Pros

Short hours and lots of leave. If the people you work with are good, it’s paradise.

Cons

They deduct from employees’ base salaries. You work yourself to the bone making money for them, and then if someone requests a refund, they take back your bonus if you received one that month. It doesn’t matter how long ago it was—they will still deduct it. For example, suppose they set a target of 500,000 and a bonus of 10,000. But if someone requests a refund during a month in which you received a bonus, and after the deduction you no longer reach 500,000, that means they only lent you the money temporarily, because you still have to repay the entire amount. Recently, they have been handling this proportionally, but if you resign, you still have to repay the full amount.

They often tell you to work overtime when business is poor. If you don’t come in, you know the consequences yourself: you’re done for. There was even a time when they insisted that female employees come in to work overtime on a national holiday, but prohibited them from clocking in or wearing uniforms because they were afraid of being investigated, since they would not pay them. During the Lunar New Year, employees had to work hard for their own year-end bonus. The position is titled administrative front-desk secretary, but there is no year-end bonus. If you don’t meet the target they set, you get nothing.

Also, if the Lunar New Year falls around a payday and the date is after the 15th, they pay salaries after the holiday. So if you want to receive your salary before the New Year, it’s very difficult—it will usually come afterward. No employer pays before the holiday; they just make sure employees have money to go home for the New Year. In short, it’s a terrible company. Whenever they want to exploit you, they talk about labor laws. When you are being exploited, they don’t care about labor laws. Some people have had their salary deducted until only a few thousand or a few hundred dollars remained for the month. Do you think that complies with labor laws?

If you resign, they may tell you to leave immediately, and you have to. If they are short-staffed, they bring up labor laws to pressure you. But the company’s policies keep changing, and employees never know which version is actually correct.

Tuition prices keep changing, often causing employees to be berated by students. The teaching materials are extremely outdated and are never updated. If someone reports this, they tell the employee to ask the student for a refund. Then the employee may have money deducted again, right? The company doesn’t care about you, because this allows it to reduce its own losses.

When you resign, they absolutely will not pay you a full month’s salary; they calculate it based on the actual number of days you worked. So if you think you’ll be paid for the regular days off you were entitled to, think again. If you have unused annual leave, they will not pay you for it either. So if you plan to resign, calculate everything carefully, or you’ll be exploited like many others who resigned.

In summary, the system is terrible. They only drive long-serving employees away, doing everything they can to abuse them psychologically and force them to leave, because they never fire anyone—they don’t want to pay severance.

The salary back then barely matched the performance pressure.

The money could be used to see a doctor 👌

Cons

There are many drawbacks; I won’t go into detail, as everyone has already mentioned them.

Seeing Global Village shut down, I sighed deeply

and felt that it was truly a good thing—one fewer traditional industry company poisoning its employees.

Now that the family has fallen into decline and people are kicking it while it’s down, it was only a matter of time.

Praying that you’ll overcome every obstacle, one by one—this is also the catchphrase you love most.

Pros

1. The branch’s business hours aren’t too early, which is quite suitable for me since I can’t get up too early.

2. For a sales position, the base salary is pretty good?!

3. The environment is nice. Back when I was a student, I often went to Global Village to attend classes and study, and always found it very comfortable.

Cons

1. The performance pressure is high 😫 If you want to earn more bonuses, you have to put in more effort... and have good luck too... Sometimes, if your performance is really too poor, you may be asked to write a self-review report.

2. Working alone without anyone to chat with can be a little boring, but I’m also afraid of running into difficult coworkers...

3. Sometimes having to deal with students who are relatively irrational can be quite frightening, but most of the students are pretty nice. I hope that everyone I meet in the new year will be a good person! Please, please 🥺

Pros

1. The front desk secretary's job is to recruit students for the branch. Meeting targets earns bonuses or other rewards.

2. It's essentially an inside sales role: follow up with leads at the branch or by phone, then have a supervisor or senior specialist help with the introduction. It's actually not as difficult as you might imagine.

3. In addition to students, many friendly aunts and uncles are also among the learners we serve. However, if you encounter particularly challenging learners or parents, you need to be able to maintain a friendly attitude. If you are not good at communicating, this job may not be suitable for you…

Cons

If you don't recruit learners to attend classes, it may affect your performance, and you may need to write a report…

Currently, many branches have become one-person operations. Working hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. If you need to take personal, sick, or menstrual leave, you have to find colleagues from nearby branches to cover your shift yourself. When performance is poor, you are scolded all day—the supervisor scolds you, the director scolds you, and the boss scolds you. They also constantly pressure employees into resigning voluntarily because the company does not want to pay severance, using every possible means to force employees to leave. The boss even personally makes loud, threatening phone calls. You still have to answer the boss’s calls after work. This is the first time I have had such an unbearable job... It would be one thing if there were no year-end bonus, but even the most basic bonuses are difficult to receive. No wonder the turnover rate among front-desk staff is extremely high.

Pros

1. The teachers and classmates are all very friendly, like family.

2. The work environment and equipment are both good, and the environment is uncomplicated.

3. You don't have to go out to businesses or stores to do cold outreach.

4. There are two people working at each branch, so there isn't much backbiting in the break room.

(But having fewer people also has its drawbacks, which I'll mention later.)

