants?

3. After interviewing and sending an offer, was it really appropriate to notify the applicant of the cancellation “the day before” onboarding and dismiss them with one simple phone call?

Do they realize that my semester plans were completely disrupted by this? I didn’t even receive a formal apology. I’ve never heard of any company operating this way. Spend a little more money and effort resolving internal personnel issues properly—no wonder the turnover rate is so high. And every student who has interned or worked full-time there says it’s a terrible place to work!!!

A former Shopee intern passing by.

Shopee basically treats interns as disposable labor.

Shopee signs three-month contracts with interns.

It is possible to stay on for more than three months,

but they simply will not sign another contract.

After Double 11 ended,

there was a period when things were fairly quiet.

Then Shopee unexpectedly began laying off interns in large numbers.

At that time, my supervisor called me in for a meeting.

The supervisor said that the department had not been busy recently,

and that they would ask other departments whether they needed interns.

They asked whether I would be willing to intern in another department,

and I agreed.

Then, at the beginning of a certain month,

my supervisor messaged me saying they wanted to talk to me.

But afterward, they kept saying they were busy, had meetings, and so on,

and asked whether we could change the time.

They stood me up for three weeks, all the way until Tuesday at the end of the month.

Finally, we spoke face-to-face.

The supervisor said, “I asked the other departments. They don’t need interns. Since we don’t need anyone here either, your last day will be this Friday, okay? Thank you~”

I was extremely upset when I heard that.

Being stood up repeatedly for the earlier meetings was bad enough,

but they waited until now to tell me something so important.

Later, I called the Labor Bureau to ask.

They said that although I had completed three months and had not signed a renewal contract with the company,

the fact that they let me continue working meant that they had effectively agreed to renew the contract.

Therefore, if they suddenly terminated me, I could receive severance pay and wages in lieu of notice.

I immediately told HR that I had already consulted the Labor Bureau,

and that they said I could receive severance pay and wages in lieu of notice.

HR immediately messaged my supervisor to confirm the matter.

Because my supervisor sat very close to me,

I heard the supervisor say, “Huh~ Does an intern’s contract become invalid after three months, meaning we can dismiss them at will?”

I rolled my eyes when I heard that.

Fortunately, I still received severance pay and wages in lieu of notice.

Responsible for copying and pasting, creating records, and keeping logs.

A while ago, a widely discussed article about an internship at 蝦x sparked heated debate. It also made me want to share the problems I saw at this company. Since so many of my friends work here, this post brings together the absurd things my friends and I have encountered.

Of course, not everyone who has encountered these things is this bizarre, but they are not isolated cases either.

I’ll start with the company’s own problems.

1. No systems; everything is manual

This is probably one of 蝦x’s most well-known characteristics: everything requires opening a Google Form.

No matter which department it is, everyone is constantly creating forms, filling out forms, or finding people to fill out forms.

That’s why the company hired a bunch of part-time workers to enter or check data. Former colleagues joked that “蝦x is held up by its part-time workers,” and that really isn’t an exaggeration!

Also, because there is no integrated system at all, if a piece of information needs to be changed, it has to be updated in every form containing that information. First, this is extremely time-consuming and ridiculous. Then, sometimes people forget exactly where that information appeared, so there are often situations where “people look at different forms and end up with different understandings.”

In the end, everyone spends a huge amount of time communicating and apologizing. This really is a baffling company.

2. The office is brightly lit at night, with no overtime pay

This is probably also quite well known: 蝦x is notorious as a sweatshop.

At first, I thought it wouldn’t be a regular occurrence or that people wouldn’t work too late. I was completely wrong.

From what I’ve heard, in some departments, the earliest people leave at 9 p.m., and for some, leaving at 10 p.m. is the norm. I’ve even heard of new hires working until 1 a.m.??

The company is so wealthy—can’t it hire more people? Working until 1 a.m. without overtime pay is honestly laughable.

3. Major problems with interdepartmental communication; wasting your life communicating

This is somewhat related to the lack of systems mentioned in the first point, but that concerned data.

Here, I’m referring to the company’s lack of horizontal communication. Departments have no idea what the others are doing, resulting in a lot of duplicated work and wasted resources spent doing the same things.

In addition to duplicated work, another baffling situation is that sometimes when you ask another department to do something, they wonder why you are inexplicably making them deal with it.

It is incredibly frustrating. It would not be an exaggeration to say that you may have to explain the same thing more than a dozen times 🤗

4. Departmental infighting

At this company, Commercial and Marketing do not get along. I find this really childish.

But I’ve heard that some people ask where you are from before deciding whether to help you or make things difficult for you. Hmm… the so-called Singaporean multinational is actually extremely Taiwanese at heart.

5. The senior management is poached with high salaries, while the lower levels are full of…?

Everyone in the industry probably knows that 蝦x poaches many management consultants. That itself is not a problem. The problem is: what is the point of hiring so many highly capable people if the people underneath them don’t have a clear understanding of things?

At this company, someone who has been there for around two years is considered relatively senior. Such people often serve as junior leads, but that is where the problem originates.

Two or three years ago, getting into 蝦x was not as competitive, so anyone with a general understanding would know that quite a few people had weak foundations. But now that the company has recruited many more capable people, how could these newcomers possibly respect or follow them?

Of course, you can’t tar everyone with the same brush. Not every relatively senior employee has a weak background, but many of the people I’ve seen and heard about do.

Now let’s discuss the problems with the work and the colleagues themselves.

1. On call all year round, with no time off

The people at this company are strange. Even when your status says you’re on leave, someone will still message you (regardless of the department). Do they understand what respect means?

It’s bad enough during leave, but supervisors will also keep sending messages over the weekend. If you don’t reply, they keep sending more. I’ve even heard of a friend whose supervisor directly called on a weekend evening to ask whether they could help, and then wanted them to ask people from other departments for help too??

Basically, I think everyone at this company is extremely submissive. It’s rare to see anyone here with work-life balance. If there is one department that does, it is probably the data-related department.

