Pros

None…

Cons

You can only say it’s a perpetual vacancy. Positions stay posted for one or two years. If you’re not actually hiring, don’t waste each other’s time arranging interviews—just keep the listing up.

“Introduce your work in one minute.” Come on, really? That’s not even enough time to introduce a single project. If you’re going to put on an act, at least make it look convincing… What a huge waste of time arranging interviews just to boost HR’s performance figures.

They even deduct money from our salaries every month for the employee welfare committee, and the items given during holidays are always inventory or near-expiration products. Doesn’t that amount to indirectly forcing employees to buy these products…

Pros

Not really.

When you think the company’s monthly “welfare products” are an employee benefit,

when you think there’s no bonus for the three major holidays, but the products the company generously gives out instead are a benefit,

when your eyes narrow into a smile,

then you take a closer look at your monthly payslip and discover that the welfare fund is deducted from your salary.

When filing taxes in May, you even discover that an inexplicable additional welfare-fund deduction was counted as income. Really great.

I was so angry that I forgot this is the pros section. Anyway, it’s also a Schrödinger’s advantage—existing somewhere between having it and not having it.

Cons

Sharing some details because I don’t want more people to go down the wrong path. This experience is from the headquarters’ marketing department.

Interview:

1. First, look closely at the 104 job listing. If you scroll all the way down and the contact person’s surname starts with ㄘ, for your own good, I recommend not applying.

2. They will provide a test before the interview. It isn’t difficult, but I recommend not taking it too seriously—just cover the key points to avoid turning it into a free proposal.

3. The manager interviewing you will look completely harmless and speak in a relaxed tone. There won’t be any overly difficult questions (though it mainly depends on their mood at the time). Like the wolf in grandmother’s clothing asking Little Red Riding Hood to come a little closer to the bed, they will all speak with a smile. This stage is mainly for the manager to see whether you are an obedient good child. If you act like a quail, you have a higher chance of being hired.

4. If you are unfortunately hired, there will be a standard process and an offer. They will also mail you a physical hiring notice, an indenture, and other documents. You can fill them out before your start date. I think this part is fairly thoughtful. As for the bank, you can open an account with Hua Nan, whose app is rather difficult to use. (Sorry—I didn’t mean to insult two companies at once.)

5. On your first day, you will fill out some paperwork with HR. Then they will hand you a retro orange booklet and a small booklet with a black, gold-embossed logo, opening the grayscale scenes in the running slideshow of your life.

6. But I really have to commend the orange booklet. It is excellent for weighing down instant noodles: thick, heavy, and large enough. The outer layer is made of thick waterproof material, so you don’t have to worry about steam wetting the cover when it is placed on top of the noodles. It can even hold down those extra-large bowls. Highly recommend taking one. (Thumbs-up.)

Work environment

1. I don’t know whether your coworkers will be from the same intake as mine—most of them may have already left—but the younger coworkers are generally nice and talented. Treasure those who can still laugh, because once you know how to laugh, you won’t cry.

2. Everyone’s workstation is fairly spacious and the desks are large enough. The drawers and chairs are just a little old, and the computers depend heavily on luck, though most are terrible and difficult to use. You can only use the web version of LINE, and Office is from 2007. Can you believe it? Children born that year are already in high school.

3. Payday is fixed on the 10th, but you really can’t let your guard down. Check your payslip carefully—when HR goes off the rails, they really don’t hold back.

4. The attendance system for leave and overtime is so difficult to use that it cannot be found anywhere in any known universe. Reporting one period of overtime directly makes you work another period of overtime.

5. They have a habit of turning off the lights for naps. If you care, bring your own desk lamp. After all, your manager doesn’t care whether you are still desperately rushing to finish a meaningless report because of one of their unhinged remarks. When they want to sleep, they turn off the lights. Natural light cannot reach your work area anyway—after all, there is no hope in hell.

6. If your art classes were always borrowed for math lessons when you were a child, don’t worry. Here, every administrative process is an arts-and-crafts project: all kinds of cutting and pasting, various sizes, sticking things everywhere, folding and refolding, folding in half and then in half again. Even a gentle fold can fold me in half, and then you still have to make it through the manual obstacle course.

7. Try not to appear too happy in general. The smile on your face and the sound of your playful laughter will bring you unnecessary trouble. Try widening your eyes and keeping your mouth slightly open, looking soulless. Work at least two hours of overtime every day. When your manager is acting up, zone out and think about your household electricity meter; things will go a little more smoothly for you.

8. Watch out for typos. Don’t say I didn’t warn you :D

That’s all for my sharing.

Finally, I have to say that this is an extremely, extremely unfortunate company. Its biggest problem is that it should have gone public.

