During the pandemic, I had a video interview for an etching equipment position at Southern Taiwan Science Park. On the morning of the interview, HR suddenly called to say that the interviewer had a meeting later and asked whether we could move the interview up by 15 minutes. I had no choice but to rush into the interview 15 minutes later. At the beginning, the interviewer was unfriendly and quite rude. Since video interviews can easily experience signal delays or interruptions due to various issues, the interviewer repeatedly said impatiently, “Can you get your internet connection sorted out? I can’t hear your voice clearly at all.” Because I was renting a place away from home, it was really difficult to control the network connection. The interview was still occasionally disconnected, and the interviewer may have genuinely become impatient. They directly asked whether I had taken a test. I said HR had not asked me to take any test, and then they told me to take the test first before discussing the rest of the interview. I was completely bewildered; it felt like they just wanted to brush me off. Later, HR’s interview did not mention anything about a test either. A week later, I received a rejection letter, but I did not feel disappointed at all. After all, if my manager were someone like that, I would not be able to stay there anyway, haha.

Pros

The lobby and the 2F waiting area are very clean

.

.

That's all

Cons

I saw that some of the reviews are quite old, so

I'm updating them to 2020:

As expected of the legendary South Gate, which abuses its power

The guard speaks as quietly as a mosquito

He gets angry when you mishear him

He gives orders unclearly, asks you to sign documents, and acts high and mighty

Does he think he's the boss?

The company's first impression is ruined right at the 0th gate (although the 1st gate, HR, is notoriously even worse)

When handing over your phone, they make you put it in a zippered pouch and sign for it

And the building security is even more ridiculous

They rummage through your bag and check every zipper

What, you haven't even gone through the metal detector—are you guarding against thieves?

You're all more ridiculous than T; all you do is leave your phone at the counter

TE

Carefulness test → English-and-numbers test → interview with the supervisor

I don't know whether there are any hidden stages after that

The tests are elimination rounds: if you don't pass T1, you can't enter T2

If you don't pass T2, there is no interview

The supervisor conducting the interview looked, from the very beginning, like they were just passing the time to get paid for a break

They treated people who had traveled all that way like idiots

After the test and before the interview, HR directly tells you that if you haven't heard anything in two weeks, you've been silently rejected

What cost does it really take HR to send an email? Mouse wear and tear?

Or would sending a canned rejection email take away the few seconds you need to order afternoon tea?

They don't even know this basic courtesy

Yet they keep comparing themselves to T

They even brought up that standard T-or-U question

That company handles even the details of recruitment like this—what about U?

While waiting for the train at the station, I happened to chat with someone who had come along, and only then learned that, besides the famous Three Watches, they had a new creation:

"The Email Watch"

The phone call said they would send an email (to the famous company's mailbox)

I waited almost two weeks but never received the email

I called, but they kept looping back to saying it had been sent

In the end, I even had to find out for myself which gate to enter the plant through for the interview

Is the internet inside dial-up?

After reading about everyone’s work experience... I really feel like the factory I work at is in a parallel universe... There are so many unbelievably cushy EQs ==

Cons

As soon as the off-season starts, they begin hunting for scapegoats. It’s terrifying.

There is afternoon tea, and after completing one year, you receive all the benefits you are entitled to. The annual compensation is roughly equivalent to 16–17 months of salary, including quarterly bonuses, a Southern Taiwan Science Park allowance, two rounds of profit sharing, and bonuses for the three major holidays. Graduates of the four top public universities, the four leading research universities, and top private universities receive signing bonuses.

Cons

The company has no future and has essentially been reduced to a pawn of mainland China. With the recent change of CEO and an incident involving an employee from a certain department stealing confidential information from a former employer, the company’s prospects are like having been covered by a national-defense cloth… 80% of the managers are bad bosses. Good departments will never appear on E04. It is best not to be promoted to a Level 3 manager; Level 3 managers are the most miserable (a promotion in name but a demotion in practice). Some FAB departments also have a seniority-based apprenticeship system. Do not go to a FAB department—you will do odd jobs and be blamed for everything. Going to ATD is best!