2. Highly segmented work, with lots of miscellaneous tasks

Because the company is so large, everyone is like an assembly-line worker, doing very trivial tasks (such as filling out the forms mentioned above). I genuinely don’t understand the point of hiring so many highly educated people (蝦x particularly likes recruiting graduates from National Taiwan University and National Chengchi University) to fill out forms.

And because the company is so chaotic, completing one task may take twice as long as it would at another company. The process may also involve a lot of arguments and apologies. In the end, you really don’t know why you are wasting your life in a place like this.

3. Disrespecting and bullying employees

This point may be somewhat subjective, but it is something my friends and I unanimously agree on.

It may also be related to the backgrounds of the employees mentioned earlier. In any case, the colleagues you encounter here can give you the feeling of, “Huh, you work here too?”

Because the company has so many different kinds of people, it is definitely not an elitist place. Of course, 蝦x may not need elites.

I’ve also heard friends share some outrageous experiences with supervisors. Here are two of them.

One supervisor would drive wedges between team members, badmouthing them to each other and deliberately trying to create division. Apparently, ten people under that supervisor had left in less than a year. Many people reported the issue, and senior management and HR knew about it, but the problem was never resolved. That supervisor is still enjoying life at 蝦x.

Even more outrageous, one supervisor directly humiliated a team member and said they were unworthy of the position. I really feel that people at this company have no respect at all. What is there to be so arrogant about just because you are a supervisor at 蝦x?

There was also a case where a colleague’s supervisor kept dumping work on them while the other team members enjoyed an easy ride.

Because the other team members were closer to the supervisor, the supervisor kept assigning work to that colleague and would not help even when the colleague complained about having too much work. Shortly before the colleague resigned, the supervisor assigned them yet another report. In the end, my friend had to ask someone else for help. How far do you have to go to bully someone?

4. Tricking young people

I’ve noticed that many people join because they think 蝦x has amazing benefits and is full of young people. In reality, the former is untrue, and the latter is a problem.

Many people assume that 蝦x pays very well, but the company actually has no fixed year-end bonus. Naturally, the monthly salary is inflated to compensate; this is just simple mathematics.

I also originally thought that many young people would be easier to communicate with, but they turned out to be the root of the problem. Young supervisors lack leadership experience and often lack work experience as well, creating chaos.

For example, some do not even know how to manage basic meeting schedules or their team members’ workloads. One colleague had a meeting that lasted 12 hours, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., with no output at all. Apparently, the person in charge did not notice anything wrong.

5. A fake multinational with a truly Taiwanese mindset

The many points above should make it obvious that this is an extremely Taiwanese company. Anyone who has worked for a genuine European or American company would probably find this place unbelievably absurd.

But perhaps many people still take pride in working for a multinational company, not realizing that this is simply a sweatshop trying to squeeze every last bit out of you. With so many young people, and new hires coming in every day, there is no fear of running out of recruits ^_^

Finally, this company is truly toxic!

I’ve seen everyone who joins eventually lose their dreams, forget what they want and what they like, and stop caring about anything. It is genuinely frightening!

I’m not exaggerating. So many people eventually become cold, robotic machines, forgetting who they are. How many young people’s dreams has 蝦x ultimately extinguished?

This company is very good at cultivating a cheerful image, but once you go inside and look around, many people are under tremendous pressure and cannot smile.

If you still think after reading this that these are just isolated cases experienced by certain people, that’s fine—good luck to you. In any case, I hope this can help some students who were close to taking the wrong path.

Apparently, people resign every day after the Lunar New Year, while batches of new hires are sent in every week! May all benefactors enjoy a lifetime of peace.

(The above is all something I dreamed about. Nothing to see here, okay?)

The company has floor-to-ceiling windows

Cons

I applied for position A but was invited to interview for position B

HR did not inform me at all, and the notification email also described position A

The department manager even asked me, “Didn’t HR tell you?”

No, they really didn’t. I don’t know why they would waste both our time like this.

The office is very luxurious

The manager is quite kind

Cons

I just wanted to share some interview experience with the information technology department.

Before the interview, I had already filled out a questionnaire. On the day of the first interview, I also had to complete another test. The test was somewhat long, and writing it was a bit tiring.

There were two interviewers at the first interview. After we had talked for a while, another person, who I believe was a junior manager, came in to continue the interview. The interview that day lasted more than an hour and a half, and the test also took quite a long time. Definitely don't schedule an interview with another company on the same day, or you may be late.

During this interview, I mentioned that I don't like working overtime. I couldn't tell what the manager's attitude was; they only somewhat reservedly said that employees would not be kept once their work was finished. Of course, they also appreciated colleagues who voluntarily stayed to learn more or improve their work output.

My impression of the first interview was not bad. The manager and HR reminded me that the next interview would be with a manager from Singapore, so I should practice introducing myself in English.

I later received a notice for a second interview, but the actual interviewers were still two Taiwanese managers, so I don't know what was going on.

For the first half hour, we spoke entirely in Chinese, then they suddenly asked me to introduce myself in English again. I had already somewhat forgotten the self-introduction I had memorized beforehand XD

Before leaving, I asked whether I would receive a notification regardless of whether I was accepted or moved on to the next stage. They said yes, but I ended up receiving no response.

There was a cup of water…

The HR person was pretty nice……though all they did was lead me into the meeting room…

Cons

First, there was a computer-based test. The laptop provided by the other party froze every five minutes, and even opening software took a long time. The equipment experience was unbelievably poor.

After looking over the questions, the supervisor asked whether I could identify anything that needed review. After I mentioned some areas for improvement, they immediately said, “Do you think this is already 100 points for you???

(I didn’t… How could it possibly be perfect…… There are bound to be bugs…)

Also, when the interview touched on my career outlook, I felt that my explanation was clear and easy to understand, but the other person responded in a disdainful, contemptuous tone: “What do you mean by this??? I don’t understand.”