Cons

1. I don't know whether this counts as a drawback. This job is performance-oriented by nature, and I knew that before joining. I chose a sales-oriented job because I wanted to earn a little more money, and of course I knew there would be performance pressure. You just have to adapt to each director's different management style. (I personally see this as training for adaptability.)

2. Same as above. Regarding those who criticized the area directors earlier, perhaps they were being pressured over performance? Their tone isn't always very pleasant when they reprimand you... but looking at it from another angle, the directors have also helped me close some cases, so they must be under quite a bit of pressure too. (When classmates are furious, they specifically ask to speak with them...) Put yourself in their shoes: if I became someone in this role one day, how would I manage both people and their morale while also meeting performance targets? In short, as long as you handle the matters that need to be handled and do your best on performance, things are basically peaceful.

3. This may or may not count as a drawback too: coworkers. (You run into unhelpful teammates in every workplace; objectively speaking, you can't blame Global Village entirely.) It is incredibly frustrating to encounter irresponsible coworkers who leave things undone, coast until the end of every day, act as if everything is your responsibility just because you're more experienced, and show none of the attitude of a newcomer. They don't do anything when you explain things nicely, then blame you for not teaching them when something goes wrong; say one word to them and they take it personally. We're all adults who have entered the workforce—what are they so sensitive about? On top of that, they don't answer the phone and disappear for the entire day, leaving you to cover their shift at the last minute. (There are only two people at each branch, so when one person suddenly doesn't show up, it burdens the other.) Then they show no remorse whatsoever and suddenly say they're quitting! Dragging everyone else down like that is truly awful!

There have been too many negative comments here, so let me give a calm conclusion!

I believe that no matter which workplace you join, you need to have a basic understanding of work and the right attitude. You also need to adjust your mindset and deal with whatever situations arise at work; only then can those experiences become your own. A friend of mine started a restaurant and it wasn't any easier—they also encountered some ridiculous employees who didn't show up the next day or slacked off, constantly hiding away and scrolling on their phones...

Having lots of money, little work, a short commute, and easygoing coworkers—getting everything at once is not very likely. It's as difficult as looking for a boyfriend who is tall, handsome, rich, gentle, considerate, generous, loyal, not a cheater, and always available whenever you call... You just have to decide which factor matters most to you.

Take responsibility for the choices you make. If you choose to work here, make good use of the opportunity to earn money or improve your interpersonal and task-management skills. If you decide to leave, make sure to hand things over properly so you don't cause trouble for the person who takes over. The Global Village work environment really isn't bad; as for problems with people, that's simply a matter of luck that you encounter in every workplace.

We're all just out here trying to make a living, so why make things so hard and exhaust your coworkers?!.

Pros

1. You need to be extremely healthy! (If you don’t meet your performance targets, you can’t leave work, and you need tremendous physical stamina to cope with going to work the next day 🧛‍♂️)

2. Your heart needs to be in good condition (If you don’t meet your targets on promotional days, you’ll be angrily berated on the spot, bombarded with sarcastic remarks, and relentlessly mocked. Your heart has to be strong enough to survive 🫀)

3. You need to have quite a bit of savings (Because when you don’t meet your targets, the supervisor will use subtle, forceful, and indirect ways to guide you into buying courses and persuade you to attend classes. Just think: you haven’t even earned any money yet, and you already have to pay out 💸)

4. You should be planning to get pregnant and have children! Those who want to bring honor to the country by increasing the birth rate are a great fit (because as soon as the company finds out you’re pregnant, it will do everything it can to make you resign early! Then you can go home and prepare for childbirth early 🤰🏼)

5. Be an online celebrity (As soon as you start work, you’re online and monitored by the company and the supervisor, as well as watched through surveillance cameras! A live-action reality show 🤳🏻)

6. Don’t be afraid of being bored at work (As soon as you start work, you’ll have to handle trainees’ refund requests—and refunds are deducted from your salary. Someone once received only NT$700 in salary for an entire month 🥹)

7. Use overtime to build relationships with your coworkers (Don’t even think about overtime pay. If you ask the company for overtime pay, you’ll immediately be put on the company’s blacklist! You’ll be packing up and leaving very soon 😏)

8. Have a good relationship with the trainees and the company (Someone I know had previously bought courses that they were unable to attend. When they went to a branch to request a refund, the company refused to refund them. The trainee was so angry that they filed a complaint with the Consumer Protection Officer. Eventually, the matter even came to the attention of the Education Bureau. The company then joined forces with the Taichung front desk staff to lie that the trainee had to sign a refund consent form before receiving a refund (solely to conceal the fact that the refund had not been issued and to deal with the Education Bureau). As a result, eight months have passed and the trainee still has not received their NT$220,000 in tuition fees back. It feels somewhat similar to going to the Philippines to work in a scam operation ☺️

This truly challenging job is perfect for people brave enough to go to the interview 😁

I’m a returning front-desk employee. When I first came back, there were definitely many things I wasn’t used to, since a lot had been updated. After working at another company, I realized that the base salary here is actually quite good. As for the bonuses, you really can only rely on your own efforts—if you want to earn more bonuses, you’ll need to work hard and have a bit of luck!

