Pros

The company orders meals for everyone.

They also cover dinner when working overtime in the evening.

Saves quite a bit of money.

Cons

A company where you can’t survive unless you suck up to the boss...

If you keep too low a profile, you’ll be criticized for not doing anything.

They drive people to the point of resigning, then everyone else has to take on their work, after which they say the others are inefficient and therefore need to work overtime—without overtime pay. There’s also one extremely nitpicky salesperson who may think they have high standards, but everyone else feels they’re just picking faults. The worst part is that the boss thinks this behavior is great and praises them for having such high standards. No wonder the efficiency is zero.

Whenever there’s an event, whether you’re in administration, accounting, design, or sales, everyone is expected to go provide support. You’d think you were a dispatched temporary worker. Even weekends aren’t your own; if something comes up and you can’t attend an event, they’ll hold it against you, single you out, and remember it until you resign :)

It’s a family business. The middle-aged male boss loves making awkward small talk. If you can’t keep the conversation going, he’ll say, “Why don’t you ever talk? You’re so quiet” (呵).

The boss’s wife is relatively okay, but she has a stronger need for control and is the type who wants to manage a little bit of everything.

There’s also a head of sales who seems not to know what they’re doing.

It’s best to casually let people know that your family is well-off or that you have some background; otherwise, it’s difficult to earn respect.

The workflows and task allocation are extremely chaotic. I understand that the company may be expanding or undergoing a transformation, but every meeting is about criticizing the people below, while the people above don’t even have a clear understanding of the division of work. It’s impossible to understand what exactly is being criticized, and the efficiency remains just as poor.

Pros

The company orders lunch together, so there’s no need to go out at noon. If there’s overtime in the evening, dinner will also be ordered together.

Cons

1. The turnover rate is extremely high, yet the boss believes it’s because young people today are too spoiled. There are various exhibitions and events requiring staff support throughout the year, especially during long holidays, so you can forget about taking a proper vacation. You essentially have no personal life even during normal periods. You often have to support events in other counties or cities, with the farthest assignments requiring business trips to Kaohsiung.

2. Office staff often need to support the retail stores. They’ll say it’s for you to learn and become familiar with the products, and if you can’t provide support, they’ll show their displeasure.

3. One supervisor is two-faced and illogical. When asking questions, they never listen to what the other person has actually asked. They tell you A today and B tomorrow, then blame you for not listening carefully. They like to stab you in the back in front of the boss, and constantly change their directives.

4. The work is complicated and the workload is heavy. You also frequently need to attend meetings and training sessions. Even when you can’t finish everything, you’ll be blamed for being inefficient.

5. The company believes overtime is caused by low efficiency, so it is reluctant to pay overtime. However, leaving work too punctually makes them feel that you aren’t sufficiently proactive or hardworking in the job.

6. They like to use test scores and performance to judge a person’s abilities and value.

7. They appear open-minded and willing to listen to different opinions from employees, but are actually conservative and unable to accept new opinions and ideas. They favor employees who obey them. The supervisors have extremely volatile tempers and frequently shout at and berate employees in the office.

8. When the company accepts group-buying orders for shipment, employees are required to indicate whether they can cooperate with overtime. Those who cannot work overtime will still be criticized.

9. It is a family business, and the interviewer is the boss. They show no respect for interviewees, criticizing everything from their résumé to their clothing and abilities—especially their TOEIC score. Humiliating you is just part of the standard process; after criticizing you until you seem worthless, they then push down the salary offer.

10. The boss’s wife is a smiling tiger. When she is dissatisfied with retail-store employees, she won’t say it to their faces. Instead, she asks employees to play the bad cop while she plays the good cop.

11. The games at the year-end banquet are all tests of product knowledge, while the gifts drawn are old models or products that failed to sell. They treat the year-end banquet as a clearance sale.

12. The bonus system is very difficult to achieve. If you do well, it’s considered what you should do; if you don’t, congratulations—you can expect concern from all sides.

13. There is a very high probability that the job description during the interview will not match the actual duties. You may apply for an office position but be assigned to a retail store after being hired, or transferred to another department.

14. They take pleasure in criticizing other companies’ products.

15. Coworkers appear peaceful on the surface, but secretly observe one another and gossip behind each other’s backs.

16. Employees take turns serving as the person on duty, handling tasks such as taking out the garbage and ordering boxed lunches. There is one day of cleaning each week.

Pros

None

Cons

Throughout the interview, they kept talking about how the company markets itself (talking and talking), going on endlessly, like an insurance salesperson promoting their own products. They did not discuss benefits or salary, and kept pointing out flaws in my résumé. In the end, after dismissing me, they simply never followed up. The interview had already lasted two and a half hours. They had no intention of having a meaningful discussion and wasted my time. This interview experience was extremely poor; an interview is not an occasion to sit and listen to a lecture.

Pros

There don't seem to be any advantages.

Cons

When I arrived at the office, no one paid any attention to me. I stood at the office entrance for a while before someone happened to enter the office and notice me. Before the interview, I had asked whether I needed to bring anything, and they said that I only needed to show up. However, I hadn't brought a pen, and the person who handed me a résumé form to fill out looked extremely surprised. I applied for a warehouse management position, yet they had a sales manager conduct the interview. Then, upon hearing that I was not using my professional certification, the interviewer started lecturing me, saying that they had also come from a vocational education background and that if I was no longer using the certification, I shouldn't mention it. They even said, “I don't mean to put you down.” There was absolutely no introduction to the job duties; they only kept asking, “Is there anything you'd like to ask?” They deliberately avoided giving direct answers to my questions. If they didn't know, they should have simply said so, instead of telling me that the matter was difficult and complicated, and that there was no point in explaining it before I joined the company; they would talk about it after I performed well on the job. At the end of the interview, they didn't say when I would be notified and simply asked me to leave. This was an extremely poor interview experience. The job posting on the employment website made it sound very positive, saying, “Write more in your self-introduction so we can get to know you better,” but in the end, they had an unrelated manager conduct the interview.

Pros

Low traffic volume near the workplace

Cons

1. The interviewer did not respect the interviewee, berating them over their salary, attire, and basic information.

2. I interviewed for an Internet Marketing PM position, but was suddenly asked to conduct the entire interview with the procurement team in English, while being berated on the side about how someone with a TOEIC score in the 800s could have such poor English.

3. During the interview, I was taken to the smoking area to stand in the cold wind and inhale secondhand smoke.

4. No explanation was provided regarding the job duties.

5. The interviewer promised to call me and asked me to prepare questions to ask two days later, but I never received the call.