They also asked why I had left my previous company. Even after I explained the reason, they kept going in circles and asking why. It felt like we were talking in different dimensions :)

During the Q&A, I asked about matters within Shopee. The background and details aren’t important, and writing it all out would be too long, so I’ll omit them. The conversation had originally been fairly harmonious (apart from her poor communication style earlier; I kept desperately ignoring her tone ^_^).

Then she suddenly changed her attitude and said, “So do you actually want to or not???” while glaring at me. (How would I know whether I want to or not? Weren’t you supposed to explain the company’s internal situation?)

Overall, the attitude during the interview made me feel extremely disrespected. I also felt that the supervisor was difficult to communicate with. I genuinely don’t understand.

I interviewed in June or July, so I don’t know whether there is a high turnover rate among Shopee’s supervisors. I hope everyone avoids meeting this supervisor.

The HR representative was friendly and approachable, with a very good attitude.

The written test was of reasonable difficulty.

Cons

The interviewer kept emphasizing that if I wanted to change jobs for a higher salary, I should choose something like the gaming industry.

There was no guarantee that Shopee could offer better salary conditions.

They then said they could not understand why I wanted to change jobs.

Do I really have to be mistreated at my current company before I can choose to change jobs?

The résumé had already clearly stated the length of my previous work experience, yet it was only at the interview stage that the interviewer criticized me for these things.

As for the tools I am proficient in, I did not specifically list the ones I am not proficient in on my résumé.

In all fairness, the interviewer brought too much emotion into the interview process.

If you want to waste your time, you can go have a chat with them.

Before my Shopee interview, I discovered that there were many negative interview reviews. Still, I approached my interview with mixed feelings.

The position I interviewed for was “Graphic Design Specialist.”

At the beginning, I was given a 10-minute Photoshop test to create a banner.

Then I introduced myself and was asked why I had left my previous company.

(The above were all perfectly normal.)

Next, the young female manager’s questioning process really gave me the impression that she was extremely disdainful and looked down on me, both in her attitude and facial expression (she even smirked crookedly)… Then she kept questioning every answer I gave!

🦐: We have a large volume of banners here and often have to work overtime. What level do you think you could achieve in ten minutes?

Me: I probably wouldn’t be able to make it extremely refined.

🦐: That’s a problem with your own abilities!

She also didn’t give me any time to introduce my own work.

My first interview experience was absolutely terrible! She spoke very rudely and kept pressuring me… I felt extremely disrespected.

Unlimited snacks, the building is very new—that’s about it.

Cons

If you’re thinking about joining Shopee customer service, I really urge you to think twice.

There’s a reason Tianyancha’s reviews are overwhelmingly negative.

After you first join, you’ll spend the entire first month taking classes, where they teach you all the information.

After that, you’re sent straight to the phones to take calls.

But because they’re understaffed,

one trainer has to coach several new hires at the same time,

so the trainers can easily become impatient. Then you won’t dare ask questions anymore.

Also, because there are too many emails, phone-support staff have to help reply to emails.

Your replies have to follow their required format and wording exactly.

As soon as you start taking calls, there’s no such thing as an adjustment period.

The pace is terrifyingly fast, and the amount of information is overwhelming too.

You’re under extremely high pressure all day~

They all think that since it was covered in class, you should know it,

but they don’t realize that the classes never go into that much detail.

Overall, it’s an absurd company. The reason the compensation is raised so high

is that no one would want to stay otherwise.

Not to mention that when you receive a customer complaint call, even if the other person verbally attacks you, as long as they have a clear request, you’re not allowed to hang up on them.

If you’re the masochistic type, welcome to this company.

I think many people would be discouraged after reading the reviews here, but based on my recent interview experience, many things may have improved, and it wasn't as bad as previously described.

1. The environment was comfortable. It was previously mentioned that interviewees were not provided with a cup of water, but cups were provided when I went.

2. Both the HR phone interview and the interview with the manager were very friendly. Afterwards, they even thanked me for coming to the interview, which made me feel respected.

3. The manager came in a little late for the interview, but it was less than 15 minutes.

4. I received an offer, and the compensation was not low.

Overall, it was a very comfortable interview experience. Of course, interviews are not always accurate, and you only really know after joining the company. At least based on my personal experience so far, my impression has been very good.

Cons

I can't think of anything for now—I'm serious!

Good work environment

Cons

The interview took two hours. During the first hour, I had to take tests on English, Chinese, logic, and so on, but after I finished, they said the results were only for reference! The manager’s interview consisted mostly of questions about things already stated on my résumé or other unimportant matters. In some cases, the questions were poorly phrased, and the interviewer even made strange facial expressions while I was answering, which left me speechless! After more than two hours, there was still no meaningful outcome—I just felt that it was a huge waste of time! Also, everyone attending the interview was dressed very formally. It looked like a large company that places great emphasis on SOPs, and it did not feel as youthful as people might think from what they see.

Pros

- The company is new and spacious, and the atmosphere seems nice

- Building management is very strict: you can only exchange your ID for a visitor pass and go upstairs ten minutes before the interview. If you happen to arrive early, there is an Eslite bookstore where you can enjoy the air conditioning

- The interview atmosphere was fairly relaxed, with both sides gaining a certain understanding of each other through questions and answers

Cons

- The interview was delayed by about forty minutes. While waiting, no one offered a cup of water or said they were sorry, which felt disrespectful to the interviewee

- After the interview, no one explained how long I would need to wait for a notification or provided any closing remarks; it simply ended. I guess I was not outstanding enough and received a silent rejection

I interviewed for the Design Assistant position, but I felt that the Design Manager... to be honest... the way she spoke and the impression she gave off were not very good~ I hope she stays at Shopee for the rest of her life~ Otherwise, I don’t think anyone outside would appreciate her “talent”!

The entire interview process was really quite rough~ I still hope the other party can further improve their interview communication and professionalism, rather than making people feel that it was very low-quality~~~~~~~

Applied for a designer position in the Design Department.

Sharing my interview experience.

1. Filled out forms and answered questions

2. Completed a practical test: removed the background from an image and created a banner

3. Interviewed by two team leaders, a senior manager, and an HR representative

4. They really like asking about zodiac signs and seem somewhat prone to stereotyping people based on them

5. They really like probing into the internal culture of previous companies, focusing on whether people feel they can get along. The team leader appeared to be born in 1990.

