Shopee officially entered Taiwan in 2015. With strong financial backing from Tencent, which held nearly 40% of its shares at the time, it rapidly seized Taiwan’s e-commerce market by offering incentives such as subsidized shipping fees and waivers of listing and transaction fees. Starting with “Shopee Auctions,” which originally only operated a C2C business, and combining it with “Shopee Mall,” which operates a B2B2C business, it eventually became today’s “Shopee Shopping.”

After several years of expansion, Shopee has now become Taiwan’s largest e-commerce platform. It has also become a giant corporation capable of controlling which products are listed or removed, controlling internet traffic, and managing payment and logistics flows—like an #eightarmedOctopus extending its tentacles deep into the everyday necessities of people in Taiwan.

The Alliance for Economic Democracy will hold the “Opposed the Cross-Strait Service Trade Agreement back then, rejecting Shopee today” evening event on the eighth anniversary of the March 18 Movement. The event will feature short speeches and the announcement of the harms caused by Shopee. Everyone is invited to attend, participate, and share the event, so that together we can once again bravely say no to China’s influence.
