Pros

High interview acceptance rate

Colleagues are friendly and very patient in providing guidance

Cons

Disclaimer

I had absolutely no work experience and was a complete beginner.

I was dismissed after just one week.

Based on my observations during that week:

1. There is more to learn than in a typical small restaurant, and if you cannot fully adapt within one week, you are basically out.

2. They are not lenient with beginners or willing to give you more time to improve and continue observing your performance. Therefore, beginners who adapt and react more slowly are not advised to apply, because if you do not have a corresponding bank account, you also have to spend 1,000 to open one, and getting dismissed after working only a few days would be a complete waste of money.

3. New employees are watched especially closely. Even walking around to check on things may get you criticized for having nothing to do. I found this baffling, since my colleagues told me to walk around and see whether any customers needed help or whether there were plates to collect, while colleagues chatting nearby were left alone.

4. You cannot take holidays off. When it is busy, you work overtime; when it is quiet, they let you leave early. The working hours are not fixed, and the pay is not guaranteed. In my case, I was almost always allowed to leave early, and they would not keep new employees on for training.

Pros

The turnover rate is extremely high. If you go to an interview, you’ll be hired.

Cons

1. The Labor Standards Act is only for reference. They have their own version of the “Labor Standards Act.”

Example: If you take leave on a holiday, they deduct three days’ pay (whether you’re sick, having a baby, attending a relative or friend’s wedding, etc.—you’re simply out of luck, while the boss profits).

They do not provide the legally required number of days off per month.

In the first year, annual leave is limited to three days; in the second year, it is still only three days…

If you take more than eight and a half days off in a month (including your regular monthly days off), they calculate that month’s wages by the day (you are paid only for the number of days actually worked).

When there are many customers, you have to work overtime; when there are no customers, they tell you to go home.

Overtime has to be recorded separately, supposedly to prevent an inspection by the labor bureau. Overtime is compensated with time off on a one-for-one basis.

The benefits listed on 1111 are just for show: birthday benefits, trips, staff gatherings, bonuses…

Overall, this is a stingy restaurant with no benefits system.

If you cannot find a job anywhere else, you can try working here temporarily—but you probably won’t stay long.

Pros

The work environment is uncomplicated.

Colleagues are generally easy to get along with.

Cons

There are five fixed days off. Holidays are not available as days off, and the standards for pay deductions when taking leave are very strict.

Clock-in records are used to calculate positive and negative hours. Whoever has the most negative hours on record may be required to stay during lunchtime to work overtime and make up the hours.

If the number of hours is still negative on the settlement date, pay will be deducted. Positive hours are always said to be used in exchange for compensatory leave.

The front-of-house and back-of-house staff appear to get along harmoniously on the surface, but there are deep-seated tensions.

Although lunchtime is said to be a break, if customers come in, the restaurant is still opened for them to dine, so there is no fixed break time.

Pros

Apply immediately and you can change into a uniform and start working right away. Two meals are provided.

Cons

1. Five fixed days off are provided each month. Days off cannot be taken on holidays (regardless of whether it is personal leave or sick leave, if you take leave on a holiday, your pay for that day will be deducted, plus an additional two days’ pay, and another NT$1,000 will be deducted from your full-attendance bonus).

2. Annual leave is 3 days in the first year, and also 3 days in the second year...

3. Overtime is exchanged for compensatory time off on a one-for-one basis (if there are no customers, leaving work early is exchanged for compensatory time off).

For everyone’s reference.