The key points and conclusion:

1. There is no limit on the number of work orders; it is entirely a responsibility-based system (so does that mean you take on however many come in?)

No wonder people outside the company say you absolutely should not go there and ruin your health working overtime.

2. Overtime is considered normal if your abilities are inadequate, but I heard that someone had done 100 background removals in one day, someone had worked until early morning, and someone could occasionally leave at 7–8 p.m. Leaving at 8:30 p.m. does not count as overtime. There are various conflicting claims and unanswered questions.

3. It feels like there is only a team-leader system and no assistant system. Everything from small tasks to major campaign pages has to be taken on.

4. You have to go to the office to work even on holidays when there is a major campaign.

5. To accommodate the platform’s schedule, you should avoid taking leave before a major campaign whenever possible.

6. I’ve vaguely heard that even if you take annual leave, work orders may still be assigned, and you have to find time to take them home or work overtime at the office.

7. There is no overtime pay and no subsidy—it is simply a responsibility-based system.

8. HR said the year-end bonus is 0–3 months’ salary, with no fixed amount. In other words, receiving 0 is also considered normal. Performance evaluations completely depend on how much the supervisor feels like giving.

There does not seem to be any clear basis; they just kept saying it depends on performance. The explanation was very vague.

—

The following is also information I heard:

If you are unwilling to work overtime, there is no need to spend time interviewing, and you will not be hired! There is a serious seniority-based culture.

This interview felt like a dream.

Absolutely insane!

None at all. So many accounts of experience have already been written here, yet a bunch of young, clueless kids keep asking how to get in—is something wrong with your eyes?

Cons

The interview experience was extremely poor. Are Shopee’s HR staff overly self-important? They’re just HR, yet they put on such airs and refuse to give people a chance to interview no matter what. I learned through a headhunter that if you have less than one year of experience in any one job, you basically have no chance of getting in. Furthermore, because the company has suffered serious losses, it is starting to downsize and cut staff this year. Basically, it is unlikely to be hiring newcomers, and the salary will not be as good as before, unless you have a very strong “manager connection” to get you in.

I was referred for an interview by a friend who works there. Two department managers came to the first interview. HR indicated that a manager from another department could also come to learn about me and asked me to consider two positions. In the end, however, only the manager of the position I applied for seriously spoke with me. The other manager was either yawning or playing on their phone, showing complete disrespect for the candidate. I was then asked to go for a second interview. I found this strange—if I was a good fit, why was a second interview necessary? I thought HR wanted to talk with me, but at the second interview they actually brought in a “specialist” from their department to interview me. Why would they send a “specialist” rather than a manager to interview a job candidate...? This was truly extremely disrespectful to the interviewee. The questions had little depth, and they even asked questions about their own work. It was obvious they just wanted me to help answer their questions and then intended to kick me out. In the end, sure enough, HR notified me that I had not been selected. The whole interview was a joke! They showed no respect for people at all. If they are disrespectful from the interview onward, presumably they will not respect their employees either. Inexperienced young people act self-important from above. A company like this should hurry up and go bankrupt—it makes me want to vomit just looking at it.

Cons

I have absolutely no idea how senior management makes decisions; they don't even understand basic waste-cost calculations.

They have the nerve to act but never take responsibility. Every time they issue some stupid order, they make subordinates clean up the mess, and they are always threatening to fire people to force them to resign.

A certain warehouse manager is so stupid that they completely fail to understand the situation yet think they can hold everything together. They are also stingy and miserly, nitpicking even over the distribution of consumable supplies.

There are more snacks and drinks than anyone can finish

Cons

After being at the company for some time, I was fortunate enough to get to know senior and junior colleagues from various departments and those who joined Shopee at different times.

Other sections have said more or less what the work situation is like.

What I want to talk about is the various strange things I’ve been dreaming about lately:

1. The company has over a thousand employees, yet the salary gap is enormous. For example, employees with early employee numbers may start at under 30K; after finally breaking through 30K following a raise, they discover that juniors in the same position may inexplicably earn 10K—or even more—than they do. All I can say is: the early bird gets the worm, while employees who arrive early get buried in dirt faster~

2. No matter the department, the company has no performance bonuses. Early employees who fought their way through difficult times to get where they are now work diligently for low salaries, while later employees negotiated sky-high base salaries and can take it easy. Yet everyone has to shoulder the same targets that are perpetually set in the heavens—seemingly miraculous targets—and the same pressure~ If you do well, it’s simply what you’re supposed to do, with no reward; if you don’t, congratulations—you get attention from all sides. Everyone is expected to have the ability to witness miracles just like Liu Chien—magic~

3. There are often all kinds of last-minute additions and urgent tasks, while information is frequently not circulated promptly enough. At every stage, someone is working overtime to accommodate the additions or breaking down while cleaning up the mess, but don’t expect to receive any bonuses or overtime pay.

4. I’ve heard that for senior and junior colleagues in the same position, with roughly the same responsibilities and experience, a salary difference of over 20K is completely normal. People with little experience can simply make a brief stop at another well-known company and negotiate a very attractive figure, while those earning more aren’t necessarily more capable or have a better attitude toward work.

5. The staffing structure is bizarre. Each team carries different amounts of revenue and workload, but they all have the same number of people. It’s inevitable that some long-time employees can sit around comfortably as redundant staff, carrying little workload or small performance targets, forever failing to understand the situation while still collecting a high salary.

6. I’ve heard that some managers are merely figureheads with little ability. They do nothing but talk and dump everything on their team members. A casual inquiry in the industry turns up plenty of negative reviews, yet they still receive astonishing annual salaries. The departments under them haven’t become any more capable because these people took over; instead, they spend all day making team members clean up the messes while continuing to enjoy their own lucky, carefree workdays. (Apparently, managing upward and cultivating one’s own image are what matter most.)