Cons

There have really been quite a few changes compared with before. I’m still working hard to catch up and adjust, but returning to a familiar environment is still easier to get the hang of than one that’s completely unfamiliar. I hope I can get up to speed soon and earn some bonuses~

Pros

After joining Global Village, I feel that it is so much better compared with my previous job. The environment here is very clean. Previously, I worked as an administrative assistant at a small company, where the environment wasn’t very good and even the air conditioning wasn’t very cool… But later, when I had the opportunity to work here, I felt that the working environment was so much better. I also don’t have to travel around outside; I can recruit students at the branch campus, so I really feel that there is a big difference~ Also, at my previous company, the cleaning duties were rotated among colleagues. Now, Global Village has a cleaning company come in to clean, which is really great! However, if there are places that haven’t been cleaned properly, I still have to clean them myself! My previous company only paid a fixed monthly salary, whereas now I also receive performance bonuses. My salary is really much higher than before. At least, it’s very moving to see my hard work pay off 🥲

Cons

There are relatively few restaurant options near the branch campus where I currently work. If you want to save money on meals, you have to bring your own lunch; otherwise, the delivery fees add up to quite a lot over the course of a month.

Let me list three points:

1. The base salary is decent.

2. You’ll meet good teachers and students.

3. …That’s it, hehe.

Cons

No three statutory holidays

No year-end bonus

No year-end banquet

I took a look and found that there have recently been a lot of flattering reviews about the company. I’m curious: are the people who leave comments praising a company like this inspection supervisors or internal company staff? Saying that the company paid people to manipulate its reviews is simply impossible—the company would never be willing to spend extra money on any marketing!

The branch Google reviews are all handled by the front-desk staff, who are told to create accounts and post positive reviews. Now they’re even trying to deceive people on the Job Data Bank? What a joke.

Has anyone ever wondered why a company has such a high turnover rate? Not only are there no systems or benefits, but even company activities are changed on a whim, while tuition keeps getting more and more expensive.

The inspection supervisor only cares every day about whether you have sales. Every day, they call just to demand that you produce results, watching your every move through the surveillance cameras and listening devices. Whenever someone inquires about a course, they act like ravenous wolves, insisting that the front-desk sales specialist must close the deal and forcing the customer to decide on the spot. Otherwise, they won’t allow the customer to leave. If no sale is made, they only blame the front-desk sales specialist. And when a sale is made, they won’t accept a small purchase—they demand that the customer buy a course costing over one hundred thousand on the very first visit. If you close only a small sale, they even blame you for taking so little money. Seriously.

Of course I know that every sales opportunity is precious, but this aggressive approach is genuinely off-putting to both the customers and the front-desk sales specialists.

As for bonuses, compared with before, things can be said to have improved a lot. In the past, bonuses were merely lent to you temporarily in your account; whenever a customer requested a refund, the entire amount was clawed back and returned to the company. They were deducted before you could probably even earn any bank interest. Now refunds do not trigger clawbacks, but the company requires customers to attend classes for a certain period and use at least a certain number of credits before bonuses are paid. If a customer cannot meet both conditions, your bonus is gone.

That’s about all I can think of for now. If there’s anything else that needs adding, I’ll supplement it later~ Muah ^_−☆

No advantages at all

Cons

Colleagues sow discord and can't stand seeing others do well. They aggressively poach sales behind the scenes, go around saying nasty things about people, pretend to be pitiful to gain sympathy and trick trainees into getting involved, while claiming that every mistake is the trainees' fault. They are putting on a soap opera, extremely suspicious, and treat everyone like idiots. They claim to be some kind of happy company, but they must all be inflating the figures. What a joke—truly manipulative, two-faced green-tea bitches. Leave as soon as possible and the sky will be the limit. They act high and mighty, thinking they are holy women; perhaps they should change careers and become nuns at a monastery somewhere on Earth. Constantly scolding and nagging. The sales pressure is enormous. Absolutely terrible, and they even make threats!! A company that acts according to its mood. There are still some good people, just not many at all. My entire impression has collapsed.

Pros

Earth Village is a major brand and a long-established language school. When I first applied, I really hoped to work at this foreign language center because the environment was very comfortable and it had an excellent reputation. Every time I passed by and saw the beautiful reception desk inside and the staff wearing beautiful uniforms, I truly admired it and wanted to work there. However, I felt that my foreign-language skills were not very good, but I still thought I should come and apply. The application process was very pleasant, and I was also fortunate to be hired. On my first day of work, after I completed the onboarding paperwork, the company immediately enrolled me in labor and health insurance and arranged for an experienced colleague to train me. The atmosphere at work was very friendly and pleasant, and I was truly happy to be able to work for such a company.

Therefore, I think the company’s advantages are:

1. The environment is very bright and clean.

2. Many of the students we interact with come from relatively high socioeconomic backgrounds. I feel that the more outstanding people are, the harder they work, and I also made many friends here.

3. My language skills improved significantly.

4. In addition to a stable base salary, there are generous performance bonuses available.

5. It has the perfect learning system. Courses range from children’s, junior high, and senior high programs to adult conversation and test-preparation courses. The student base is very broad, and helping students find the courses they want to take also gives me a sense of accomplishment at work.

Cons

I think the company has many more advantages. As for the disadvantages, if I had to mention one, it would be that front-desk staff must have the courage to face customers, explain courses to them, and make recruitment calls. There is pressure to meet enrollment targets.

