How can there be a company in Taiwan that’s like the Communist Party? This is the worst company I’ve ever worked for. Because of this company, after I left this year, I paid special attention during interviews at every company I applied to, looking at the workplace atmosphere, the manager’s gaze, tone, and way of thinking, the organizational structure, and how senior management exercises power—just to avoid joining the same kind of company again.

There are cameras everywhere. The cameras aren’t for security; they’re used to monitor employees. You can’t use LINE or browse non-company websites at work. They don’t understand how to respect employees, and they yell at people whenever they’re in a bad mood. The whole family are exploitative bosses.

A company with a very strong desire for control—do not join it under any circumstances. The people who are managers there are basically the same.

The benefits described during the interview sounded like they were all pretty good? When I went upstairs for the interview, everyone looked really unhappy and seemed to be in a bad mood.

After seeing the reviews of the job duties below, I was scared off. Thanks to the experienced folks for helping me avoid a landmine.

The company does not provide overtime pay or compensatory leave. The company is understaffed, and even arranging shifts for on-site construction personnel is a problem. On average, there are only 4 to 6 days off per month. In addition, if someone takes the day off, their supervisor may still call and try to get them to return to the company.

Every week, you have to report progress to the general manager, and it often ends up going until 8 or 9 p.m.

The Liao family watches the surveillance cameras all day, as if they treat all employees like thieves. If they recognize you, they may even call the office to ask about your current situation.

Office supplies must be picked up at the head office. You either have to get them when you return to report your progress or spend time making a separate trip.

In addition, the company’s computers may not be used for LINE, Gmail, cloud services, USB devices, or other hardware and software capable of transferring data. The USB ports on the computers are fake, and searching for keywords such as LINE, Gmail, or cloud services will force the webpage to close.

The headquarters location is convenient for commuting.

4. An employee cafeteria is provided, but access to the elevator leading to it is restricted; you can only go upstairs with “authorized” elders.

5. The atmosphere inside the company is oppressive because there are surveillance cameras everywhere. The cameras record not only video but also audio, and the boss watches them more attentively than the security guard.

6. Employees may only use public transportation when traveling on company business.

7. Company computers are monitored.

8. Employees are strongly encouraged to voluntarily participate in charitable giving on holidays and chant or copy Buddhist scriptures during the seventh lunar month.

9. The company has Wi-Fi, but employees are not allowed to use it, supposedly due to information security concerns. Ha ha.

10. Employee uniforms are provided as a benefit, but employees with less than one year of service must reimburse the company on a prorated basis.

Basically, it is a suffocating company and is highly not recommended.

Getting home after 8 p.m. every day without overtime pay. After working for a year and a half, I asked for a raise but was told no.

Senior employees do no work, arrive late every day, and still ask others to clock in for them. Because they are not at headquarters, they act with impunity.

Every Thursday, I have to return to headquarters for a meeting at 7 p.m., so I do not get home until after 9 p.m.

Engineering departments also have to handle a large amount of administrative work. The document procedures are cumbersome, and every Wednesday employees are required to track the whereabouts of all documents from the previous week. If Supervisor Liao is dissatisfied with the response, they will write directly on the official documents and angrily berate the employee; the entire company can see it. Senior management is very willful and often changes the designs. Usually, a single drawing can be recalculated four times within three months. The estimating department is especially exhausting, and there are countless cameras accompanying you at work. Taking out your phone in the restroom is considered slacking off, and the supervisor will definitely berate you publicly (being berated for 15 minutes and bowing while saying sorry has left a lasting shadow). Using a phone at your desk for more than three minutes will result in a call from the general manager. Simply put, employees here have no personal space.

Human Resources also has problems. If you are unable to adapt at headquarters and want to transfer to a field position, your salary will be reduced to around 28K, and your job title will be demoted to Engineering Assistant. If you say you do not accept it, you are told to leave.