During the interview, the HR person looked as sour as shit.

I applied for an operator position and had to take a written test.

In the end, I didn’t even get an interview opportunity. They said I did terribly on the test and told me to apply again next time.

Fuck! I felt so embarrassed and left quickly.

There are plenty of learning resources for newcomers.

The salary is enough to get by in southern Taiwan.

Cons

1. Severe manpower cost-cutting in the advanced process department -> no quality of life and high pressure

-> Not suitable for engineers with families (the opposite is true for management positions; the cost-performance ratio is high). The turnover rate is quite high.

2. Salary growth is average.

3. The company's advanced process R&D is progressing too slowly (because of staff shortages, engineers are overloaded with miscellaneous tasks and work, making it difficult to focus on process R&D).

It is a shame for employees who genuinely want to do things well.

4. It really is constantly treated as a training ground for master's graduates. The HR department has it quite hard; many of the engineers they worked hard to recruit leave after completing their training.

The front desk at Hsinchu Science Park is quite nice-looking.

Cons

It really feels like they’re just trying to meet a quota. They assign you to a certain plant, and when you get there, the supervisor then says there doesn’t seem to be much of a staffing shortage. The supervisor even awkwardly asks, “So, do you need to go back and interview with HR?”

Even more ridiculous is that when you go back to interview with HR, they keep trash-talking other companies, saying that other companies have operational problems or long working hours or whatever. They don’t seem to consider how many people have left their own company. In the end, they’ll even tell you verbally that HR thinks you’re pretty good and that all that’s missing is the supervisor’s opinion, XDDD. If you don’t get the job, they just ghost you—so unbelievably self-important.

Pros

For newcomers who are unfamiliar with semiconductor processes, it is a good place to gain experience.

During the first two years, the salary is not much lower than TSMC’s; only after the following three years does the gap begin to widen.

Cons

1. There is a fairly high chance of encountering a bad manager. If you encounter a good manager, it is still possible to stay.

2. The company always wants to use low salaries

to ask engineers to do excessive amounts of work.

3. After more than two years of experience, salary increases are extremely limited. The system will disappoint talent who want their compensation to be proportional to their contributions.

4. On weekdays, many excuses are often used to deny overtime pay claims.

5. There are not enough people on duty, and the workload is excessive.

If you can get into UMC in the Southern Taiwan Science Park, cherish the opportunity; it’s a good place to coast toward retirement.

Cons

Please assess whether it’s right for you and whether you’re prepared.

If you fail to seize the opportunity, you’ll regret it for the rest of your life.

Pros

For reference:

5 years of experience on the FAB side at the Southern Taiwan Science Park, job grade 6, performance rating A

Year 1: 80 / Year 2: 90 / Year 3: 105 / Year 4: 120 / Year 5: 145

Regular start/end times are approximately 07:40 to after 20:00.

The end time and whether you need to be on call depend on the department; the FAB side is relatively demanding.

There is usually no overtime pay on weekdays. It is only available for weekend duty.

Benefits:

The Southern Taiwan Science Park provides a monthly allowance equivalent to 20% of base salary; currently, the actual level is approximately 17–18%.

Bonuses are now paid twice a year (the first payment is made in March–April, and the second in August).

For job grade 6, the two payments combined amount to approximately 1.8–2.5 months of base salary.

Upon promotion to grade 7, you receive an additional NT$6,000 monthly transportation allowance, as well as a signing bonus.

Basically, once you reach grade 7, you can start preparing for a comfortable retirement.

It is a long way from Taiwan G, but it is more than enough in southern Taiwan.

Just for reference.

A very good place to hone your skills. For graduates of private universities, the annual salary can reach 700,000 after one year. If you work hard, there will be quite a lot of opportunities to learn.

However, IMP is really quite demanding, so think carefully before taking on IMP.

At the very least, you will come into contact with radiation, specialty gases, and so on.

The TF for 8AB equipment engineers is pretty good, and the furnace tubes are OK too. Just whatever you do, don’t work at IMP!

As for the rest, I’ll leave it to kind-hearted people to add.