7. HR is not very professional. It feels as though salaries aren’t determined according to rank and duties. (The company says it has a standard system, but you should really just take that with a grain of salt, because your newly hired subordinate may earn more than you, and an assistant may earn more than a specialist~)

All of the above are merely recent dreams. Any resemblance is purely coincidental. Wishing everyone peace, safety, and happiness.

Remember to have a cup of honey lemon every day~

Pros

1. Snack cabinet, drinks, popsicles, instant noodles, etc.

2. Food is provided on Orange Day every month.

3. Occasional activities for employees to participate in.

*Honestly, the employee benefits are really good—mostly food.*

Cons

1. The company lacks a complete organizational structure, so no one really knows who holds which position. Even when a position exists, it is unclear what the responsibilities are. It is simply very chaotic. Even now, I do not know what my supervisor’s position actually is.

2. There are too many employees, and their capabilities vary enormously. Some tasks that could be handled by one person end up being done by a group of people in certain departments, with everyone doing the same thing. It is extremely inefficient. Some departments do not actually need that many people either, because there really are not enough tasks to distribute. So I honestly do not understand why they hire so many people.

3. The way data is compiled is as primitive as a caveman’s. There are piles of identical data that no one organizes, and new files keep being created endlessly. What is the point? When it is time to organize the data, it is always the interns who suffer. I remember that my supervisor once asked me and another colleague to organize nearly 10,000 records—records that had to be opened and checked one by one—and still expected us to submit them within an extremely short period, about two or three days! They even complained that we were progressing too slowly because it was urgent. Urgent tasks are not announced in advance either. If the people who were originally responsible for organizing the data had properly consolidated and systematized it, would this situation have happened? Besides, my colleague and I had other tasks to do as well. How could we possibly organize nearly 10,000 records in such a short time?

4. Some senior full-time employees who are “not managers” are extremely self-important in the way they treat others. Although I do not understand the real reason, my guess is that they may have been there longer, so they act like middle or high school students becoming seniors for the first time, wanting to give newcomers a sort of initiation or show of authority. For example, I once saw a male employee ask a female employee from another department to move the goods she had placed in a way that was “occupying someone else’s office space.” She dismissed him quickly with an extremely unpleasant expression and a very bad attitude.

5. I have to say that the cliques are quite obvious. You can see them in everything from people’s arrival and departure times to lunch. A single department can be divided into many small groups. I do not know whether these groups attack one another, but although cliques exist everywhere, they are particularly serious here. If you are not already familiar with people, it is difficult to interact with anyone in the department, let alone if you are new. After joining, I only ate lunch with people from my department once; afterward, no one took the initiative to invite me, so it was entirely up to chance. As a result, some employees end up being less familiar with people in their own department and getting along better with people from other departments. There are even people who quietly hide in a corner and eat lunch alone. Basically, the most interaction you have with people in your department is when they assign work to you.

6. All I can say is that the workload is truly enormous. There are endless Excel spreadsheets waiting for you to organize. Meanwhile, you may see other full-time colleagues chatting and seeming to have nothing to do, which makes you wonder why you are working so hard. People higher up pass tasks down to those below them, and those below pass everything on to the interns. Most interns work harder than the full-time employees—no exaggeration. During 99 or Double 11, while the full-time employees are busy taking photos, the interns are the ones doing the actual hard work.

In summary, this is a company with good benefits but absolutely no organization or efficiency. I do not know whether they will restructure the internal staff in the future, but if they do, I might consider becoming a full-time employee. Otherwise, seeing this kind of chaos before even becoming a full-time employee, I really do not have the courage to stay here. Given the way they operate and their efficiency, I wonder whether the company might eventually be brought down by them.

HR was quite polite, and the interview scheduling process was professional. They even sent a calendar invitation.

The company environment is pretty good, but there is no MRT station nearby, so transportation is somewhat inconvenient.

Cons

I have also been a veteran in e-commerce for over 15 years, and I had actually already heard many rumors about this company in the industry.

Many people get in through connections. The company offers fairly good salaries, and many employees earn an annual salary of one million or more.

But the overtime is brutal, factional conflicts are severe, the organization is chaotic, and the SOPs are unclear.....

For all these reasons, many people who were initially happy to receive an annual salary of one million or more still could not stick it out~

The female manager who interviewed me put on a very superior attitude, but her e-commerce experience was quite limited. Her questions and professional knowledge had little to do with the role. I can't imagine having someone at this level as my manager in the future—goodbye~

Unlimited snacks and drinks, fruit days, occasional activities of all sizes, lots of cute girls, and they’re willing to pay whatever salary you dare to ask for.

If you latch onto the right people, you can sleep well every day and keep your wallet nicely full.

Cons

About all that, here are the stories I collected from Shopee...

A startup company with no company policies whatsoever. When you first join, HR gives you five sheets of A4 paper: three are employment documents, and two explain how to operate, use, and set up your computer equipment. There are no organizational bylaws, no management system, and no explanations of any rules or restrictions. All the workplace rules are only briefly covered by HR on your first day (and some HR representatives do not even mention them). On the surface, it seems great! The company is so free! In reality, you cannot even tell whether your position is supposed to be that of a specialist or an assistant!

One colleague ended up in this situation: people in the same department did completely different work, and although their positions were parallel, this colleague was inexplicably treated directly as an assistant. They could not even finish their own work, yet they were forced to work overtime—and received no overtime pay—while watching the person ordering them around leave work on time to go on dates. That colleague once sought help from HR, but the HR representative said there was nothing they could do. In the end, that colleague could only leave.

Of course, HR often has to organize all kinds of activities, big and small, and I often see them working until midnight. It is genuinely hard work, and the events are meant to entertain everyone, but I still hope HR can pay more attention to the working conditions of their colleagues instead of only focusing on organizing events for the student association~

I have heard about a peculiar person who leaves work at exactly 8 p.m. every day. Even when there is nothing to do, they insist on leaving at 8. Do you think they are diligent and devoted to the company? No—they are only putting on a show for their supervisor. It is unbelievably unfair: this person has no work ability whatsoever, got into the company through connections, and spends overtime watching sports games, yet is inexplicably the supervisor’s favorite and most highly promoted employee—a team lead.

