Work is distributed extremely unevenly, managers have very poor boundaries, pry into subordinates’ private lives, and share the information with others. The company culture is traditional, conservative, and rigid. All I can say is: run away while you can!

They love violating the Labor Standards Act.

At noon, they explicitly tell employees that they are not allowed to take a break.

The workload is seriously uneven, yet they also tell you to leave work on time and that overtime is not allowed.

Those who get by on connections can have it really easy.

Especially those middle-aged, unmarried, long-time female employees are the most spiteful and love giving newcomers a hard time. They have no authority as supervisors, yet they like to throw their weight around by association. The most ridiculous thing is that the supervisor really does protect her—they are birds of a feather.

High turnover. Terrible pay, with benefits that look good on paper but are impossible to enjoy.

People within the organization look down on one another and think the Taichung Bank name is embarrassing.

Don’t think you can stick it out here; it would be better not to stay in such a terrible place for even one day. It’s a waste of life.

Managers have poor emotional control and strong subjective opinions.

You will definitely be unable to leave work on time, and the workload distribution is seriously uneven.

As long as you know how to curry favor with those in power, there will be hardly anything for you to do.

If you are not someone who knows how to accommodate and flatter the manager, it is recommended that you do not join.

Compared with other banks, if you work as a teller here, you must take on multiple processing roles as one person (at least five, and sometimes even more).

If your performance is insufficient, you have to spend your own money to increase it.

A severe lack of customers must also be dealt with on your own.

There is insufficient staff, the turnover rate keeps getting higher, and the year-end bonus for the operations area is the lowest.

If you want to join the operations area, it is recommended that you go to another bank, where you do not have to take on multiple processing roles. The work is just as difficult, or even more difficult, but the salary and year-end bonus at other banks are definitely more favorable.

It is not as though you cannot find a job; it would still be better to avoid this place and find a better job.

Pros

Each branch is different. At some branches, the assistant branch manager is very friendly during the interview, while at others, they act like seasoned veterans lecturing newcomers.

Cons

When applying to other banks, the process is more organized: everyone submits a résumé through the company website, qualified applicants are notified by phone, and even unsuccessful applicants receive at least a thank-you email. After that, all new hires go to the head office for interviews together. However, at Taichung Bank, you have to submit your résumé through 104 or 1111, and each branch recruits separately. In the end, unsuccessful applicants are not notified either.

Pros

The worst part is that many supervisors lack the abilities appropriate to their positions. All day, they do nothing but use their own misguided ideas to put down employees who are smarter and more capable than they are. The coworkers are no better: relying on having been there longer and being more familiar with the work, they look down on new employees. Even though they themselves have provided absolutely no guidance on how to do the day-to-day work, whenever a junior employee asks a work-related question, they immediately start yelling, “You graduated from XX University and you still don’t know how to do this?” I would like to know which university teaches students how to operate all of your company’s various systems.

HR really likes hiring graduates of national universities, but then also likes to act as though “graduating from XX University isn’t anything special” in order to put down the employees they regard as “highly educated.” As a result, the turnover rate among “highly educated” employees is very high. People with ability and brains cannot stand staying in a place like this. The ones left behind are graduates of diploma mills who cannot find other jobs and old-timers who cling to their positions and refuse to leave.

The promotion system is extraordinarily obstructive as well. You can barely get promoted one rank even after meeting every requirement, such as obtaining N designated certifications, reaching a fixed level of seniority, and passing the promotion exam. After being tormented by coworkers and supervisors every day, who has the time and energy to prepare for all that? But failing to get promoted causes problems too! Supervisors constantly nag, saying, “You’ve reached the required seniority—why haven’t you gone for a promotion?” and so on. And no matter how many times I get promoted, I still can’t become one of those well-paid supervisors, because all the supervisory positions are occupied by old-timers like you. Rather than spending so much time and money to earn a tiny bit more pay, I would rather spend that time on my own leisure and entertainment—it would be much more worthwhile.

When employees are no longer considered useful, the company forces them to resign by disguising constructive dismissal as a transfer. You can Google “Taichung Bank + employees requiring guidance” to find examples of this company’s usual tactics. It used this trick seven or eight years ago and lost in court after the employee sued over the dismissal. It did the same thing again in 2017. My friend made the trading room system functional, signed agreements with five or six counterparties, handled complex work for the company—including arranging replacement agreements with counterparties at the end of 2016 to comply with new European and American regulations—established trading document templates, and set up trading procedures. As a result, my friend received the second-lowest performance rating, and the supervisor then transferred them to a branch requiring more than three hours of commuting each day to work at the counter. Capable people are absolutely advised not to join this bank.