The original founding team’s dedication to making good products, good marketing, trusting employees, and maintaining an open attitude have gradually disappeared here.

All I can say is that the company isn’t ours. As an employee, all you can do is handle the work in front of you and collect your monthly spiritual consolation payment.

And “wealth never lasts beyond three generations” is absolutely the most fitting phrase for this place. If you have a choice, try not to choose this place. Don’t even consider passing through here temporarily.

Best of luck with your job search.

Pros

1. The headquarters provides lunch and dinner; they’re fairly edible.

2. The headquarters isn’t far from the MRT station.

3. It’s close to National Taiwan Normal University, so there may be more brainy young hunks around.

Cons

Department: Marketing

1. Protect your life—stay away from King Car, or your life will go off the rails.

2. The company culture is even more bureaucratic than the public sector, and the employees are older on average than those in a nursing home.

3. A family business in a traditional industry: the boss’s children and mistress speak louder than you do.

4. The schizophrenic boss has no strategy or direction, bangs on the table and shouts incomprehensibly all day, going “ha-ha!”

5. Extremely stingy—really stingy. Whether dealing with external vendors or internal employees, they’re the same; if a taxi fare exceeds NT$200, they’ll complain at you.

6. The monthly employee welfare items are deducted from your salary, and many are poorly selling products being cleared from inventory (such as coffee so sweet you need dialysis after finishing it).

7. If you still want to join, consider any department—but if you love yourself, please, by all means, do not join Marketing. Turnover is so high that before you finish a single pack of舒潔 tissues, all your colleagues will have been replaced (you’re advised to bring your own tissues; the whole department shares one pack).

8. You think you’re the client, but you’re actually the third party; even the second-party agency gets off work earlier than you.

9. Other than haggling with vendors and learning how to take the blame, you won’t learn anything else here.

10. There is no Marketing Department, Product Planning, or Sales Department—only the Boss’s Assistant Department and the Department for Fulfilling the Boss’s Dreams; you could also call it the Yes-Men Department.

11. Throughout the company, age is basically proportional to temper, but everyone’s actual abilities fail to keep pace with their tempers.

12. Organizational changes are entirely at the emperor’s discretion. If everything becomes a mess, it’s blamed on the people below for being incompetent; “wrong decision” is never an option.

13. If you get the gender right, you can try getting promoted by shouting, “Long live the Emperor!”

14. Senior management has no ability to self-reflect—only imagination. “My ability to make money.”

15. When products sell poorly, consumers are criticized for not understanding how good they are; when sales are good, the boss takes it as proof of their own brilliance and might.

16. Departmental infighting is entertaining—you’re witnessing a live version of *The Legend of Zhen Huan*. But regardless of your title, your authority is probably about the same as Juqing’s.

17. The Marketing manager is incompetent and doesn’t look after her own people. She only pushes you and the vendors to their deaths, is emotional, likes throwing pens, and listens to presentations with a look as if you owe her money. She can’t develop proposals or provide direction; she only picks faults out of your proposals and takes the good parts for herself.

18. There are no raises, the year-end bonus is less than two months’ salary, and there are no gifts or bonuses for the three major holidays.

19. The brand favoritism is severe: small brands get no budget at all, while large-brand budgets are scattered recklessly.

20. Extremely environmentally unfriendly—one payment request means cutting down an entire forest.

Pros

The pantry is always stocked with export-quality coffee.

Benefits are distributed from time to time.

Cons

Job title: General Affairs Specialist

Job duties:

The duties themselves are not difficult, but they are extremely miscellaneous.

Support required for: preparing purchase orders, serving lunchboxes to all factory employees, distributing benefits, year-end party events, receiving VIP guests, and setting up the video conferencing system.

Job duties:

Basically, there are fixed clerical and miscellaneous tasks every day. The internal administrative assistant in the department also generally provides support as a purchasing assistant.

Aside from the purchase-order work, most of the time is basically spent being bored, staring blankly, looking at stocks, and browsing on the phone. Occasionally, I go to the pantry to chat and eat some healthy food.

The rest of the time feels very aimless and boring. About once a month, there may be an opportunity to lead a tour. Otherwise, the job makes people feel that they are wasting their lives at work. The pay is low, and there are not many opportunities for personal growth. It feels like everyone sees the job as merely serving as a decorative figure.

The general affairs department here is quite strange.

Required staffing for the unit: (nine employees)

One section manager, one team leader, two tax affairs staff members, two tour guides, one purchasing staff member, one plant operations staff member, and one receptionist.

Current staffing for the unit: (six employees)

One team leader, two tax affairs staff members, one tour guide, one purchasing staff member, and one receptionist.

One plant operations staff member left at the beginning of February, and one purchasing staff member left in March.

