You need to choose the department and supervisor carefully. I currently work in the software department, but my supervisor doesn't even know how to use Git, and their understanding of software development completely turned my worldview upside down... all they have is talk. Unfortunately, I switched to this job and can't learn anything. Once the pandemic is over, I’ll have to start looking for a job.

Pros

1. Annual salary guaranteed for 14 months

2. Stock + stock options depend on luck; support departments receive very little!

3. Performance bonuses also depend on luck; only a few people receive the “black envelope” bonus (don’t think too much about this...!)

4. Overtime pay (1.33/1.66) can be converted into compensatory leave; compensatory leave can be exchanged for cash at the end of the year (1.5)

5. Travel allowance: NTD 8,000

6. Business trip allowance: USD 20 on weekdays, USD 30 on holidays, and USD 10 for phone expenses when traveling across a weekend

7. The seven-day leave was not cut, and you get an additional three days of “vitality leave” (which must be taken consecutively); weekends are not used for make-up workdays

*** Wistron’s variable bonuses are not particularly high, but including overtime pay, the annual salary is quite good!},{

Cons

Do some people get promoted for no apparent reason? It’s unclear what the basis for promotion is.

When you join, negotiate your salary and job level all at once—that’s the right way to do it!

*** It’s best to score around 700–800 on TOEIC before applying. There are internal TOEIC-style exams, but registration fills up very quickly. Some promotion requirements may have English-language criteria.

Pros

None.

There is currently no 14-month bonus.

Cons

At first, they made all sorts of empty promises to lure people in. During the interview, they said they would teach you anything you didn’t know, but when you actually asked questions, they either ignored your messages or became openly irritated. Besides having to endure unreasonable pressure from supervisors, the project schedules were also unrealistic. For a project that was supposed to be finished on Friday, they would not give you the equipment until Thursday, then demand that you work overtime to finish it.

On top of that, there is now also a performance evaluation system. Those who receive a lower evaluation will have their bonuses deducted. Almost every new employee has to bear this burden—it’s an unwritten rule! Since new employees would not normally receive all of their bonuses anyway, most of the time they make the new hires take the hit.

Someone previously said that Wistron is a training ground for beginners. Don’t be fooled. New employees who join departments with more veteran staff will definitely be ostracized and driven out. In some departments, you will even be scolded by the boss for reporting overtime. They will let you report it in accordance with the Labor Standards Act, but you have to endure being constantly berated.

None, and there is no 14-month bonus now!

If you’re a new hire, you may not even receive it.

If you want to experience being yelled at every day, come join us.

Cons

They made all kinds of empty promises to trick people into joining. During the initial interview, they said they would teach you anything you didn’t know, but when you actually ask questions, they either don’t respond to your messages or get outright irritated. On top of having to endure unreasonable pressure from supervisors, the project schedules are also unreasonable. For a project due on Friday, they might not give you the machine until Thursday and then demand that you work overtime to finish it.

On top of that, there is now also a performance evaluation system. If you receive a lower performance rating, your bonus will be deducted. Almost every new hire has to bear this burden—it’s an unwritten rule! Since new hires don’t receive all of the bonuses to begin with, they make them shoulder most of the deductions.

Someone once said that Wistron is a training village, but don’t be fooled. New hires who go to departments with more senior employees will definitely be ostracized and driven out. In some departments, even reporting overtime will get you scolded by the boss. They’ll let you report it because it complies with labor laws, but you’ll have to put up with being constantly yelled at.

There are no particular advantages. The company was already the kind of place in the industry where you could coast toward retirement—a career where you did not need to work too hard and could simply lie flat.

Cons

Working hard is useless because some managers have extremely serious management problems. You have to learn how to deflect tasks to protect yourself, because the managers do the same: managers who push blame onto R&D when something goes wrong and take credit for themselves when things go well are very common. Their management style relies on suppressing others through authority, especially when the manager is less capable than the R&D staff—the less capable they are, the more likely they are to behave this way. Benefits have been reduced. The annual salary package originally guaranteed 14 months of pay, but recently the two months originally combined from the Dragon Boat Festival bonus, Mid-Autumn Festival bonus, and year-end bonus were canceled and changed to be paid depending on circumstances; the amount also requires separate approval, so the annual compensation may end up being only 12 months. There are also countless other frightening stories that cannot all be listed; these are probably things you often hear about throughout the industry.

