What other advantages could there be to a process like this?

Cons

At Foxconn’s Mainland China A Business Group, after my interview in early March, the department head told me I would be hired. Later, I was asked to take a personality test and an English test. After some time, someone responsible for discussing compensation contacted me and asked for proof of my previous salary and year-end bonus for a salary evaluation. Then, on March 24, we discussed a possible start date of April 21 or early May, and I was asked to prepare accordingly. After the salary was agreed upon, the position was at level 7, and I was expected to start on April 21 or in early May. On April 8, they also confirmed April 21 as the date and asked me to prepare for a physical examination and submit the required documents. However, in the final hour, they said the process still required approval, and then that evening they told me that because I had failed the tests, they were very sorry but could not hire me. From the interview until yesterday, this took a month. If there was a problem with the process, that is an issue with your large company. In the end, all I got was one sentence: “Thank you for your cooperation.” Is this how a large company operates? Everyone should keep their eyes open.

Professor An only knows how to act superior and look down on employees with lower academic qualifications than hers.

She seems to have forgotten that she herself only joined Hon Hai when she was already older.

Moreover, her wife is a lesbian, and I don't even know who she thinks she is.

Do you think you're the British royal family? Does the whole world want to get to know you?

Pros

There is a convenience store and provided meals within the company.

Cons

The office desks, chairs, and computers are unbelievably worn out.

The email system is incredibly difficult to use.

The culture is cold and indifferent.

The HR staff are all scheming against one another and also engage in ostracism.

I’m not referring only to Foxconn; this applies to all companies whose names begin with “Hong,” especially the older business groups. There are many contract workers, turnover is extraordinarily high, and there are far too many employees who rely on seniority. There are also many women who try to advance through various means. Work is distributed extremely unevenly, and the various internal systems are difficult to use. However, given the company’s strong reputation, it can be worth staying if you happen not to encounter any of the situations described above.

Pros

14 months of annual salary, so you don't have to worry about not receiving a year-end bonus when business performance is poor.

The prizes at the year-end banquet are quite generous, but this is limited to Hon Hai's headquarters; other companies in the group do not offer them.

Employee lunches are provided, so people who aren't picky eaters can save a lot on meal expenses.

Cons

Work like a beast until you drop dead, and get disturbed in the middle of the night with no peace.

All kinds of infighting go on, and you have to read your supervisors' and colleagues' expressions.

Whether you can take leave depends on your supervisor's mood, and you have to fight alone alongside your colleagues.

They make it sound like the pay is generous, but in reality, you're trading your life for money.

Pros

The convenience store inside the company offers discounts.

The base salary seems to be better than those of other companies, but Foxconn does not offer the additional benefits provided by other companies. Occasionally, you may see news about Foxconn offering some amazing benefits, but you may only be able to see them without being able to enjoy them, because it depends on which legal entity your employment is under.

In short, subjectively speaking, if you are looking for a people-oriented company, Foxconn is definitely not the choice for you in this lifetime.

Cons

The culture encourages competition and is indifferent. I do not recommend that recent graduates join; I would suggest first gaining experience elsewhere so that you have a better chance of negotiating a higher-level position with HR. If your position level is low, it is probably best to stay for a few years to gain experience; this is not a suitable place to stay until retirement. Other drawbacks are listed below.

1- The systems are chaotic. After joining, you need to apply for access to various systems. There is supposedly a learning website, but it is entirely in Simplified Chinese.

2- The culture is indifferent and encourages competition. Teams appear to cooperate, but in reality they compete with one another.

3- The office environment is old. The chairs in meeting rooms and at individual workstations are dirty and uncomfortable. Many colleagues simply buy their own chairs. Cardboard boxes, equipment, and goods are also placed throughout the office.

4- Only desktop computers are provided, and the application process takes a long time. Managers from several departments will directly ask you to purchase a laptop yourself when you join.

5- You have to compete for the nearby parking spaces, while the distant ones are far from the office. However, this depends somewhat on the individual; some colleagues come to the office at 7 a.m. just to park nearby.

6- You cannot use the elevators without submitting an application approved by a budget-authorizing manager.

7- Promotions are difficult.

8- There are no additional benefits available, unlike other large companies that organize activities for employees to participate in.

9- Many companies in the same industry do not require make-up workdays and also provide additional annual leave days. Foxconn offers neither, and you may even occasionally need to work overtime on Saturdays.

10- Flexible working hours were finally announced and implemented at the end of 2021; I do not know what the actual situation is like. Personal leave requires a minimum of two hours per request. Getting half a day of public leave for vaccination is allowed, but if you take leave because of a fever or discomfort after vaccination, the time is deducted from your full salary.

11- Emails require approval from two supervisors before being sent, so you often write an email and wait 4–6 hours before it is sent to the client. Accounts that do not require approval still need to be requested.

I submitted my résumé several times, but I never received a call. No one emailed me or sent me a notification through 104 to arrange a time for a phone call after I missed it (if a phone interview was required first).

