First they ask you to do a HackerRank take-home assignment, with questions exactly the same as those from a hundred years ago when my friend interviewed there. That alone tells you how old-fashioned and uninnovative this company is. After passing the assignment test, I was rejected at the HR stage—it was utterly speechless. Even a non-technical rookie HR person with hardly any work experience, who probably doesn't even know how to write SQL, can judge that you're unsuitable for a technical role. I was genuinely stunned. Just look up Yuri on LinkedIn and you'll find her. If you're going to interview there and encounter her, be careful. I can't believe even a complete rookie can reject candidates.

Pleasant environment; challenging interview stages

Cons

After the second interview, the approved salary had been discussed and agreed upon over the phone. Although I was still employed at the time, HR requested the names of my current supervisor and colleagues as references. After extensive discussion, they agreed to accept my previous company's supervisor instead, but after the background check, I received a rejection letter.

I provided the same references to other companies and was successfully hired. Your company's requirement to contact an applicant's current supervisor is highly disrespectful to interviewees and wastes applicants' valuable time.

Pros

The interview process is good; experts in face-saving formalities.

Cons

The six core values are just for show, and if you don’t receive a silent rejection, just listen and take it at face value. Although it’s a foreign company, what matters most in the team match is demonstrating willingness to be on call.

The salary is guaranteed at 14 months, but even new hires only earn around 600,000 per year. HR has substantial power and can reject candidates directly. Making a good first impression on senior managers is also very important. If you’re deemed a weak reject, you’ll basically either hear nothing or receive a rejection letter. If you really want to get in, it’s best to find a team member to refer you; otherwise, you can only wait as an alternate.

The company is described online as a gambling company, but its official business description is that it previously handled gambling clients and is an outsourcing company. I interviewed for a UI/UX position. Before the interview, you must fill out information online; for the salary, you can only enter a number, so just follow the company’s requirements.

1. Video interview: First, complete a 15-minute coding test using CodeSandbox.

2. Discussed previous work; it seemed they were not particularly focused on UI/UX, but rather on front-end layout implementation.

Cons

There was no advance notice about which software would be used for the coding test, so most of the 15 minutes was spent getting familiar with an unfamiliar interface.

# This is a software engineer internship experience in Taipei, not a full-time position.

Paid, NT$25K per month.

There are two or three full days of training, and someone also gives a technical or experience-sharing session every week.

The office atmosphere is good. Neither regular full-time employees nor managers put on airs, and you can ask questions at any time. Once, there was a bug that I spent a long time thinking about but couldn't solve. A full-time employee came over too, but neither of us could figure out what to do at the time. The next day, I continued wrestling with the bug, and that employee suddenly came over and said that they had found a solution. In addition to being grateful to them, I also felt their passion for technology (?), as they really wanted to solve problems when they encountered them and wouldn't completely ignore an issue just because it wasn't their responsibility.

Truly agile development. (I've heard many companies claim to use agile, but in reality it's “the requirements can be changed arbitrarily until the last second, but you still have to finish on time—come on, engineers.”)

You change into indoor slippers when entering the office. (This might be a drawback for people who don't like changing shoes, but I quite like it.)

You don't need to bring your own equipment. Every intern's workstation is the same as a full-time employee's: an office desk, an ergonomic chair, a desktop computer, and two monitors.

Cons

# This is a software engineer internship experience in Taipei, not a full-time position.

Nangang is so far away.

Ideally, it seems they hope interns won't have overly fixed divisions of labor, so everyone can write some frontend and backend code and work with the database. However, because everyone's skill sets are different when they join—some people haven't written more than a few lines of backend code, some have never touched frontend work, and some haven't studied databases yet—achieving the ideal state would require everyone to spend a lot of extra time learning and practicing. Of course, learning and practicing more is good, but it makes it difficult to finish and polish everything within the two-month internship. Therefore, in practice, there are still people who are mainly responsible for frontend, backend, or database management and writing stored procedures. (This is an understanding that formed naturally among the interns, not a rule. In fact, if you say you want to try working in another area, everyone is perfectly fine with that. However, considering the development schedule, there will still be people who take ownership of specific types of work.)

Basically, everything is tied to Microsoft, and Microsoft's services are used throughout. (If you dislike Windows or aren't fond of Microsoft's products, this is a major drawback.)

Pros

During the second interview, the manager was very talkative and friendly, and we talked about a lot of things. Although they later verbally said they would make an offer, I ultimately received a rejection email from HR.

Cons

HR did not proactively notify the candidate of the interview result even two weeks after the reference check; the candidate had to call to inquire personally. Afterwards, I received a rejection email saying that the movie ticket voucher code would be issued after completing a questionnaire. However, both the questionnaire and the movie ticket voucher code appeared in the same email, making it seem that HR did not really care whether the respondent completed the questionnaire.

Pros

The two interviewers for the Marketing Assistant / Specialist position seemed to have carefully reviewed my résumé, so nearly all the questions were highly tailored. They also gave me a movie ticket for completing a survey after the interview, which was quite unique.

Cons

The office location was really difficult to find, and HR did not answer the phone when I called to ask for directions, which left me quite stunned at the time.

Pros

Game development, with C# as the primary programming language.

The first interview round was an online programming test, and there was plenty of time. I made one mistake at the time and mentioned that I wasn't familiar with JavaScript, but I still passed. At the on-site interview, there was a whiteboard question involving a sorting algorithm. After I finished writing it, they asked whether there were any other approaches. I changed it to a recursive solution and passed. Because I was applying to the company for game development and it was my first job search, I said I wanted to think about it after not receiving a verbal offer, and there was no follow-up.

P.S. You couldn't see the office when entering the company, so it felt very strange.

Cons

Game development; the office was hidden and the atmosphere was strange.
