All the job openings posted on the job bank are fake. I applied for a full-time service crew position, and someone called to tell me the date and time of the interview. They also said it would be best to start part-time first. I said I specifically wanted a full-time position. The person said, “Okay, then come over first and let the store manager take a look at you.”

When I arrived at the store that day, there was no record of it at all. The PT asked whether the person who called back was a woman. I said yes. It felt like the PT had just answered the phone randomly and scheduled the appointment carelessly.

After I filled out the information, they said the store manager wasn’t there and that they would arrange an interview later. Me: ???

In the end, there was never any response.

Then, a few days later, I found a job and went to cancel my application for a full-time service crew position through the joint recruitment campaign for the same store. On the phone, they said, “We don’t have a joint recruitment campaign tomorrow. If you want to apply, please come to the store and fill out an application.” ???

So was the person who called to confirm after I submitted my résumé earlier a ghost? If you’re not hiring, don’t post fake job openings online and mess with people like they’re idiots.

If you want to save on labor, I suggest only hiring PT staff. While you’re at it, shrink the portions and raise the prices. No wonder Burger King beat you into the ground.

Pros

1. Divided into front-of-house and back-of-house, with individual traits assigned to suitable positions (this depends on the store; at least, that was the case at the stores where I worked).

2. At the time, I was working part-time as a student, and almost all the employees were students, so everyone got along well and it was easy to make friends.

3. If you are willing, responsible, willing to learn, and proactive, and do well with all the SOPs, the company will train and promote you (trainer, front-counter service crew, hourly shift leader).

4. The scheduling is extremely, extremely, extremely flexible!! (But it also depends on the scheduling manager. However, if you did not give them a shift and they schedule you anyway, you can raise the issue.)

5. There are almost always group chats where you can raise issues, discuss things, share your personal opinions or perspectives, or simply see what others have to say.

6. Overall, I think McDonald’s is a very suitable environment for part-time work during your student years. If you want to pursue a career in the food and beverage industry, it also looks quite good on your résumé. And if you have held a position above crew member, isn’t that even better? You will have already worked in management while you were young and learned about staff scheduling and managing the dining area during shifts.

Cons

1. The closing shift is always short-staffed. If they ask once whether you can help close, they may schedule you to help close forever afterward... (If you can’t, just refuse directly—don’t put yourself through it.)

2. Sometimes there are double standards. For example, if someone is on good terms with the shift manager, they may be allowed to smoke or slack off while the manager turns a blind eye!?

3. The men tend to be assigned most of the heavy work (being trained on oil filtering, carrying fries, deep cleaning), while the women may just wipe tables, sweep floors, or clean the windows/environmentally organize things?

4. There are far too many couples working part-time together, and this can affect many people. For example, they may not come to the store when they argue, or act spoiled and pick their preferred stations. Then the other part-timers suffer.

5. It’s best not to tell secrets to anyone you don’t trust (they’ll spread throughout the entire McDonald’s).

Pros

The night shift pays an extra NT$50 per hour.

That’s right—no doubling, just an extra fifty dollars.

Cons

Very tiring. Extremely tiring.

Every shift on the kitchen’s night shift feels like an extreme challenge.

The workload is almost twice that of employees working regular hours.

Usually, after one or two in the morning, there is only one person left in the kitchen.

If business is extremely busy, you’ll honestly feel like you’re going to die from the workload.

Also, you usually don’t have time to take the full 30-minute break.

When it’s busy, you’ll usually clock out and then continue working; you aren’t paid for this time.

I also usually arrive half an hour early to work for free, because the work simply cannot be finished otherwise.

You also have to confirm the quantities of the items in the refrigerator before the evening-shift coworkers finish work; otherwise, once everyone has left, there will be no one available to help me bring things over.

If you’re a student, working part-time one or two days a week is still manageable.

But ideally, you should work no more than four days a week; otherwise, you’ll really feel like you’re going to die from the workload.

When female employees play on their phones at work, the assistant manager pretends not to see it, but when a male employee takes his phone out, it is confiscated immediately before he can even use it. After work, it was still held for another half hour before being returned. For the night shift, from 22:00 to 02:30, pay is calculated as follows: 22:00–23:00 is paid at the regular hourly rate, and 23:00–02:30 is paid at double the night-shift rate. However, there is no overtime pay for staying late after the scheduled end time. Whether you finish at 03:30 or 04:00, it is paid at the same regular hourly rate—so where is the supposed double pay? When there is nothing else to do, employees are also required to rummage through outdoor trash bins to retrieve items customers have thrown away, and clean food-waste bins that smell unbearably foul.

Pros

Flexible scheduling, highly recommended as a side job.