I also heard about a very capable colleague in another category. When the company was short-staffed, she took on the work for the entire category by herself, handling four product categories alone. She was hardworking and useful, and was treated completely like a slave. Later, she no longer wanted to be treated like one, so she spoke up for herself and hoped to improve her working conditions. Instead, she was treated like a bad child who was just causing trouble. In the end, she could not hold on any longer and had to use going abroad as an excuse to submit her resignation.

Now, let’s talk about the supervisors—the miracles of the e-commerce goddess. Several earlier posts have mentioned them, and there is absolutely no exaggeration, because I was once inexplicably dragged in and reprimanded too. I am really not making this up. As an aside, there used to be several extremely domineering colleagues in the goddess’s department. They could control everything and do whatever they wanted, while everyone else could only cooperate and was not allowed to have any opinions. When they wanted something, we had to provide it immediately; when we followed up on progress, they ignored us. Each one had a more arrogant attitude than the last. If something did not suit their wishes, they would complain to the goddess. Absolutely outrageous!

Next, there was an older supervisor who looked very kind, but had some very unusual ideas! According to colleagues in that department, she went around bringing in people she had worked with in the past to occupy positions. She even had her own people in departments belonging to other categories. As for why she did this—well, do not ask me. I absolutely have no idea!

However, more than 60% of the people she brought in were controversial figures in other parts of the e-commerce industry. The godsons and goddaughters she brought along received excellent treatment, and their salaries and positions were guaranteed to rise rapidly. As for everyone who was not one of her godchildren, some resigned and others struggled on.

As for the junior supervisors, many of them were genuinely far too young. They had little work ability, yet spoke in an arrogant and haughty manner. One colleague said that their junior supervisor had three student workers serving as assistants and still found that insufficient: everyone in the department was his assistant. He also refused to let the student workers help with anything else within the department; they could only work for him, and anyone else who used them would be scolded. Extremely domineering!

There are many more stories, but I cannot be bothered to tell them...

Actually, these things could happen at any company, and there may be even more outrageous examples. But Shopee is a startup company—doesn’t that, by definition, mean breaking away from traditional office culture and building a good working environment?

Now this place is practically a hodgepodge gathering place for the entire e-commerce industry. Shopee has no system or philosophy of its own; it poaches people from competitors while also bringing over their bad workplace culture and habits. On the surface, it is a startup company, but in reality, it is unbelievably bureaucratic!

Still, there are plenty of good colleagues and good supervisors. Newcomers can only rely on luck!

Shopee in the past was really great...

Pros

1. A generous 18 days of paid leave

2. An endlessly replenished snack cabinet

3. Orange Day

4. The salary is much higher than at outside companies. As long as you dare to ask, the company dares to offer it. Note that both annual- and monthly-salary arrangements are negotiated, so remember to confirm clearly with your manager or headhunter.

5. The employees are all very young and get along well. There are lots of people inviting others to activities when taking leave or after work.

6. Massages

7. The year-end party is wild; almost more than 90% of attendees dress up.

Here’s an explanation of the company organization and its main departments:

Marketing — I’m not familiar with it, but I often see some people leaving at 11 or 12.

Sales team — No bonuses.

Category Management (CM) — Hard to explain; see my introduction below.

Customer Service (CS) — Very miserable, with an extremely high turnover rate. Experienced customer-service staff are needed, but HR likes to invite inexperienced people to interviews, and many leave after working for only one or two months.

Warehouse — An independent entity that is difficult to interact with in daily work.

BI — Engineers.

Operations Department — Almost all back-office units belong here. Logistics, the disputes team, and CS are also under this department.

HR — Since Regional HR holds most of the power, Taiwan HR has little decision-making authority. Also, because Shopee does not have a general-affairs department, HR handles general affairs as well.

* Sales and CM now seem to be collectively called the Commercial Team. It actually includes many units, but I’ve forgotten them all XD

** The organization changes extremely quickly. On average, there is a new policy every month, and the company is reorganized every few months, depending on the current assignment given by the boss.

*** Finance and Legal are not listed above because Shopee shares Garena’s Finance and Legal departments with Garena.

Cons

I worked in the CM department, which, like those of other competitors, is divided into lines such as H&B, Fashion, and so on. The first thing you need to do when joining the company is learn to survive well on your own and know what you want (the company name, money, or whatever); only then might you be able to survive here. The second thing is getting used to a pile of English abbreviations. E.g., H&B = Health & Beauty, TBC = To Be Checked... When I first joined, I once heard a colleague put four English abbreviations into a single sentence. It nearly made my head spin.

Almost all of the company’s senior executives come from McKinsey, and many managers at the mid-level and above have studied abroad, so communicating in English is completely commonplace. The Taiwan CEO seems to oversee other regions as well (I’m not entirely sure about this) and comes to Taiwan once every few weeks.

The following are the most unfriendly aspects of the work, based on my experience:

1. Information does not circulate.

2. Extremely high employee turnover.

Discussing points 1 and 2 together: There were approximately 300 employees last August, compared with approximately 1,300–1,500 this August (I’m not sure how many have left). The organization is developing rapidly, but its organizational rules and procedures have not kept up. There is no organizational chart, no group mailing list, and no documented company-process SOPs. There are no documents to consult for financial reimbursement or work-order application procedures. HR says the announcements were made by email. Hello, but did you know I joined after those emails were sent?? A lot of time is spent finding the right person.

The company is so large, yet it loves using email to solve everything. People are constantly told to check their email, but HR itself has records of people being left off emails...

Besides HR, other departments also use email to announce things, which is perfectly normal. Remember how I said there was no group mailing list? So people often have to confirm one by one with the department being notified whether a new employee has joined and whether the position needs to be notified. Worse, sometimes the email is sent without asking anyone at all. I didn’t receive the notification and therefore didn’t tell the vendor about it; only afterward did they review the matter and ask why no one had notified me. (This happens extremely often. I told Logistics to notify me, and next time Marketing failed to notify me. After telling Marketing, there were still countless other departments—CS, Sales... I might as well spend my entire life dealing with this.)