Vitality leave, happy time off

Punctual working hours, a good place to coast toward retirement

Cons

There are many clueless managers, as well as many pointless projects. It would be one thing if they were simply pointless, but they insist on forcing results out of them.

Managers who harass others can also get promoted and are not dismissed.

There have been layoffs recently, yet they are not laying off those useless people.

There is air conditioning at work.

Cons

Maybe the only way to survive in the tech industry is to curry favor with someone powerful!

There are too many managers who are unable to communicate normally with employees.

The female manager at the Hsinchu plant also likes to sow discord among subordinates.

She prefers male colleagues who listen to her and mainly talks about how bad certain people are.

She loses her temper every day at work, cursing about this and that.

She berates production-line workers as if they were pet dogs.

If you don't obey, you either wait to be fired or get deliberately harassed and made things difficult for you.

Even worse, the company's HR department seems not to know what it's thinking.

They fire employees based solely on one-sided accounts.

With this rotten apple still leading the line, it's really a case of hiring several people only for them to leave one after another.

Oh, right—the HR department at this company is gender-discriminatory.

If you are nonbinary, gay, or transgender,

I recommend that you not come, because you will be viewed through prejudiced eyes.

The company even has the nerve to post a policy saying that gender discrimination is not allowed. 😕

Pros

The benefits system is comprehensive. There are many activities to participate in in Xizhi, and there is an option to take a company shuttle to and from work, but whether you can catch it on time depends on the individual.

The department culture is relaxed; as long as you finish your work, you can leave. When problems occur with a project, overtime is inevitably sometimes required, but this is not a serious issue. The annual compensation is equivalent to 14 months’ salary, but bonuses are small. Stock depends on luck.

Cons

You need to choose your manager and department carefully; a good manager and colleagues can take you to heaven.

Promotions and raises are slow.

Xizhi is inconvenient to get to, and there are few food options nearby.

When there’s work to be done, no one is around.

But when it comes to promotions, lots of people suddenly appear to grab the spots;

put bluntly, it’s just working for those old-timers

so they can enjoy their retirement

and live comfortably;

anyone capable is driven out by every possible means

so the old-timers won’t be pushed out.

Wistron in Hsinchu Science Park left me with an extremely negative interview experience

The résumé I made available was for a technology PM position, but that Hsinchu Science Park company proactively invited me to interview for an HR position.

I thought it might be because I had HR work experience, and I was also willing to apply for some HR-related positions, so I decided to attend the interview.

I arrived early that day and went in for the interview earlier than scheduled, in a small, enclosed interview room with white walls.

At the beginning of the interview, their HR interviewer asked me what was distinctive about my place of household registration and similar questions. That was still fairly normal, and then they asked me to introduce myself.

Many teachers and supervisors had reviewed my self-introduction, and I had delivered it comfortably in dozens of interviews. It included three of my personality traits, specific work experience and achievements illustrating them, and finally the reason I wanted to join the company as an HR professional.

But when I finished, the HR interviewer looked at me with a very smug expression and said they could not hear what my personality traits were. They asked me to talk about my family background and gave the example that, if my parents had both been very busy when I was young and unable to take me to and from school, and I had walked home every day, that would show I had an independent personality.

I accepted that suggestion and gave my own version of the self-introduction.

But they were still dissatisfied and angrily said many unpleasant things to me, such as:

“I'm a senior alumnus who graduated from National Taiwan University 116 a long time ago. Every year, I invite some junior students over to chat.”

“Are you nervous? You must be very nervous, right?”

“What is your family background like? I don't want to hear you talk about what you did at work anymore.” (I genuinely think this is private.)

“I don't think you're the person I'm looking for.”

“You don't look like someone from 116. Do you know Professor xxx? He provides so many excellent resources.” (Basically, that professor was not from our department.)

“Did you use Professor xxx's resources? I get invited back every year to share with the junior students.” (BTW, I had already explained at the very beginning of my self-introduction which departmental and university resources I had used during my master's program. Were you listening?)

Finally, I tactfully expressed that I accepted their advice and also told them, “If you think I'm not the person you're looking for, then why should we continue this conversation?”

They then changed their wording and said, “I never said we wouldn't hire you. We can still talk.”

After giving me some more lectures,

They also said that they worked in HR at a company in Hsinchu Science Park, had never worked overtime, and were unwilling to work overtime, saying it all with an extremely proud expression.