But what job is free of pressure? If you want to earn more money than others, even without a wealthy father, you can work hard and make a lot of money through your own efforts.

Pros

After graduating, I’ve been working at GVO (Global Village Online) for several years before I even realized it. Besides interacting with students and teachers every day, I’ve also made good use of the resources provided by the company during my time off, and my English and Japanese have improved quite a lot. I can even communicate directly in Japanese with the Japanese friends I met before, so I feel like I’m getting extra benefits! My friends all say it’s impressive that I’ve stayed in my first job for so long, but I think it’s because I’m naturally not shy and I like foreign languages. Working in this kind of environment is actually quite enjoyable! But most importantly, I can earn money~ Personally, I would recommend this job to people who are outgoing, lively, and passionate about sales. After all, the base salary for other sales-related jobs probably isn’t as high as it is here~

Cons

Because this job is still sales-related, strong performance pressure is inevitable. Developing good student-recruitment skills also takes experience. Nowadays, I see some of the new girls backing out before they’ve even built up any experience. How are they supposed to make money that way?

Seriously, none.

Cons

The people at headquarters, the performance managers, and the boss are all frogs in a well. They think far too highly of themselves every day, and their behavior and speech are extremely uncultured. The staff in the clerical department especially—I have no idea what they are acting so arrogant about. The front desk organizes all the information for them; they only have to enter it. They have no professionalism whatsoever, yet their tone is unbelievably rude. It is truly beyond words.

Whenever someone resigns, they deliberately refuse to provide a pay stub. That is illegal. When you ask them for a pay stub, they get annoyed and simply hang up.

Global Village = terrible company.

As everyone mentioned above, this company really is that awful. I must have been blinded to have been tricked into joining in the first place.

If you are thinking about enrolling to learn a language, please turn around and look for a better cram school. The teaching materials and facilities here are both extremely basic. If you are looking for a job, turn around as well: there is no money or future here after you join. Those who are still working here should ask themselves why they have to be belittled and humiliated every day. It is absolutely not worth it—quickly find another job!

Pros

None at all

Cons

The turnover rate is insanely high, and the company never reflects on its own problems. It only thinks that employees have let it down—a company with an extreme ostrich mentality.

The company makes no effort to improve its hardware, software, equipment, teaching materials, or instructors. All it thinks about all day is telling the front-desk staff to trick students into signing up. Once students discover how terrible it is after enrolling, headquarters and the managers all pretend nothing happened, leaving the front-desk staff to clean up the mess caused by this awful company.

The performance directors have nothing to do all day except watch the surveillance cameras to find fault with the front-desk staff, monitoring whether you make those meaningless solicitation calls (much of the data for these calls is from 10–20 years ago 🙄).

If you go to the restroom, eat a meal, or fill up your water, they immediately call to ask where you went, what you’re doing, and why they can’t see you.

Those performance directors can’t produce any impressive results themselves either; all they have left is their mouth.

This is a company that loves making empty promises and setting goals that are fundamentally impossible to achieve, ensuring that you can’t get bonuses. Even if you work hard to recruit students and someone signs up, you still won’t receive a bonus, while the people who do nothing but watch surveillance cameras all day can get bonuses because of it.

It is also a company with absolutely no policies or benefits. There are no holiday bonuses, year-end bonuses, promotions, or pay raises—in simple terms, there is nothing at all.

By joining, you can experience what a court-style company is like, as well as what it feels like to have no human rights and not be treated as a person. If a manager is unhappy, they humiliate you. After work, you may even receive calls from the performance directors or the boss berating you about your results. You’ll really be rolling your eyes so far back they reach the back of your head 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

If a performance director happens to visit your branch that day, you cannot leave even after working hours—you have to stay with her until she leaves (she usually stays for at least six hours). You will not be paid overtime for the extra hours, and if you ask the company about overtime pay, you may be blacklisted as a result. From then on, you will become the performance director’s target for harassment.

Even if you are on leave and she visits your branch, you still have to show up and stay with her until she leaves. If you don’t come, she will keep pressuring your colleagues to call you and tell you to come in. There is still no overtime pay. It is extremely annoying to have to go see her during what should have been a proper day off.

In short, newcomers should absolutely not jump blindly into this pit of shit. There are plenty of better jobs to choose from, so don’t waste your youth and time in a shitty place where you won’t learn anything. If you currently work there and can find a good job, leave as soon as possible—staying here too long will make you very negative.

There are absolutely no benefits. They think providing labor and health insurance for you counts as a great benefit 🙄. The company has no systems in place at all; they only want you to be a thoughtless, foolish puppet who does whatever you’re told. The performance pressure is extremely high. If you don’t produce results, they humiliate you, bombard you with phone calls nonstop, and won’t let you leave work on time. They may also change your work location at will without your consent. If you firmly refuse, you’ll be blacklisted from then on. They’ll do everything they can to torment you, using surveillance cameras to watch you and find fault with you.

If you don’t answer the boss’s or supervisor’s calls during holidays or after work, they’ll go crazy at you like complete lunatics. It’s unbelievably ridiculous.

