Pros

The only advantage is that overtime is paid, starting from 5:20 p.m. However, the boss’s wife is extremely stingy about it and often tampers with the salary.

Cons

A small company with absolutely no systems in place. There is no ERP or anything similar, and finding information is like searching for a needle in a haystack.

The folders and emails inside are like a maze.

The turnover rate is extremely high—more disposable than disposable tableware.

New hires are immediately dumped with a pile of cases. There are no senior employees at all, so newcomers are quickly scared away.

Of the company’s 30-some employees, nearly one-third are interns—cheap labor in bulk, and the kind that cannot easily leave.

The boss only blames people who resign for lacking ability, says young people are useless, and claims everyone cannot keep up with his ideas and pace. He himself has absolutely no problems; everything is other people’s fault.

The boss’s wife is also a major problem. Her attitude is extremely poor, and she calculates salaries incorrectly. The company has very poor cash flow, so payments owed to vendors are often repeatedly delayed. They do not even purchase the stationery used by the company. Lunch is not provided either.

No matter how badly you need money, I do not recommend this job.

Coming here will only make you question your life.

Pros

At first, a woman conducted a brief interview and test (she explained the questions verbally, but not very clearly, and the answers were written on the back of the résumé). She was very kind.

Cons

The office atmosphere was rather serious and very quiet. The entire process took less than half an hour. After waiting for the supervisor (the owner's wife) to finish a meeting, the interview took place beside the supervisor's desk (in the accounting office). However, the interviewer kept looking at the computer and had not looked at my résumé beforehand. It took several minutes before they turned around to pick up and read my résumé. The job benefits and conditions were not explained; they only demonstrated roughly what the work involved. While looking at the test questions and résumé, they were somewhat belittling and questioned my educational background. At one point, a young man was called in and reprimanded, and he did not dare say anything. Only after they finished talking did the interview continue. I can only say that this interview was not very pleasant.

Pros

Everyone is a student, so there is no generation gap.

Cons

Work assignments in the factory are handled by students, which can lead to conflicts with veteran employees. I also feel that it is inappropriate to have a student who has been there for less than one or two months assign work.

The salary structure is strange. Sometimes money is still deducted when taking paid personal leave. What they call the basic salary is not actually the basic salary—it is the salary plus benefits combined and called the “basic salary.”

The design department’s workload is heavy. You have to assist on-site while also helping develop machines and rush drawings. If the design drawings have not been completed, the on-site staff may have no work, and the boss will come out and lecture you, asking, “Why can’t you do it if you work in machinery?” If you respond that the design drawings have not been issued yet, everyone assigned to design by the business department will be called to the site and berated.

Materials are delayed. Once a machine has reached a certain stage and materials are needed, you may discover that the material order has not even been placed yet. Then the boss comes over and asks, “Why didn’t you check whether any materials were missing when you picked them up?” Boss, why don’t you just fire the warehouse manager? Maybe my salary could increase by another 500.

Salary increases are slow. I asked veteran employees and learned that after two years, the daily wage only increases by 50. You can’t even afford a boxed lunch; factory lunch boxes cost 70, and they are not provided.

The on-site assembly technicians are all foreign workers, making communication difficult. They also do not hire Taiwanese technicians—or, if they do hire one, they soon berate the person until they quit. The fastest recorded resignation was after half a day.

I can’t say that the veteran employees are highly capable, but at least they can get the work done. Yet they are always berated by the boss, who keeps repeating, “You don’t have the ability.”

The two veteran technicians on-site are about to retire, but no replacements have been found. They are still recruiting students. It is becoming difficult to find people in Taichung and Tainan, and I heard they have gone to Hualien to look for workers. Shouldn’t there be concerns about the technical skill level?

The boss: “Explain the drawings after the design is completed.”

Whether or not there is work, as long as the boss is at home, he may come out and walk around to check on you seven or eight times a day. The pressure is enormous. It’s not that the work is busy—boss, what exactly are you wandering around for?

The equipment is incomplete, and purchase requests for new equipment may even be rejected without explanation. Unless the work is genuinely urgent, waiting a week for a single drill bit is not unusual. The equipment is extremely outdated. If the factory manager had not purchased replacements, the electric drills might be electrocuting people by now. Electrical leakage is a very serious problem.

The work on-site is highly diversified. As an assembler, you are expected to know machining, measuring, purchasing, and material preparation, as well as how to wire electrical systems. You may even have to test the machines you assembled yourself. The boss’s response is, “I’m giving you an opportunity to learn.”

If an employee plans to resign, during the month before leaving they will be sent into the cold and assigned to remote tasks, such as machining, moving materials, and other physically demanding work.

There is no proper break room. The break room is the factory’s Earth God temple, with two tables placed inside to serve as a break room. Laying cardboard on the floor to sleep is not allowed. If you are exhausted after half a day, why can’t you lie down for a while? Are you lying on your desk?

The boss and the boss’s wife strongly disagree with each other and often argue in the office. Sometimes veteran employees get dragged into it. The boss assigns you a task, and the next second, when the boss’s wife sees it, she asks why you are doing it and then harshly berates you.

The boss often comes to the worksite to give instructions. Does that sound like an advantage? Wrong. He instructs you to work one way, then returns ten minutes later and asks why you are doing it that way. Talk back and you get blasted; don’t talk back and you just suffer in silence.

Students who are not majoring in the relevant field are assigned everywhere: one moment electrical controls, the next assembly, then design, then sales. Just as you become familiar with one area, you are transferred again.

Employees with more than four years of experience earn 28K; new employees start at 30K; technicians earn 32K; and technicians with nearly 20 years of experience earn less than 40K. Are all the profits being spent on buying Mercedes-Benz cars?

