Pros

There are height-adjustable desks at work.

Cons

Taking leave is met with endless nitpicking. They say there are seven days of leave in the first year, which is better than the Labor Standards Act, but even taking half a day off requires questions, and taking an hour off in the morning also draws concern—a typical Taiwanese workplace style. The company is conservative and full of old-timers; it really doesn't deserve to call itself a multinational.

There is no overtime pay or compensatory time off for working overtime on weekdays. Everyone is overly accommodating: work overtime, complain about the company, and continue working overtime. Weekend overtime comes with 1:1 compensatory time off, but as mentioned above, taking leave still draws scrutiny.

Pros

Environment: The Taipei office is fairly relaxed, and colleagues get along well. The work environment is good, and the space is large.

Benefits: There are two company trips; you can choose one or attend both by paying the difference. There is also one Family Outing Day, usually to somewhere like a farm. The year-end bonus is one month’s salary, and the year-end banquet is usually a two-day, one-night event.

Cons

1. Despite being a foreign company, employees are required to clock in and out (not flexible).

2. There are many old-school Taiwanese-style practices, and the foreign company doesn’t feel very foreign.

3. Salary increases and promotions are slow; what you negotiate when joining is probably what you’ll continue to receive.

4. Traditional industries update slowly, and gradually you may fall behind the times.