The performance director watches you constantly through the surveillance cameras every day. It’s completely pathological. If you leave your position for even a moment, they immediately call to ask where you are and what you’re doing 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

Tuition keeps being raised arbitrarily; the hardware and software are the worst ever; and the textbook content hasn’t been updated in 20 years. They make it extremely difficult for you to persuade people to enroll, but headquarters is completely self-satisfied and thinks it’s the best. It often feels like they’re some kind of cult or a multilevel-marketing operation, and supervisors often talk about the boss as if he were a god.

The company also seems to think that getting to work at Global Village is the greatest blessing of your three lifetimes, and that you should be grateful to the company and obey all its instructions without raising any objections.

It feels like the boss and his wife think they’re an empress and emperor, while the supervisors seem like consorts. The lowest-ranking, most dehumanized people are the receptionists—you can only describe them as palace maids.

I strongly urge everyone not to fall into this pit of fire. It really is a terrible company, terrible bosses, terrible supervisors, and terrible pay.

Joining means wasting your life and time.

1. The sales performance is always the older sister’s; the order can be changed no matter what~

2. A certain director in southern Taiwan is super crazy; like~buying crystals to put in the branch school, smearing some “77 Good Luck” lucky cakes and the like der

3. A place full of gossip; anything can be passed from one person to another; super 56

4. The pressure to meet sales targets is extremely high; the boss will directly call you and scold you for not having “awakened” or something~

5. The teachers… (this doesn’t need to be said)

6. When students want refunds, the director never signs; they always block the refunds. Even when students are unhappy, they only go to the counter to yell, so damn unlucky

I’d like to share my interview experience: The interview was conducted via video call. The interviewer asked about my previous work experience (I also needed to give a brief self-introduction) and whether I was interested in sales work. (I had worked in sales before, so during the interview I told the interviewer that I wasn’t opposed to it and had relevant experience, so it felt like I had a better chance of being hired?!). Overall, I felt that the conversation was quite pleasant, and the interviewer was also very kind! I was nervous while waiting to be notified of the result, but I was successfully hired for the position! After joining, I felt that my colleagues were quite nice, and I also really liked the environment. However, because I was unfamiliar with and unclear about many things at the beginning, I was worried that the senior colleagues would find me annoying if I kept asking questions. But they taught me very seriously and were always willing to help me, which made me quite happy. I’ve been working here for a while now and have started recruiting students independently. Although I’m still a little unfamiliar with things at first, overall, it feels pretty good~ If you’re interested and want to make money, you can give it a try~~

Cons

I’m still observing for now, because I’ve already started recruiting students independently, so my supervisor hopes that I can meet my performance target. Of course, I do feel a little pressure, but when I applied for this job, I already knew that sales work would come with performance pressure. (The performance pressure at my previous job was even greater than here, so when I think about it, I feel it’s actually okay.) Since I also want to earn more bonuses, I feel that I can work hard to achieve it~

I applied for their admissions position. The interviewing manager was quite nice, and because they had previously been a student, they felt even more approachable (˶‾᷄ ⁻̫ ‾᷅˵). Their courses now include both online and in-person classes, which feels quite different from before and fairly high-tech. I feel this is quite appealing for admissions. The base salary and bonuses here are also pretty good~

Cons

You need to accommodate both morning/evening shifts and weekend shifts. If you are already married, you may need to consider whether you have family responsibilities. Personally, I quite like this kind of challenging work, but you still have to try it yourself to know whether it suits you. Also, because of the shift-work issue, if you want to join, it would be better to make sure you can adjust your schedule and arrangements beforehand.

The salary and benefits look pretty good, and the current bonuses are also good with no clawbacks. However, they do come at the cost of investing a corresponding amount of time and effort. If you’re genuinely interested in the cram school industry and want to apply for this student recruitment position, you may find it easier to get started at a branch in northern or central Taiwan~

Cons

Because this is a student recruitment role, there will inevitably be recruitment pressure. The industry is also competitive, and there are limited opportunities for advancement. It takes time and hard work before you can become a key member of the team. Nevertheless, it’s fairly good experience for working in any industry in the future, so it may be worth giving it a try.

Many of the teaching materials are unbelievably outdated, and teachers have absolutely no protection or benefits whatsoever—no labor insurance, national health insurance, or labor pension. It is essentially a company operating on the fringes of the law. If you unfortunately encounter a front-desk admissions secretary who sabotages you, they will even shift the pressure of their own performance targets onto you, threatening to cancel your classes if you do not have enough students. Terrible company! They charge students such high tuition fees, yet the teachers’ hourly wages are pitifully low. It is absolutely not worth spending your time on this exploitative company.

Pros

1. No need to clean, although if it gets too dirty you still have to do it yourself.

2. It "looks" easy, so others will think your English is very good.

Cons

1. If you encounter a long-serving colleague, you will be miserable. They dump all the work they do not want to do on you, and even if they steal your performance credits, you can only be angry but dare not say anything, because the company most likes to listen to the long-serving colleague's one-sided story. You will not even know how you were smeared. If you offend them, the classes assigned to you will all be taken away by that long-serving colleague. The company does not care about the quality of its teachers at all; it only wants to have a teacher.