I also tried calling that number myself, but I couldn't get through to the switchboard, and then I never heard anything further.

Foxconn chairman Mr. Gou is very generous; there are currently few companies that still offer stock awards.

Cnsbg iPhone. The supervisor of the Hsinchu plant in the department, ecloud, has very high standards. Vincent’s abilities are also quite good. Most employees have degrees from national universities or graduate schools. You can learn quite a lot working with Vincent.

Cons

Disadvantages

Cnsbg iPhone. The department’s Tucheng Minsheng plant has many long-serving employees who have worked there for over ten years but are clearly incompetent. They talk all day about how capable they are, take things that should have gone to you, and may also bully you. Some of these long-serving employees have seriously distorted values.

Lu Wenbin basically does nothing and only pretends to be busy. He is very petty, so be careful and take precautions. Do not provoke him under any circumstances, or he will spend all day looking for ways to make trouble for you.

Liao Junxiong and Tsai Mingchen. These two people have seriously distorted values and are very cunning. Describing them as engaging in scheming and infighting is quite accurate. New employees are advised to be careful.

Tsai Yi-hsuan lets the long-serving employees do whatever they want and bully new employees, and even considers this a benefit for the long-serving employees.

I sincerely do not recommend joining this department. I am posting this review only in the hope that no one else will become a victim.

There are quite a lot of people coasting along.

Cons

The working environment is extremely poor. The internal and external networks are terrible, and the IT systems are unbelievably bad. When traveling to China for work, you may be pressured into working overtime on Saturdays. In Taiwan, you may be pressured to attend training sessions and be reprimanded by supervisors on Saturdays and weekday evenings. The management style relies heavily on scolding, and there is no proper training for new employees.

Salary ×14

Cons

This is really outrageous. The app development department doesn’t provide phones, and you’re expected to buy your own computer and phone testing platform.

They say they’ll provide them after you’ve worked for a while... So am I supposed to sit there and stare into space for the first few months?

For fresh graduates, the starting salary is considered high, with some variation depending on their TOEIC score (graduates with a master’s degree from one of Taiwan’s top four universities can earn over NT$50,000).

The CEO has many ideas and is determined to transform the company, and likes to give young people opportunities. (However, implementation is still very difficult.)

There is a very good free health checkup once a year.

Cons

Each business group is more like an independent entity. Different business groups may be developing the same things, so resources are not sufficiently concentrated.

The atmosphere varies greatly between departments. Some have an overtime culture, and even after finishing your work, you still have to stay until 8 p.m. before you can leave.

Speeches are often held on weekday evenings and Saturdays, with attendance lists stating who must attend and card-swipe roll calls, amounting to disguised overtime.

Overtime pay can be claimed, but no one in our department has ever claimed it.

The health check was pretty good.

Fresh graduates who want to join this company can take a look at this article:

You can also search for "海邊" on PTT's Tech_Job board.

Everything those articles say is true—don't ignore the warning signs.

My review of this company: negative

From the moment I applied to the time I joined the company, HR was extremely dishonest. They said the salary would be NT$50,000 a month (HR asked, “Would NT$50,000 a month be acceptable?”).

After receiving my first month’s salary, I felt there was a discrepancy. After asking about it, I found out that it was actually the average monthly amount based on the total annual income of NT$600,000...

I decided to let it go and thought I should just work harder; after all, the salary would gradually increase...

But that wasn’t the only outrageous thing...

I had already reported for work, been assigned a seat, and started at the company. What the heck? Where was my computer equipment?

Huh? It turned out I was expected to buy a laptop first and use it to work for the company. It took more than a month for the computer to arrive...

At the mobilization meeting, I thought other departments all paid overtime, so I could at least earn a little extra spending money. But after attending...

Huh? It turned out the mobilization meeting required employees to take turns attending without pay, and each time it wasted 2–3 hours of my time.

The company provided gift vouchers as a benefit...

Huh? It turned out these were also included in my taxable income...

That’s about it. I guess I’m just not handsome enough.

The compensation is average. For a systems company, the pay is considered above average. For the tech industry, it is considered below average.

I spent a total of three years at Hon Hai: two years at PCE and one year at NWING. I don’t know what Hon Hai is like now, but when I was there, the biggest problem I saw was that its scale was inefficient. Sometimes the intentions of senior management were good, but because the organization was so large (1.3 million employees), they were difficult to implement. The organization’s huge size also meant there was a lot of internal politics (too many units with overlapping functions and too many positions occupied by people who contributed little).

For a manufacturing company, being able to use volume to propel Taiwan to first place in the world is truly impressive. Of course, everyone knows that whether this actually contributes to Taiwan’s GDP is another matter, but this kind of environment is not very suitable for young people. To rise to the level you have in mind, you might spend your entire life and still not necessarily get there.

If you are under thirty, I recommend working at a small or medium-sized enterprise until you become a manager before considering Hon Hai...