I truly think they no longer understand what has changed in that department at National Taiwan University 116. They have not even heard of many of the professors. They probably just do roughly the same things every day, with little change, and wanted to find someone to lecture in order to feel a sense of accomplishment by flaunting their seniority.

This experience showed me what an unprofessional pressure test looks like.

It also wasted my transportation costs and time.

You know, just because someone goes to the trouble of preparing for an interview and drives to your company, that doesn't make you so impressive. You never know when the tables will turn and you might run into someone who won't put up with you!

Flexible working hours, vitality leave

Cons

A work environment suited to those with enough seniority who want to settle into a comfortable retirement-like role; the department’s structure is relatively older. Senior employees do not have the time—or even the inclination—to guide newcomers through the ropes. It leaves you wanting to fish but not knowing how to cast a line. Newcomers are advised to choose their department carefully; once you have accumulated a certain amount of seniority, you can seek other opportunities. From time to time, you need to appear proactive and positive in front of your supervisor, otherwise your attitude may be questioned.

The salary is low. HR even asked me for proof of my previous salary before they were willing to make me an offer. In the end, even after receiving the proof, the offer wasn’t much higher.

There are many long-time employees, so they often show favoritism, nitpick at new employees, and occasionally call them into a small meeting room for questioning.

During the interview, they said overtime wasn’t necessary. But when you leave on time every day, your colleagues report it to your supervisor.

During the interview, they said the company culture was very flexible, but if you return even slightly late from lunch or are away from your desk during work hours, your colleagues report it to your supervisor.

The interview was held in Xizhi, and all the interviewees took the TOEIC test together on-site. The department’s required English proficiency was approximately intermediate level.

The salary is not high, but it grows steadily with seniority and job responsibilities, and the benefits are good.

Holidays follow the schedule of government agencies. The workload varies with project progress: it is very busy at times and relatively relaxed at others.

If you get frustrated at work, you can go downstairs to buy a drink or something to eat and take a break.

Cons

There seems to be some degree of turnover in multiple departments. Senior employees are often too busy to provide thorough training, so new hires quickly have to manage projects independently.

Sometimes, when the people responsible for different departments meet, they find that no one is clear about their department’s responsibilities. Everyone ends up rushing around without direction, while senior employees are too busy to supervise, making the situation somewhat chaotic.

When it’s really cold, it’s really cold.

When you’re tired, you’re treated like a dog.

Entry-level technicians are all hired through an agency when they first join.

No one knows how long it will take to become a regular employee.

I haven’t been here long either—less than three months—

and I have no idea when I’ll be made permanent.

The interviewer didn’t say a word about starting through an agency and becoming permanent later.

You only find out that you’re starting as an agency worker on your first day.

First, you sign a contract with an agency you’ve never even dealt with before,

then you sign an internal company contract.

On top of that, most of the agency’s terms are very clearly unfavorable to the workers.

The agency gets all the benefits.

It really pisses me off!

If it weren’t for the money, who would want to come here?

Oh, right! They’re still hiring.

I wonder whether the company plans to make new hires regular employees from day one, or keep pulling this fake-agency arrangement.

Believe it or not, reporters might come by and turn this into a news story.

The scheduled lunch break is 1 hour (12:00–13:00).

However, many people actually go to buy lunch at 11:30.

Some people don’t even start working again until 13:30.

That means the lunch break is close to 2 hours... At least, that’s how it is in my department, but this is also its only advantage...

Cons

During the interview, they made it sound very good:

Our department offers a good quality of life and doesn’t often require overtime.

When there are projects, they won’t make you rush; there will definitely be enough time to finish them.

There is also comprehensive training for new employees.

But in reality, I was assigned a project after only one month.

The schedule was tight, and I worked overtime every day.

I was criticized for doing a mediocre job, even though I had to teach myself many things.

The new employee training was not comprehensive either.

After staying for 3 months, I worked overtime almost every day and was very unhappy with the job.

My department is EDPxxx (not RD; it focuses more on verification).

It should be fairly obvious.

However, Wistron is a good company.

I would consider coming back in the future,

but I definitely would not come back to this department.

Pros

The junior supervisor is very nice~~and really supportive of their subordinates!!!!!

Cons

1. This company has a lot of redundant staff?! A certain department hires so many people, but whenever you walk past certain individuals, you often see them browsing online shopping sites and Facebook!

