HR sent an interview invitation via 104

and asked me to schedule a brief phone interview on their website.

The strange thing is,

the scheduling webpage was completely unusable.

After notifying them via 104, my message was read but never answered.

What kind of strange company is this?

Pros

Colleagues look out for one another

Cons

HR seems completely incompetent, as if they are just collecting a paycheck while lying down... During the interview, I specifically asked about overtime. HR replied very cautiously that the situation differed from branch to branch and that, basically, there was not much overtime at any of them. After all, as HR, they should know employees’ working hours. However, they had already planned to assign me to the branch with the most serious overtime situation and highest turnover, without telling me at the time. Anyway, all I can say is that during my first two months there, I really worked overtime every day until 11 or 12 p.m., and sometimes even past 1 a.m., before leaving the branch... Of course, reporting it to HR got me nowhere~~~~ Apparently, the regional manager came to check on the working situation, but when it came to supporting the branch, at most they stayed from opening in the morning until 2 p.m. before leaving!! Hello~~ After 2 p.m. is exactly when customers gradually start coming in. What are you doing disappearing halfway through the afternoon????? Emphasizing how hardworking and outstanding you are???

I really don’t understand. Shift work at a branch mostly involves handling routine store operations and sales—everything is the same every day—so how can there still be constant overtime? Are sales really good enough to require overtime every single day???

Later, because the overtime situation was so serious, they even shifted the start time later. In the end, I still had to leave at 11 or 12 every night. Of course, with HR being so incompetent, they would never tell you in advance; either they genuinely didn’t know or they were pretending to be clueless~

The comments below are all true. Think very carefully before joining this “Japanese company”~~ The Japanese managers at headquarters really will not speak Chinese to you at all (they may be able to, but they have no intention of speaking Chinese with you), so communication is impossible. Only consider working there if your Japanese is fluent enough to argue~~

The interviewer had a very poor attitude. Even though they weren’t short-staffed, they kept pushing salaries down to boost HR’s performance metrics. Like the place downstairs, they asked you to print your résumé, but then printed it themselves. A company that wastes a lot of time.

Pros

Not much physical labor

Cons

There is not much structure. The store management is very weak. They only look at performance and ignore everything else.

Management positions are obtained through an election system. Some people with no real ability can still earn 50,000–60,000, while department heads and store managers merely rely on their seniority to throw their weight around.

The company has a strong Japanese hierarchical culture.

Optometrists do not respect sales staff.

The company likes to monitor store employees via surveillance cameras and take photos.

If you like being treated as a corporate slave, you can go there.

An incredibly ridiculous company. After going back and forth several times via 104 notifications to arrange an interview time, they even asked the applicant to print out and bring their résumé. Once everything had been arranged, they suddenly said: “The supervisor has revised the conditions for this interview, so it has been canceled.” They waste everyone’s time by failing to check things carefully before sending notifications—a company that cancels at the last minute with an excuse and is even unwilling to pay for printing a job applicant’s résumé.

Pros

The interview process was not too stressful.

Cons

There were two interviews. In the first, there was a Japanese translation and interpreting test; the second interview focused more on interpreting.

The first interview consisted mostly of the interviewer answering questions. During the second interview, the Japanese manager talked at length about the kind of talent he wanted and did not want, repeatedly emphasizing that the job would involve many miscellaneous tasks and that he did not want someone who would be overly concerned about the scope of their work.

During the interview, he also kept complaining about how bad the person who previously held this position was and how poorly that person met his requirements.

During the second interview, he repeatedly emphasized that I was not the person with the best Japanese ability among the candidates. At that point, I was filled with questions. What kind of person did he actually want? It sounded like he wanted someone with strong Japanese translation and interpreting skills, since he kept criticizing how poorly the former employee translated. Yet during the second interview, he relentlessly criticized me. He also said that I was the only person who had made it to the second interview. If he thought my abilities were insufficient, he could have invited someone else to the second interview. It left me wondering what kind of person he actually wanted.

He mentioned a date by which he would respond, but he did not get back to me within that timeframe. He repeatedly said that my answers were not what he was looking for. Since I applied for this job through a recruitment agency, he later said that, in fact, they were not planning to hire anyone for the time being. So I have to ask: Were you wasting my time? Don’t you know whether your own company needs staff? In short, I hope everyone will think carefully before going to an interview. After all, this company clearly was not urgently hiring.

Pros

They clearly explain the salary and promotion system, with a typical Japanese-company style.

Cons

It feels like they are not actually hiring, yet they still do not close their job postings on 104 and 1111.

After the interview, they said they would send an offer notification within three days and that they would email us regardless of whether we were hired. However, even after that period passed, I still did not receive any message.

There was really no need to waste time submitting a résumé to this company.

It really does not feel like they are urgently hiring.

Pros

Relaxed style, group discussion format, emphasizing that no experience is required

Cons

After the group discussion, everyone was asked to wait outside, and then the second interview was arranged directly via phone notification.

Basically, if you have no optometry experience, forget it—unless you are very good-looking, lively, and positive, with no visible flaws.

At the time, there was someone else in the same group with many years of optometry experience,

but they looked very old-fashioned, and their résumé was the kind of standardized template you can buy at a convenience store, so the manager was not interested.

Also, I don’t know why every job posting emphasizes that résumés must include a photo.

I thought that was illegal abroad?

Never mind, never mind—this is Taiwan.