Think carefully before coming to work here. The pay is low—after two years, the daily wage only increases by 50. The boss is volatile, and technical expertise is being lost. Unless you want to experience the harsh realities of society, think twice before joining.

Pros

You can learn many skills unrelated to your major. Often, employees are encouraged to find answers on their own, thereby improving themselves.

Most employees are friendly and approachable, and students generally do not have to deal with the traditional master-apprentice issues.

Cons

There is a severe shortage of manpower, yet there are also many students. Students often quit halfway through their training, and although they always say they will hire someone to fill the position, students simply cannot take responsibility for much. Usually, one student can at most count as half a worker.

There is no clear job assignment in the company. You have to do whatever you are told. The boss and the boss’s wife take your cooperation for granted.

Some employees and supervisors in certain departments are very emotional and have extremely poor attitudes. After only a few words, they start raising their voices, as if you owed them a great deal. They say that when new employees arrive, they will give them several opportunities and teach them, but in reality, their attitude becomes poor the very next time.

Purchasing-related tasks are also pushed onto others. The direct supervisor will say, “Why don’t you help them ask about it and take care of it?” I already have too much of my own work to finish, yet I still have to cross departments to do other people’s jobs. She might as well go home. It is very frustrating. When she encounters something new and cannot understand it after reading it once, she does not think about it at all and shows no intention of learning. One purchasing employee has been doing the job longer and uses that seniority to act arrogantly. Everyone else can understand the codes except you.

The tools used by the on-site assembly workers are also inadequate. The tools are not updated, the ventilation is not very good, and the equipment is not upgraded either. The protective devices on the overhead cranes are also not very complete. Unstable ladders are not replaced. Climbing up and down during on-site assembly is very dangerous.

The company has very few policies or systems. The boss and the boss’s wife have the final say. Even when they say something and agree to it, it usually may not actually happen. Reneging is unavoidable.

The salary structure is unusual, and wages are sometimes not paid on time. They say payday is the 10th, but sometimes payment is delayed until around the 15th. Small amounts may be withheld here and deductions made there. Even when the mistake is caused by internal staff handling something improperly, the employees have to bear the consequences themselves. The boss and the boss’s wife have very volatile moods, and some supervisors are the same way, causing many employees to be afraid to ask questions even when they encounter problems.

Pros

: Company is becoming younger

: Too many drawbacks

Cons

: The company loves hiring students but has no comprehensive onboarding system

: The salary calculation method is extremely bizarre; even taking annual leave results in deductions

: New hires are immediately assigned a pile of tasks, with an unbelievably huge amount of responsibility

: As for the salary and promotion system, forget about expecting any real system—there basically isn't one. You have to go in assuming that whatever you start with is what you'll continue to receive. At first, though, they always say adjustments depend on performance. How well you perform is entirely subjective, with no standards

: Labor and health insurance salaries are underreported. Salaries are paid in two installments, with no निश्चित payment schedule; once, I received the second payment a week later

: Whether you're a student, intern, or full-time employee, no matter how many years you've worked there, the year-end bonus is as small as a red envelope from your mom (less than 10,000—so pitiful, LOL)

: Bonuses for the three major festivals and birthday celebrations are given entirely according to the boss's mood, making you feel as though you're receiving charity from him. They're also ridiculously small—less than a middle school student's pocket money (under 500)

: The boss and his wife frequently have different opinions, making it very difficult to get things done. They have no consensus and only make things difficult for employees

: The position described in the interview is different from the actual work, but they always use “learning” as an excuse

: The turnover rate is extremely high. New employees don't stay, while veteran employees rely on experience to do things and basically won't help you

: The boss is extremely dictatorial. If he can't win an argument with you, he'll say it's because he's the boss. What a joke

: He often overturns his own theories but is too proud to admit it, making matters go around in a huge circle and making work very difficult

: He often raises his voice at employees and speaks sarcastically and rudely, using illogical reasoning without thinking

: The company's information is extremely disorganized; finding anything requires searching in several different places

: The distribution of work between departments is chaotic, and tasks are constantly pushed onto other departments

: The senior employees in the office are all extremely arrogant and impatient

: Lunch is not provided; ordering a company lunchbox costs $70

Those who want to experience a minefield are welcome to give it a try

Pros

1. The boss is generally a nice person (as long as work isn’t involved)

2. There are birthday celebrations

3. Most colleagues are friendly

Cons

1. Wages are sometimes not paid on time. For example, they say payday is the 10th, but sometimes delay it until around the 15th.

2. The boss’s wife has a very poor attitude, as if everyone owes her a lot of money.

3. An old procurement employee (who shares an office with the boss’s wife) is very unfriendly.

4. There is no comprehensive training system. New hires are simply given a pile of things and have no idea how to get started.

5. What the boss says today is different from what he says tomorrow; he just says whatever comes to mind.

6. The boss and his wife often disagree, making it difficult for employees to navigate the situation.

7. The company has no system, so it is very difficult to find information.

Pros

1. The boss often treats us to drinks and afternoon tea, and the boss’s wife cuts fruit for everyone to eat.

2. The factory also has a 10-minute break in the afternoon.

3. Getting along with the boss and his wife feels more like being friends; there is no sense of distance as if they were merely our superiors.

Cons

1. The boss and his wife often have conflicting ideas, which can sometimes make it difficult to get things done.

2. Quite a few employees are students, but the boss expects more than they are capable of handling.

3. Last time, we were told to use Method A, but when we used Method A the next time, we were criticized and asked why we did it that way. It makes people feel that there are no consistent standards.

4. The company does not have much of an organizational system.

5. The salary structure is difficult to understand. Labor and health insurance contributions are (seemingly) underreported, and because of the unusual salary structure, a small amount of money is still deducted when taking paid annual leave.
