Pros

There are none—this thing fundamentally has no advantages. If I had to name one, it is in Xindian, and Yulon City is nearby, that’s all.

Cons

American on the outside, Taiwanese on the inside—and worse than a Taiwanese company. This is not a tech industry company; the exploitation and mess here are comparable to those of a traditional industry. I’ve never seen a tech company with such low cleanroom standards. Strong acids and alkalis are all over the floor. Workplace safety here is treated like air—ignored. There are tons of acid-corrosion incidents, and the company only suppresses them. The machinery is old and poorly managed. Seeing the extent of the corrosion, you’d think you had ended up at a chemical plant in southern Taiwan. Many pipelines are full of holes. Old equipment is not maintained; they only check off the maintenance forms and pretend nothing is wrong. Only new hires are pushed to inspect everything one by one, and even if they find something, nothing can be done because things are already chaotic to the extreme—to the point that even vendors give up when they see it. The PM function here might as well not exist; it’s all for show. The machines break down three times a day, and nobody wants to deal with them. Even when they do, they just fiddle with them a little and close out the work order. New hires are always treated as HL. New hires’ performance is always used as the lowest baseline. Then they complain about being short-staffed. New hires come in by the batch and all leave within three months—this alone shows how awful this company is. If you’re feeling suicidal, you can come here. Oh, and the operators here are all like gangsters—I don’t know where they found these local thugs. Everyone in Xindian knows this is an extremely awful traditional-industry company, haha.

Pros

Speaking of the pros, Universal Instruments is quite people-oriented. Most senior colleagues are very willing to share their knowledge. Of course, there are also a certain number of old-timers who refuse to leave and cling to their positions. I highly recommend working here until retirement.

Cons

The interview experience was really poor. HR broke their promise, saying that the boss had given last-minute instructions and leaving the Candidate waiting. It was absolutely obvious that they had simply forgotten to show up.

There was also a short English test. The test paper had not been updated for N years. People today, or the test questions themselves, have clearly moved in a different direction. It was obviously an English test written based on the imagination of a Chinese-speaking test writer, and the questions had been repeatedly reprinted after being scanned from the era of inkjet printers.

Later, I heard Hunter share their experience and mention the HR department at Universal Instruments. Everyone shook their heads. If you are not particularly concerned about HR’s level of professionalism, you could give this company a try. I highly recommend working here until retirement.

Also, there are many mice in the office, and someone is always leaving feces in the toilet without flushing.

No advantages

Cons

It’s been so long, yet the job posting is still up. Clearly, they’re not actually hiring.

Those planning to work in finance should be careful: accounting and controlling do not get along, and the internal processes and systems are terrible.

The head of the Controlling department has poor spoken English. Also, Taiwan does not use SAP. If you apply and get in, the manager may very likely not train or guide you. By the way, controlling is just Hong Kong people’s dog.

An awful company that you will absolutely regret joining. It pretends to be an American company but is actually run by a Jewish boss, using the name of a generic American company to deceive people into joining. The workplace does everything it can to bully newcomers. The work environment is extremely poor, with all kinds of toxic gases and strange smells filling the production line. After only six months of employment, I was poisoned, became dizzy, vomited, and was sent to the emergency room. The supervisor even said that we absolutely could not call an ambulance because the labor authorities would come to investigate. The so-called occupational safety measures are entirely fake projects intended only to get through occupational safety inspections. On average, an occupational safety incident occurs once a month, not including those that are covered up. Fires, electric shocks, hydrofluoric acid, and all kinds of accidents occur; even if you do not die, sooner or later you will be poisoned and die of cancer. The supervisor even taunted us, saying: “Do you want money or health? Choose for yourself. If you are unhappy, resign. In any case, the company will list you as permanently ineligible for rehire.” The company is full of useless old-timers who cannot find another job or move on; apart from pulling rank based on seniority, they cannot do anything. A trashy company with an American exterior and Taiwanese substance, a hundred times worse than a Taiwanese company.

Pros

Does this thing exist?

Cons

The HR person acted young on the phone but looked completely different in person, and had a poor attitude and was impatient.

For example, I wanted to confirm whether something was what the supervisor meant, but when I was told not to make it so complicated, I was treated as inexperienced. The person interviewing alongside me originally said that they should have done something related, but immediately changed their tune after hearing the supervisor and said that they probably had not.

When I went out to use the restroom, I happened to block someone who appeared to be a short, fat, balding middle-aged person, probably at supervisor level, accompanied by a female assistant. They looked very annoyed.

The office’s epidemic-prevention measures consisted merely of broadcasting reminders for employees to wipe down their own surrounding areas. They should take a look at the poorly ventilated environment—if one person gets it, everyone shares it.

If you think it is a good company just from reading the job listing, you are mistaken. Think it is an American company? In reality, it is operated as a typical Taiwanese boss-run company. Operators are paid only the minimum wage (although this includes perfect-attendance bonuses and meal and transportation subsidies; after deductions, the base salary is pitifully low). As for engineers’ salaries, based on relevant information on PTT, they are generally lower than those of comparable companies. The company skirts the lowest standards required by the Labor Standards Act in all sorts of ways—the company is apparently even greater than the government. Even for typhoon days off, you have to wait for the company’s notice on the day of the typhoon to find out whether you need to go to work. Every December, the factory closes for a period, and the company will force you to use your annual leave to offset it (if you have no annual leave left, they effectively deduct it from your salary), all so you can have a wonderfully “compassionate” Christmas.

As for the workplace environment, it is practically made up of a group of vulgar, unreasonable, gossip-mongering, status-conscious older women who love to act like veterans. Young people who go there should be careful about being ostracized, verbally mocked, or harassed.