The most annoying part is that because new employees are constantly joining, the notification email gets a “Reply All” from a new employee’s manager, who adds new recipients and reminds people to add those employees later. If one line’s CM replies once, that email can receive more than ten replies, all of them just adding people...

As a result, information is asymmetric in many matters. The company often announces an XX policy, but many people say they did not receive it or were not notified, so department managers still have to confirm it with everyone individually. Couldn’t they just notify everyone from the beginning?

I once asked why they didn’t create a group mailing list. HR did not give a direct answer. I only vaguely heard that the boss dislikes such groups and is afraid recipient information could be stolen from outside, so now every department has its own recipient list.

3. The same job can involve different responsibilities.

Because I was in the CM department, this mainly refers to CM. Within CM, there are Leads, people responsible for campaigns, people responsible for the marketplace, people responsible for C2C, and further divisions based on title. I’ve talked with people on my own line and on different lines, except those responsible for the marketplace, and found that everyone’s work differs to some extent. That’s when I learned that “managerial assignments” make up a large part of the job. I’ve encountered one line where people could pull reports and numbers themselves, while on another line everything was handed to BI to pull.

On the positive side, depending on what you want from your work and career development, discussing it with your manager—and, depending on their authority, seeing how far they can help you—can still yield a lot. An extreme example is ending up with a manager who treats you like an assistant and orders you around. There are quite a few managers like this at Shopee, so be careful. (Some managers seem to have communication issues; the first thing out of their mouths is apparently to curse people XD)

4. Interpersonal relationships are very important.

5. There are no public promotion channels or standards.

Discussing points 4 and 5 together: Interpersonal relationships are important everywhere, but here they are directly and highly related to transfers between departments and promotions. In the past, your career development at the company was determined by your manager’s impression of you—whether they liked you or not. Internal openings were not publicly posted; the manager of the new opening would privately look for someone. This also made other people who wanted to transfer dissatisfied, wondering why the opening or recruitment criteria were not made public so everyone could apply. So having the right manager is very important!

Most of the company’s managers are parachuted in from outside, and people at the entry level cannot move up. This company is really suitable for staying a few years, getting what you want, and then leaving.

Other small things that aren’t exactly complaints:

- There are factions in the company. Some people seem not to do anything all day, yet they are very conspicuous about having fun.

- All work documents use shared Google Sheets. One drawback is that if too many people are viewing the same sheet, it cannot be opened. It is common to see the person responsible asking everyone in the group to close the sheet...

- Shopee Mall guarantees authentic products, but one of my vendors once saw counterfeit products on the marketplace. Be careful when buying things and compare more:P

- My sincere advice to anyone who wants to join: don’t apply on your own; ask a headhunter to help. They will negotiate a much better salary. The salary from applying on your own is really GG.

18 days of annual leave

Snack/drink cabinet

Weekly fruit day

Good office environment

Massage room (once a month, and you have to compete with thousands of people for a spot)

The salary is not lower than elsewhere (but they will definitely get the most out of employees)

Cons

All of the advantages and conditions mentioned above are obtained in exchange for labor and time.

Regular overtime is the norm, and it is extremely rare to get overtime pay approved.

As for why people work overtime, most of the time it is not because of the work itself, but because all kinds of ineffective communication are wearing away your life. In any case, upper management has the final say.

The organization cannot keep up with the pace of expansion, and the work SOPs are even worse—there is absolutely no system in place. Adding more staff does not reduce the workload either, and turnover is extremely high.

P.S. If you joined early and secured a position, you already won. Anyway, the junior employees are the ones working overtime. v ^_^ v

Snacks, coffee, drinks, instant noodles, Wednesday fruit day—gone.

Cons

1. The company’s employees are 25 years old on average, and almost all of them are young people who have only recently entered the workforce. They have very little work experience, so you have to figure everything out on your own when you encounter problems. The old hands don’t want to teach you much either—who knows how long you’ll stay? You’re practically left to fend for yourself and can’t learn anything.

2. It’s a startup company with unclear systems. There are no management guidelines or standard procedures to consult. When you report for work, there are no office supplies, and no one knows how to request them. No one knows how to submit expense claims either. Oh… that’s because the colleagues nearby may have started just a few days before you. The turnover rate is extremely high: among the 1,000 employees at Songshan Cultural and Creative Park, someone is filing their resignation on four out of every five weekdays.

During the interview, they directly explained that overtime would be required, and quite a lot of it. They asked whether I had any concerns about this. If you can be satisfied with the snacks and drinks offered as a small perk, then that counts as an advantage. But think about it: if you were given an extra NT$1,000 in salary every month, you could buy enough snacks to eat until you were sick of them, and you wouldn’t consider free drinks and snacks an advantage anymore.

Cons

The turnover rate is extremely high. On average, I’ve seen more than 20 people joining and leaving every week; each month, the number of employees who leave plus new hires should exceed 100. The colleague who joined next door today might already be replaced next week. Think about it yourself: if this were a company with high pay and little work, would the turnover rate be this high? IT is unbearably busy—every day is spent collecting and setting up computers, leaving no time for anything else. In my opinion, don’t go there. The other departments are the same; people still haven’t left work at 11 or 12 at night. Anyway, the company doesn’t care about its employees—there will always be more candidates to find on 104. The HR team must be fully occupied just scheduling interviews every day. If you come here, don’t expect to have any plans after work. With work ending this late, unless you’re someone who goes straight to nightclubs afterward, you won’t even have enough time to get home, wash up, and sleep!

No need to elaborate; everything is the same as mentioned above (the salary at the time was 46K).

