Cons

1. Low starting salary

2. Regardless of whether employees are ambitious, they are only willing to invest in machines, not people

3. Lunch at your own expense

4. Make-up workdays are always covered by annual leave, which means that annual leave cannot be used for taking time off.

5. The performance bonus is not much, but the deductions are definitely greater.

Job opening: Design Assistant

●They require someone ready to hit the ground running, yet hire inexperienced fresh graduates

●Everyone is busy; no one provides guidance, and there are no SOPs

●Extremely high turnover

●Only the minimum wage is offered; the factory workers’ hourly wages are even far below the legal requirement, at only about 60%

This is a company that operates on the edge of the Labor Standards Act, offering the “benevolent” compensation of a NT$20,000 base salary plus NT$2,000 perfect-attendance bonus (unless you genuinely don’t need the money and are considering joining anyway, I sincerely think you shouldn’t...). Lunch is at your own expense, and NT$50 is deducted for each late arrival (although being late is certainly inappropriate, everyone should have one or two chances—deduct it after that). The boss at this company really ought to get a new perspective; their thinking is stuck in the past, and they always feel they are losing money. A narrow-minded, stingy boss is no one people will want to help.

Interviewed position: Design Assistant (previous interview experience).

After reviewing my résumé (the position initially seemed to offer around 26–28k), the boss offered 22k outright and then said that the process and time required to train a designer meant you would only be worth 28k once you had fully mastered the role.

Meals are at your own expense. The boss’s thinking is still stuck in the past, and the issues are roughly similar to those mentioned by several people above.

The interview kept emphasizing that fresh graduates get 22k,

Anyone can do software, and their attitude was very poor

Cons

1. Responsibility-based pay. Although this system may have been used in the early days of the design industry, most design companies now pay overtime as talent has been lost. It feels like this company is still stuck in the feudal era.

2. Offering a senior applicant a salary of 26K as if they were a new graduate, on the grounds that they would have to learn new things and start over at a new company, so they cannot be offered too much.

3. Employees have to arrange their own lunch. (The workplace is near an industrial area—where are you supposed to find something to eat? Is it really that difficult to order boxed lunches for employees collectively?)

4. Complaining about rising costs and salaries, saying the company cannot afford it, and asking employees to retreat along with the company. If the company is declining, it should find ways to transform instead of blaming the government for raising wages.

In short, this is just a stingy, exploitative boss. Think carefully before going to an interview.