2. The front desk is the lowest-ranking position in Global Village. Whenever there is a problem, it is always the front desk's fault, and you are not allowed to argue; otherwise, you will be smeared. The system is also structured so that each level answers to the one above it, so people at the bottom can never speak directly with upper management and must go through the supervisor. The supervisor is also afraid of getting involved and will only tell you to endure it or lie. If you offend the supervisor, you will never know which sword was used against you.

3. Orders change in an instant—pay attention!! I mean "in a second." Performance pressure depends on the individual. Those who understand sales scripts and are less afraid of trouble will definitely have excellent performance. Most of the problems I encountered were, "That is different from what the front desk told me at the time." That's right, because the company's orders change in an instant. The previous plan printed in the contract was one thing, while what the front desk said was another. As a result, students would come back and argue about the benefits they thought they were entitled to at the time. In the better cases, they would understand that it was not your fault and be relatively polite. In the worse cases, they would slam the table and yell at you. When you call the supervisor for help, you might not be able to reach them, or they might be in a bad mood and answer your call with a hostile tone. In any case, it is terrible: you have to clean up someone else's mess even when it is clearly not your fault.

4. Because the tuition is expensive, there are quite a few people who believe that whoever pays is king. They assume that if the front desk reports their requests to headquarters, there will be results. But no one knows that the front desk is the lowest-ranking position. If you report it, the company will think you are not considering the company's interests; if you do not report it, the students will think that they paid money and bought courses from you without receiving anything in return. You cannot win either way.

There are countless more disadvantages. I will add more if I think of any.

Advice: If you are calculating enough, good enough at flattery, and heartless enough, Global Village is suitable for you.

I hope that after experiencing this job, whatever my next job is, it will be better ^^

Cons

Everything at the beginning was already explained in detail, so as a relatively new employee, I’ll provide an update on the information :)

During the interview, they made it sound very appealing, saying things like the bonuses were substantial, but they didn’t tell you how much performance you needed to achieve to receive them.

The bonuses aside, the interview didn’t mention overtime at all. In reality, if you don’t meet your performance target, you can’t get off work. If you leave directly, you’ll be called back and harshly berated. The job title is front-desk secretary, but the performance pressure is absolutely overwhelming.

Recently, they even raised the performance target to 150,000 on the company sharing day. If everyone is that good at selling, why not just go out and start your own businesses? ;-)

Although they did mention during the interview that employees might be transferred between stores, they really don’t treat employees like human beings. They can tell you to transfer stores immediately with just one sentence, and there have even been cases where you were told to work at another branch that same day.

After you submit your resignation, as soon as they find someone to replace you, they immediately pressure you to write your resignation application and clock you out so you can leave.

I’m genuinely curious how many people weren’t tricked into joining.

You can make friends with many students; the teachers are very nice, and chatting with them about local culture or asking language-related questions during your free time can help you learn a lot more.

Cons

Constant pressure to meet impossible sales targets, with the required standard set higher and higher: I worked there for eight months, and the minimum target rose from 250,000 when I first joined to 400,000 by the time I left⋯⋯

Tuition fees kept increasing, and the front-desk staff were also required to promote renewals. The campaigns kept changing, and during the time I worked there, tuition fees increased at least three times.

When your performance was poor, the area supervisor would constantly pressure you to work overtime at other branches. However, those branches also needed to meet their own targets, so you would often work there for two or three hours without achieving anything. Even so, during your scheduled days off, the supervisor would say, “You have no sales results, so how dare you take a day off? Hurry up and go work overtime at another branch.”

On the day the area supervisor visited a branch, you had to show up even if you were scheduled to be off. (You were expected to attend even when sick, and there was no overtime pay.) You had to stay until the supervisor left. Front-desk staff on the morning shift often could not leave work until seven or eight at night.

There are many other issues as well. The people who posted earlier have already explained them, and they are all true, so I will not say more.

In short, there are many unreasonable things about this company. I strongly recommend that you d·o·n’t· c·o·m·e.

Interviewed for a customer service position at the head office

30K per month, 8 days off per month, regular working hours, and no recruitment duties

The interview process went smoothly. We basically just chatted about unrelated things (Where did you go to high school? Which street do you live on?)

They also said I could start next week.

But the next day, they called to ask whether I would work as a front-desk secretary at a branch instead,

and pretended to be considerate by saying it was closer to my home.

The front-desk secretary position comes with recruitment pressure.

You can find a lot of negative reviews online.

I said I would prefer the original position.

They said they would discuss it with the supervisor.

When they called back, they said there had been a personnel change

and that they no longer needed to hire customer service staff.

Did they lure people in first so they could make them do a terrible job,

or had the good position already been reserved for someone?

Is it really fun to waste other people’s time?

Sacrifice dignity and happiness in exchange for a salary each month

Cons

There are problems with the teacher vetting process, and the company even employed an accomplice in a dismemberment murder case. In the case involving the dismemberment of a foreign national on the Yonghe riverside, the fourth suspect arrested by police, He Jiesheng, was a teacher at Global Village. He was still teaching at Global Village when he was arrested.

The owner of Global Village does not value the quality of any of its products. The textbooks are poorly put together, and teachers are hired indiscriminately, with absolutely no training. Many foreign male teachers use their classes as an opportunity to hit on people and date female Taiwanese students. Global Village pays its foreign teachers some of the lowest hourly wages in the industry, so the teachers it can hire are also among the industry's lowest quality. More than half of the foreign teachers are emotionally troubled, uncommitted, or belong to the group that slacks off and takes advantage of the system.