That unit has some troublesome tasks on hand, so its senior manager asks junior managers from other units to attend meetings and pushes these tasks onto those units. So I really don't know what this unit hired so many people to do!

2. Some department managers don't respect professional expertise. I have already reported to her that, given the current circumstances, certain projects were impossible to carry out, or that senior management did not agree to them. But she would bring them up again at cross-department meetings, saying that nobody paid attention to her, and that nothing she said was being done or implemented!

3. The manager doesn't take responsibility and often pushes subordinates out to serve as scapegoats. All he says is, “This is your area of expertise; I don't understand it.” Then the work gets pushed onto you. He disappears during the implementation process and can't be found, only reappearing at the end, when the work is about to be completed successfully.

Mechanical Engineer:

Fresh master's graduate: A3, starting salary N (Taiwan master's degree rate)

2 years: A4, N+5

14 months guaranteed, excluding stock and year-end bonus; approximately 15–16 months annually

1. A mechanical engineering role with regular working hours

2. The benefits are fairly comprehensive (notable ones: telecommunications discounts, travel subsidy of 0.1777N, annual health checkup)

3. Overtime can genuinely be claimed, and compensatory leave is calculated at 1.5 times

4. In 2017, there were still seven days of leave

Cons

1. The pace of regular working hours is simply a little more relaxed and retirement-oriented.

Even departments that require overtime still have time to buy afternoon tea in the afternoon and eat dinner later in the evening.

2. The department's old customers have no new projects, which makes one worry about changes the following year.

3. A mechanical engineering role for those wanting to sharpen their skills may offer slow growth ((this may vary depending on the product)

The work is not particularly tiring, and the commuting hours are fairly regular.

As long as your performance is not poor, your salary grows steadily.

You can enjoy a stable, comfortable retirement.

Cons

The salary grows very steadily.

Even if you perform exceptionally well, there will not be much room for growth.

There also will not be many bonuses.

It makes people want only to work regular hours, without any drive.

That is why many longtime employees simply stay here until retirement.

They do not do much—just leave work on time, that’s all~

—————————————————

Also, Ms. M in the Hsinchu HR department of this company is the most arrogant HR person I have ever encountered.

When I did not bring all the required onboarding documents, she screamed at me.

Even when she herself had not explained things clearly, she would still blame you for it.

The English test was scheduled for around four o’clock, and I arrived punctually at four.

She still screamed at me, saying, “Weren’t you notified to arrive early~?”

I’m sorry, but the email notification only said to arrive on time; otherwise, insufficient time would affect the examinee’s rights.

I arrived at four, so I really don’t know what I did wrong~

If I had been late, wouldn’t the only thing affected have been my own test time~?

Was there any need to scream?

Besides, I was rushing to provide a report to my supervisor—it had to be submitted at short notice.

It’s not as if everyone is as free as she is~

I really don’t know whether the HR staff at this company have that much authority~

The benefits are good, and work is quite flexible.

Cons

Some departments are very demanding, while others are genuinely quite laid-back (for example, browsing online stores in the morning, ordering delivery in the afternoon, and leaving right on time). They say there is overtime pay, but you still need your supervisor's approval before you can report it. There are meetings all day long—meetings, meetings, meetings—at least three days a week. The same issues are discussed over and over and over, and there is never any result.

Pros

Regularly holds seminars and provides boxed lunches.

Has a dedicated employee welfare committee that puts a lot of effort into organizing activities.

Salary adjustments are considered above average in the industry.

Cons

Overtime is often required, but overtime hours cannot be reported accurately. Emails still arrive after working hours demanding immediate action. Even when the sender could look something up themselves, they send emails asking others to do it instead. Is the other party inviting everyone to work themselves to the bone for overtime pay, or practicing sending emails? Their supervisor also seems either not to understand or not to care, and raising the issue with my own supervisor has had little effect.

The same issues are reviewed for a year or more, as if they are reluctant to make changes because they are afraid there will be nothing to review next time.

There is no effective mechanism for eliminating employees who lack the necessary qualifications or are unsuitable for their roles.

Cross-departmental efficiency is extremely poor. It seems as if the departments were created out of fear that things might otherwise be done too well or too quickly. Everyone is incredibly passive: they wait until the deadline is approaching to pass things on to the next person, and wait until the end of the workday is near to email others asking them to do something ASAP.

Just this policy alone makes the company more generous than others.
