Pros

The HR staff are very nice and gentle.

The work environment is okay.

Cons

Seriously, don't assume that a well-known, large company is necessarily a good place to work.

The year-end bonus is only given if the company makes a profit.

The HR manager will interview you first, followed by the department manager.

The HR manager directly asked about the salaries from several of my previous jobs, then used them to lowball me, saying things like, “You didn’t earn this much in your previous jobs, and you don’t have that many years of experience yet. How did you come to think you could get this kind of salary?” When I told her that I believed I was worth it, it was obvious that she disagreed and only looked at external qualifications.

She also asked whether I had encountered any difficulties in my previous jobs and how I dealt with emotional issues. I didn’t really understand the purpose of asking these questions.

Even if you have emotional issues, you still have to do your job well, right?

I already had a feeling during the interview that I probably wouldn’t be hired.

The department manager came in for the interview afterward, but both of them gave the impression that they were difficult to approach and didn’t really care about the interviewee.

Basically, I think they want someone with relevant work experience and aren’t very interested in interviewing candidates who are considered newcomers to the position.

They directly asked how I would communicate with clients about their needs. This question felt like it was simply assessing whether I had experience—in other words, whether I had previously communicated and interacted with clients. If your previous company had a very specialized division of labor, I suggest not wasting your time applying.

It was also extremely obvious that they didn’t want to talk with me in depth. They asked whether I had any other questions, and after I finished, they said that was about it without clearly explaining the benefits package or policies.

Although they didn’t directly tell me to leave, their attitude was quite perfunctory.

Both were older female managers, and they didn’t seem to respect younger people very much either.

Of course, I wasn’t hired in the end. I already had a sense of that, but I figured it was just as well not to work for this kind of company.

I’ve interviewed with two companies in the hotel industry, and both gave me the impression that they don’t really value branding or design staff. So don’t assume that a large company will necessarily offer an attractive salary.

Pros

None at all

Cons

Earlier, when I contacted the Human Resources Department by phone to arrange the interview time, it was scheduled for eight o’clock. Unexpectedly, when I arrived on time, the HR staff said that the department manager was in a meeting. I had to wait for more than forty minutes before the interview began. Even more outrageous was that the manager who interviewed me was an assistant manager (now honorably retired). I felt that the five-star hotel’s standards for handling matters were very poor.

Pros

They celebrate your birthday.

Cons

Overall, this company has a few departments that are good for coasting until retirement, but turnover is high in the other departments (both front- and back-of-house). During the interview, you can ask how high the turnover is in that department. Managers do not adjust responsibilities according to the circumstances, and they do not have the patience to train employees who lack experience. The pay is low but the standards are strict, and there is no overtime pay. It is a profitable company that constantly wants to expand its business, yet it does not want to increase its workforce. Also, HR knew that I worked past eight every day, but still asked whether I wanted to work as a server in another department to increase my own income.