Because they are so understaffed, there generally aren't issues with failing the interview or being fired.

Pay and benefits are relatively clear and transparent.

There tend to be fewer discrimination issues (including regarding body type and sexual orientation), and little angels (cleaning PTs with intellectual disabilities or other disabilities) are usually not discriminated against either.

Cons

Because they are severely understaffed, one person may be expected to do the work of three, or you may be asked to work overtime.

The average age is generally quite low, so you may easily encounter clueless teammates or immature kids with princess or prince syndrome.

Most generally lack other social experience, making it easy for small cliques to form and for people to engage in childish behavior such as attacking each other behind one another's backs.

Almost all of the staff at the store are part-time employees. Unless you truly love the job, it is not recommended as a full-time position because the income is relatively unstable (depending on your working hours), and it may also be more difficult to get approved for a credit card.

Pros

The scooter was written off after flooding along the route that delivery drivers must take, and there was no intention of helping pay for the repair costs.

They say they respect us, but when orders pile up, they fucking demand that multiple orders be delivered together if they’re along the way.

The fries go soft, and we still have to make another trip. Fuck, what’s the point of delivering them along the way?? A management team trying to take advantage of every little convenience.

You even have to check your own pay. There’s no payslip, and you still have to see whether the supervisor has “overlooked” and omitted anything.

They even say delivery drivers have the best benefits and that the store respects delivery drivers the most, but delivery drivers are always expected to rush to the front for every miscellaneous task.

The counter staff have nothing to do; a few lousy aunties just stand there chatting and flirting.

The manager and assistant-manager aunties occupy the delivery area to write reports and eat.

They open their bags and play on their phones. When they see a delivery driver needing to go in to organize deliveries, they don’t even ask them to excuse themselves.

When they see a delivery driver taking a short break there, they bitch about them having nothing to do instead of asking.

They act cocky over just a few extra dollars, hehe. I wonder how other stores are.

But 16.643316978^2 is just like this: returning employees don’t even get their previous pay grades. No wonder they get their business stolen.

Anyway, McDonald’s over there is opening so densely that it’s practically like 7-Eleven.

In short, it’s just a crappy store. The delivery equipment is as bad as it gets, the in-store equipment often breaks down too, and the people running the store are incredibly stingy.

All day, all they do is demand that things be wiped down, with certain areas managed almost like the military—wiping some tiny spots,

They only replace the main equipment. The delivery boxes are no different from garbage containers.

The store managers are completely sidelined, one replaced after another. Not a single one is capable.

Promotions depend entirely on appearance. As for where the channels are open, these rookie idiots can’t even place orders properly.

Heh heh, fuck your mother.

Cons: Low pay, low employee quality, poor promotion opportunities, promiscuity (depends on the individual), you won't learn anything particularly in-depth, and you have to choose a good location; otherwise, the manager may be terrible (some locations have managers with very weak abilities who can't teach you much).

Pros: Relatively easy work for women, flexible scheduling, suitable as a first job, an opportunity to learn communication skills, develop the ability to teach others and become a good mentor, clear and transparent pay, opportunities to slack off, subsidies, and very little deducted for labor and health insurance.

(Northern Taiwan McDonald's)

Worked in the kitchen, front of house, and closing shifts.

Restocking and filtering oil.

Have worked morning, afternoon, and evening shifts.

Feel free to ask if you have any questions.

Delivery drivers receive a NT$17 delivery allowance per order; no one knows how many trips you make. {The key point is that there is no salary scale—the salary is determined entirely at the supervisor’s discretion.}

But regardless of sun or rain, as long as there is an order, you are expected to complete it at all costs (on typhoon days, it depends on who is assigned to duty; some cold-blooded people just...)

And delivery drivers shouldn’t think the job looks easy. To put it plainly, you are basically a general errand worker: wherever you are needed, you must go, and they will absolutely never let you sit idle. Cleaning (what we call “labby”) also depends on you: cleaning the toilets, taking out mountains of garbage, helping in the kitchen, helping at the counter—company-wide deep-cleaning days also involve you.

For deliveries (using your own vehicle, with all expenses paid by yourself), you don’t even know how many thousands you’ve spent replacing brake pads and changing the oil. {The key point is that there is no salary scale—the salary is determined entirely at the supervisor’s discretion.}

The worst is when it rains and orders surge. Everyone orders delivery on rainy days, so you get busy; if the routes are nearby, they may give you two or three orders to deliver at once.

Last time, a coworker said he got soaked until even his underwear was wet. If you fall off your bike, repair it, or get a ticket, that’s all your responsibility. Working nine hours a day and earning less than NT$20,000 a month—take-home pay, at that—who would believe it?

So you are always in debt to someone.
