Bait-and-switch: recruiting under the guise of hiring an administrative employee, but actually trying to add sales staff

During the interview, they kept putting me down, saying that I was not suited to be an administrative assistant, that it was very demanding, monotonous, and boring, that it would require a lot of time, that I would have to work overtime if I was not fast enough, and that it was a position with responsibility-based working hours and pay.

Then they kept saying how good sales was—flexible hours and lots of money—and telling me how much I could earn in a month, along with all the usual talk about new-hire financial incentives.

They also criticized the policies I had previously purchased, saying they had no value and could only be considered insurance purchases, and then pushed their own investment-linked products as being highly competitive.

They kept asking whether I wanted to start as a sales assistant.

I kept saying no, no—I would find it very difficult and absolutely did not want to.

They kept trying to persuade me to work in sales and even said they could wait for me.

It was truly a waste of time

Pros

Before entering the insurance industry, I had many stereotypes about it, such as thinking I would lose my friends or have an unstable income. Since I had no relevant background, I was also worried that it would be difficult. However, after actually doing the job for a while, my perspective changed.

The company's training is very comprehensive, allowing me, a complete beginner in sales, to get up to speed quickly. In the early stages, my supervisor accompanied me on client visits and provided assistance. The company's employees are all quite young, and it is easier to get along with people around the same age. Everyone helps and encourages one another, and we often dine together as well. Since starting work in insurance sales, I have actually made many new friends. In terms of the work atmosphere, it is pretty good~

Also, when I received my first month's salary, I was honestly quite surprised—it was much more than I expected, which gave me greater motivation to continue working.

Cons

Since I had never worked in sales before, I didn't know how difficult visiting clients could be. Being repeatedly rejected by clients can be very frustrating. For someone just entering this industry, the pressure of reaching performance targets is actually quite high. The turnover rate in the sales department is also relatively high; among the salespeople who joined at the same time as me, I am the only one still working hard here. That can affect my mood. Fortunately, having good colleagues and earning enough money made it possible for me to keep going~

The company operates as an insurance broker, so there are simply too many types of insurance products available for sale. For newcomers who have never been exposed to the insurance industry, becoming familiar with all these products in a short period of time is relatively difficult. People without perseverance will quickly drop out!

Pros

1. Income: I already have a job at a café, but I wanted to earn extra money, so I took on part-time work selling insurance. The company is very generous. Even as a part-time employee, when I meet my performance targets, I receive not only the basic commission but also many performance bonuses.

2. Time: The working hours are flexible. I work at the café during the day and visit insurance clients in the evening.

3. Training: The company has developed its own training resources and holds in-person courses regularly every month to help new agents like me. However, since I work part-time and cannot conveniently attend classes in person, the company also provides online courses that I can take whenever I have time, which is very convenient.

4. Team: Because I cannot go to the company to receive new information when I am working at the café, my supervisor is even willing to work around my schedule to teach me and supplement my professional knowledge (I’m so touched~~~)

Cons

1. Performance pressure: Although the schedule is flexible, sales work comes with performance pressure. Sometimes I am too tired to go out and meet clients, and if I fail to meet my targets, my income decreases.

2. Pace of growth: Although the company provides opportunities for learning and growth, because I work part-time, I have limited time and energy. Compared with regular employees, it takes me longer to get promoted.

3. Missing company activities: The company occasionally holds free activities or seminars, but I often miss them because I am working and cannot participate.

Actually, the points above are more a matter of my personal circumstances.

Pros

The working hours are flexible, so you can arrange your own schedule for meeting clients or taking breaks. The team atmosphere is also great. We often hold events and gatherings to strengthen our relationships, and everyone gets along pretty well. Outside of work, we can chat, joke around, and talk nonsense together (which actually feels pretty good XD). The atmosphere is very harmonious.

After joining, the company regularly arranges training courses, covering everything from professional insurance knowledge to practical sales skills. We use almost all of it when dealing with clients. If we encounter a difficult client, our supervisors are also very willing to step in, accompany us, and help out when we ask for assistance 👍🏻

As for the salary and promotion opportunities, the higher your position, the more you earn. Promotions are based solely on performance, and as long as you meet the targets within a certain period, you can move up. There is absolutely no need to worry about being held back by others! So if you put in the effort, the income can be quite substantial—you can earn more than I did at my previous restaurant job~

Cons

Because it is a sales job, honestly, facing performance targets can inevitably create some psychological pressure. If you want to earn more money, you have to work hard to meet your performance goals every month 😵‍💫. On top of that, dealing with clients also takes some thought and effort. After all, there are all kinds of people in the world, and if you want to build good relationships, you need to spend quite a bit of time and energy communicating. So resilience is essential, and being able to adjust and manage yourself is the most important thing! (For me, whenever payday comes around and I open my banking app to see the money deposited, all the hard work instantly disappears 🤣)