Cons

The management system has serious loopholes. I still remember joining the company last August. On my second day at work, I didn’t know how to use the coffee machine, so I asked a colleague next to me who was also making coffee how to use it. Of course, I thanked her and introduced myself as the new colleague who had joined that day. The following week, after my supervisor returned from leave, she told me that the person I had asked that day was the director of the Marketing Department, known as the “e-commerce goddess,” Joyxx. She was very unhappy with me, and my difficult days began from then on. I was constantly picked on for things such as not attending a scheduled meeting (there had never been any scheduled meeting at all), being rude to colleagues (but the key point is that I wasn’t even in the Marketing Department, and I didn’t know—let alone speak to—anyone in her department), and so on. I was extremely confused about what I had done to offend her. Later, I learned that she was someone who desperately needed to be “fawned over.” Shopee’s department leaders were, without exception, ABCs from McKinsey & Company, and the “goddess” herself was too, so the factions were relatively obvious—not to mention the cliques among interns and graduates from NTU, NTHU, NCTU, and NCCU~

As others have mentioned, the management system is inadequate: if they don’t like you, they simply get rid of you. So naturally, I was asked to leave by the goddess, and was even pressured to sign a voluntary resignation form. Sigh~ At the time, my supervisor was a young woman from Beijing who only wanted to build connections. In reality, within our CM Fashion team, no one besides me had experience related to fashion apparel or media. I’m not trying to criticize them by saying they had no taste or anything like that; I just want to say to HR: “These people are under indescribable pressure already—why force the wrong people into a pit?”

Finally, I want to say to those who are still working there and those who want to join Shopee: “good luck”

It still feels like a startup company after all. The managers are too young and too busy, and the company’s systems are very underdeveloped and chaotic. The training and evaluation systems are also very unfair, with no clear standards. What the manager says goes; if you feel wronged or encounter unfair treatment, you just get passed from one manager to another with no avenue for appeal. The managers make new employees feel completely disrespected, disregarded, uncared for, and ignored. They simply leave people to fend for themselves, without considering that training wastes both parties’ resources and time. They keep saying they are short-staffed and constantly hiring, while also continually eliminating people. They completely miss the point and fail to examine the fundamental problem, which lies in the company’s systems. Internal employees even say that the company treats people as consumable products. They repeatedly claim that joining the company means becoming part of Shopee, but after joining, you do not feel the managers’ dedication or willingness to stand on the same side as new employees and work hard together. Overall, the company has serious problems.

The interview was scheduled for 5:00, and I arrived at around 4:50. After waiting for almost 20 minutes, I was asked to move to another meeting room, where I then waited for nearly another 30 minutes.

At first, I asked whether it was a group interview. It turned out that the so-called "group" meant two people (and the other interviewee did not even know it was a group interview).

The process was extremely fast and ended in less than 30 minutes...

They asked about some basic personal information and background, briefly explained the job responsibilities, and then the interviewer hurriedly left.

I originally applied for the YOUNG TALENT PROGRAM, thinking it was a management trainee-type program, but when they called to invite me to an interview, I was directly assigned to a certain department~

Although I’ve already left, and human nature is greedy, so no matter the company, there will always be aspects that aren’t quite perfect. Still, I wanted to write down some opinions for everyone’s reference:

1. To appease headquarters (Singapore), managers will stop at nothing to force employees to work overtime.

For example: sending a notice at 17:00 telling employees that everyone has to stay and work overtime that day (this often happens in the clerical department... My colleagues are all very resigned to it Q_Q)

2. The company issues a document called the “Customer Service Specialist Quality Deadline Improvement Plan Performance Improvement Plan” (abbreviated as PIP). First, your direct supervisor will interview you, and then it goes up the chain level by level. One section says:

The implementation of the service quality deadline improvement plan is due to a specialist’s service quality remaining below the team target. It is therefore expected that this quality improvement plan can effectively improve the specialist’s service quality, with the assistance of relevant managers, who will continue to improve the service quality until it improves and reaches the target. We attach great importance to the implementation of this improvement plan. When an employee’s service quality remains below the team target, this improvement plan shall be regarded as a necessary measure before taking any disciplinary action or assessing the employee’s suitability for the position.

I have understood that the above performance in terms of service quality does not meet the company’s expectations, and I agree to cooperate with the implementation of the improvement plan. I also understand that if I continue to be unable to meet the standards, the company may take action on the grounds of unsatisfactory performance to determine that I am unsuitable for the position.

Then, after you sign it, they pressure you to “resign voluntarily” (which, yes, means they don’t have to pay severance XD).

Although I left on my own, there really was a colleague from my intake who was forced out. All I can do is cry for them (this is a copy I risked my life to keep before leaving Q_Q).

3. The internal communication gap is unbelievably deep.

Basically, the marketing, logistics, and customer service departments each do their own thing. After I left, the company opened a new “Shopee Mall,”

which promoted a “buy counterfeit, get double compensation” policy, but many of the products sold by the sellers there were also clearly counterfeit. After all that selling, I never saw any news of accounts being shut down~

4. Supervisors work themselves to death without overtime pay.

Although senior management are basically emperors, most of the direct supervisors below them are fairly rank-and-file (though there are still quite a few suck-ups XD).

I often saw them still at the office at 10 p.m., holding their laptops and preparing reports, without receiving a single cent of overtime pay. It was truly awful Q_Q

5. Blaming frontline employees for the problems caused by “Taiwanese catfish.”

Basically, this company operates in seven Southeast Asian countries, but everyone can probably imagine the capabilities of Taiwanese “catfish” XD.

Yet the company completely ignores these issues and simply thinks: users give bad reviews because the specialists aren’t putting in enough effort~

#The problem is that a large portion of the issues are because the APP and website simply weren’t properly made in the first place~!!

There are actually many more problems,

but I’ve been busy with my new job recently, so I’m writing this down while it’s still fresh in my memory, for everyone’s reference~

Pros

Although the salary is somewhat higher than at companies in the market,

The company's snack bar, salary adjustment increases, and benefits (which are being reduced) are, overall, still better than the market.

(It is said that the starting base salary for newly hired entry-level employees is NT$35,000.)

Cons

The person in charge is an overseas-based manager,

who often issues orders according to personal preferences. There is a communication gap within the company, and it is still unclear what direction the company will take in the future.