Gain experience points

Cons

I was deceived during the interview process and ended up working as a supervisor managing a group of foreign troublemakers. Because the salary offered was too low to hire real teachers, they hired white people who could merely speak English—even if they only had community college degrees—and came to Taiwan to make easy money.

They were extremely irresponsible. They would often say they needed to take leave just one hour before class, and then stop answering their phones. This position also required calling each of these white teachers every day, one by one, to confirm whether they had gone to class, because the branch receptionists could not speak English. Whenever a teacher failed to show up for even one class, the customer service phone would be flooded with calls, and the boss’s wife would call you into her office and make you stand there while she berated you for an hour.

The documents for applying for a work visa should supposedly be rewritten every year, but the boss would tell you to simply change the date on the previous year’s application and submit it. Doesn’t that count as document forgery?!

Pros

The head office has no performance pressure, and the work is fairly stable (depending on the position). The average monthly salary is also several thousand dollars higher than the industry average.

Cons

There are too many issues to list; it is difficult to put them all into words.

The main cause of many of the problems is the strange boss, and I believe all the employees share this consensus.

Many company owners in Taiwan are crazy, but the owners of Global Village are particularly outstanding in this regard. The owners are a very fake couple, yet they have a rather high opinion of themselves. Although the general manager's office is held by the husband, the real power lies with the wife. The wife, who serves as a manager, is extremely afraid of playing the villain, so she uses various indirect methods to mentally abuse and force out employees she dislikes.

She governs the company like an ancient Chinese court, so many employees privately call her the Empress. If an employee does not have a smile on their face when looking at her, she can interpret it as the employee looking sour or putting on airs. She will deliberately transfer the employee to a strange department unrelated to their expertise, causing them to be unable to withstand the mental pressure and resign voluntarily, so that she does not have to pay severance. One employee also suffered after chewing gum when entering her office. When speaking with her, employees bow and scrape, and their voices must be made to sound extremely lively and cheerful; otherwise, she becomes unhappy.

The Empress herself is highly suspicious and has paranoid delusions. She always uses strange reasons to discredit loyal employees who offer good suggestions and genuinely want to help the company. Therefore, anyone who tries to help the company will suffer misfortune. Over the years, many disappointed employees have resigned one after another, but the boss has never reflected on her conduct. As a result, all current employees protect themselves, daring to be angry but not to speak, and no one dares to make suggestions. Everyone keeps their heads down and silently follows methods that should have been updated 800 years ago. Global Village has still not kept up with the times. It does not actively operate a Facebook fan page, either because no employee has ever suggested it or because the boss is suspicious and paranoid. In addition, this nearly 60-year-old couple is not good with technology and unwilling to listen to younger employees' suggestions, so all of the company's policies are rigidly stuck in the past. This includes the textbooks, which have not been updated for more than 20 years; some of their content even still discusses storing data on floppy disks and using videotapes. When a teacher writes to point out that the books are too outdated, the teacher will be discredited, blacklisted, and have their classes taken away. This is a company that does not know how to improve.

Then there is the legal aspect. Global Village uses accountants to manipulate the books so that many practices violating the Labor Standards Act become legal. For example, all head-office employees' salaries are officially underreported. Our fixed monthly salaries are divided into five or six different categories, such as living allowances, special-duty allowances, long-service bonuses, supervisory allowances, mobile-phone subsidies, and so on. But we do not actually receive these allowances or subsidies. These are categories they invented and write on the pay slips every month, blatantly lying to employees. Although they are all fixed monthly wages for employees' positions, they are split into several items, often making the basic salary only 50–80% of the actual fixed monthly salary. If you ask the company's HR manager, they will tell you, “The company wants you to pay a little less labor insurance each month, reducing your burden.” Is this lie treating employees as idiots? The company is supposed to bear 70% of employees' labor insurance costs. They are clearly trying to reduce their own burden, yet they pretend to be doing it for your benefit. There are far too many unlawful aspects of Global Village; the above is just one example of their practices over the years.

Global Village's management seemed somewhat better in the past, but since 2012 it has deteriorated every year. The boss has also entered menopause, becoming increasingly emotional and irrational. Because she has devoted most of her time over the years to the company, her health has worsened, which has affected her mood and patience. She is now almost unfit and unsuitable to run a company.

Now, in 2018, this is a completely awful, utterly terrible hellhole of a company. If you are a recent graduate, you can come here for two years to gain experience. Everyone else should stay away from this hellish place. This company does not care about customers at all; it only cares about profits. It also does not care about the quality of its teaching materials or instructors.

Students are nothing more than fat sheep to them, and employees are nothing more than their tools.

The work environment is straightforward, the hours are not long, and the base salary is good. Students who enjoy reading are usually easy to get along with, and the teachers are generally very NICE.

Cons

Admissions and sales work inevitably comes with some pressure, but every industry in society requires effort, and there is no such thing as gaining without working for it. Fortunately, I encountered good colleagues during my time there who helped one another, which made everything go smoothly. However, I also met some colleagues who were difficult to get along with, which was frustrating. Overall, my performance was still quite good. Later, I had an opportunity to study and travel in Japan, so I had to leave this job—which allowed me to work and learn at the same time—to pursue my dreams. Perhaps I’ll return and reconnect with this work after completing my studies.