In short, the turnover throughout the department is very high. According to what senior colleagues said, over the past three years, in addition to the purchasing and plant operations staff members mentioned above, the following people left one after another:

Tax Affairs No. 1, Plant Operations No. 1, Tax Affairs No. 2, the former General Affairs Section Manager, Plant Operations No. 2, and Purchasing No. 1 (six people in total).

Strange, right!?

Disadvantages

The department is severely understaffed, and the atmosphere is not very good.

Pros

The HR staff were very polite.

Cons

First, I filled out my personal information.

Then they asked me about my desired salary. I answered with the salary listed for the position on 104: NT$30,000–33,000 (looking at it now, it has increased to NT$31,000–37,000).

They replied, “Oh, it may not be that high.”

Well, I could still accept that—at least I wouldn’t starve, even if I couldn’t live comfortably.

They then explained how often shifts would rotate. The listing on 104 said, “Approximately once every three months.”

They replied, “Oh... our shift intervals may vary from one week to one month.”

Okay, I could accept that too.

They then explained the working hours, as well as the possibility of being notified on the same day to start earlier or later depending on production-line needs.

Okay, I could still accept that.

Finally, the HR staff suddenly asked, “How many points did you get on the TOEIC?”

“Because this job requires fluent communication with foreigners, you need at least 600 points.”

They could have known whether I had the certification just by looking at my 104 résumé... Did the HR staff really invite me in without even carefully reading my résumé?

Before inviting someone in, shouldn’t they first determine that the person meets the requirements? Otherwise, they’re just wasting both parties’ time, aren’t they?

The HR staff then took the information to the manager. After returning, they said,

“This position requires an electrical or electronics background. If you aren’t selected, would you be willing to take the lower-level operator position instead?”

“Of course, the starting salary would be lower.”

That was something I really couldn’t accept.

I could tolerate the irregular shift changes, a starting salary lower than what they themselves had stated, and irregular working hours.

But saying something like that suggests that when they invited me in, either they hadn’t carefully checked my field of study,

or they had posted this position while actually looking for operators.

In the end, after I said I couldn’t accept it, they asked me to leave without even letting me meet the manager.

The HR staff were very polite.

Cons

I interviewed at the end of August and was notified about a second interview roughly a week later. However, after waiting a month, it is now October and I still have not received any news. At first, HR said that the department manager was abroad on a business trip and that it was uncertain when they would return. I called several times in between to ask, but was told each time that they were still waiting for an update. Even now, there has been no further response, making me wonder whether they are really hiring...

Pros

Traditional industry. The senior employees have a very unhealthy mindset and often use their seniority to suppress newcomers, leaving them no room to apply their strengths.

Also, the first time I experienced workplace sexual harassment was at this company!

The manager of the health food division would use official business as an excuse to drive employees out. When no one else was in the car, touching their legs, hands, heads, and faces was common. At first, I thought the manager treated me like a daughter.

Later, I felt increasingly uncomfortable. After I kept my distance, the manager’s attitude changed drastically and they began losing their temper for no reason.

During the year I worked there, five employees had already resigned. The manager was lax and unfamiliar with the work processes of the employees below them, leaving newcomers at a loss.

The department accountant was also very good at shifting responsibility and was another senior employee. Whenever someone made a mistake, they would scold them for at least five minutes without mercy or saving face—let alone giving them an opportunity to recover.

And what about this senior employee’s own work performance? During working hours, they used the company phone to chat with their family in Pingtung, complain about the manager and gossip with colleagues, ask their husband and children where they were, and so on.

When asked to help with tasks that only they were authorized to handle, their standard response was always: “I’m very busy and have lots of things to do. Do you think everyone is as idle as you?” (Who is actually more idle?)

When I first joined, I desperately listened to the manager and accountant singing the same tune and complaining about former employees who had resigned.

Looking back, it all seems ridiculous. Why did they never reflect on themselves?

Kymco’s benefits are fairly good overall, but choosing the right department is very important! Think twice before joining the Health Food Division!

Long working hours, increasingly meager benefits and pay, senior colleagues and supervisors with outdated mindsets, treating newcomers as disposable, or engaging in internal strife and attacking one another, resulting in a high turnover rate among new hires. The environment is poor, especially for on-site personnel who frequently switch between day and night shifts; they are reassigned before their biological clocks have adjusted, which takes a toll on their health. The only advantage is that, as a large company with a well-known brand, employment is stable, and employees are rarely dismissed unless they make a serious mistake.

The finance department routinely works overtime. Working 12 consecutive days at the beginning of the month is the norm. Overtime pay claims are always approved, so you won't lose any overtime pay, but even when exhausted to the point of death, the work still can't be finished.