Pros

It’s really too difficult; I can’t think of anything. I’ll skip this one.

Cons

When the inspection supervisor decides that you have no further value, they will go to great lengths to transfer you to a branch whose performance even the company itself has given up on, then wait for you to submit your resignation. The key point is that if you submit your resignation and the boss does not tell you to leave that day, they will call you every day just to make their presence felt, telling you that your performance must have a proper conclusion!! If you have not submitted your resignation, they will continue pressuring you over performance—endlessly. Moreover, the inspection supervisor is always the one who shirks responsibility most thoroughly whenever something happens, the person least involved in anything!

The company is constantly transferring front-desk staff to other branches, without ever considering that front-desk staff also need to cultivate relationships with students. When transferred to a new branch, they have to start from zero and adapt, and then the company continues saying that the front desk is not working hard enough to generate performance!

The company owner’s mind is truly that of a creature whose age increases but whose wisdom does not: removing the advantages of its own brand while continually raising prices. Yet the company’s teaching materials have remained unchanged for years, it does not care about its teaching staff, and teachers receive absolutely no benefits. As long as the boss is unhappy with a teacher, they remove that teacher’s classes. They pay less than others while still wanting to hire highly outstanding teachers! The owner firmly believes that junior alumni who graduated from the same university are always the best, and the standards vary wildly depending on the person!!

The most classic example is exploiting front-desk staff who genuinely work hard for performance. When a student requests a refund, regardless of how long ago the related performance occurred, the company insists on reclaiming and deducting it. As long as the front-desk employee is still employed, the deductions are ~end~less~! Then they tell you to work harder for performance (so they can deduct more)!! In the past, they even forced front-desk staff to write a “voluntary deduction declaration,” and if the amount was too high, to request that the company allow installments. Now a written declaration is no longer required because the company pays performance bonuses under different names, allowing it to automatically deduct everything from you!! How considerate. This is a company that operates in the gray areas of the law—where is the justice!!

At the end of every month, the company makes it sound nice by saying that employees may work “voluntary overtime, with no pressure,” but in reality, if you have not met your performance target, you should be prepared to be severely lectured if you do not work overtime. And even if you do work overtime, you will not receive overtime pay, because the company does not allow you to clock in. In the past, it even prohibited you from wearing your uniform while working overtime!!

The boss rewards students who make the most noise!! So, if you encounter something unreasonable at Global Village, it really is not necessarily the front desk’s fault; there is a very high possibility that it is the company owner’s policy, which changes from day to day! Don’t hesitate to contact the Consumer Foundation or send a certified letter as evidence—the company will handle it as an urgent case.

There are simply far too many problems. Don’t come here...

The quality of the teaching staff varies widely

I taught at Global Village for four years, and I still had to argue with the front desk myself just to get an extra NT$20 per hour

It’s suitable for building up teaching experience, but I don’t recommend staying for long

Also, part-time instructors don’t even receive labor or health insurance

The colleagues, students, and teachers at this branch are kind and considerate.

Cons

The inspection supervisor is your superior.

She takes all the benefits, while you bear the drawbacks.

She repeatedly claims that she will help you appeal to the company and report students’ complaints to the empress, but when she comes back, she only puts on a show and pretends to have asked. When the front desk points out problems, the supervisor instead speaks up for the company…

The company has completely confused its priorities: it only raises tuition fees, pressures the front desk to meet performance targets, forces students to renew their enrollment, cuts classes to save costs, and cares about having someone teach rather than the quality of the teaching staff…

After students enroll, when they request refunds because of problems arising from the teaching staff, employees are made to bear the cost and repay the bonuses to the company!

The moment you mention resigning, they immediately want you to leave—unless they are short-staffed and keep you for a while. But as soon as they interview a new person, they want you to leave “right away”!

A completely heartless employer!

They will never pay you your monthly salary either—even if you set your final date at the end of the month, and even after deducting your unused and regular leave, it still falls on the end-of-month date, they will pressure you to leave “early”! This is when you should bring up the Labor Bureau!

The money-hungry empress is oblivious to her own behavior, yet keeps blaming employees for submitting resignations one after another and calling it terrible (the key point is that everyone gives one month’s notice! So who exactly is terrible?).

Why don’t you think about why the turnover rate is so high?

Shouldn’t you go out among the public and listen to the voices of your customers—the students of Global Village?

Bonus clawback system…

The salary is: base pay + bonus

Base pay (very low), bonus (the threshold is very high)

Even if you work extremely hard to reach the bonus threshold,

if a student requests a refund, the company will ask you to pay the money back…

This is the first time I’ve heard of a bonus being clawed back from an employee like this.

Then what did the employee’s hard work to achieve the performance targets count for at the time?

“More or less” complies with the Labor Standards Act

Cons

The bonus system is unbelievably bad. Even when you earn a bonus, it is calculated based on the minimum base salary; after reaching the threshold (at least 400,000+), you actually receive only around 3,000.

There is no possibility of promotion, and the salary is stagnant.

Daily performance rankings are monitored by supervisors three times a day.

There is no year-end bonus (the year-end bonus is 10,000 for earning the company 1 million).
