Pros

The job is not very difficult. As long as you can write English correspondence and speak English fluently, it is not hard to get started.

Cons

1. Low salary: approximately NT$25,000–28,000, but they will tell you that this is already a lot.

2. The job conditions and duties do not match the description: The job description says that overseas assignments are required, but in reality, they will not let you go abroad.

3. Heavy workload: Although the position is listed as a specialist, once you join, you will have to handle all kinds of tasks, both large and small, and you will also be assigned additional work from time to time.

4. Responsibility-based system: You must treat the secretary-general’s words as absolute orders. Whatever they ask you to do, you must follow their instructions. If you cannot finish, you are expected to work overtime, but they do not want you to report the overtime because they believe that specialists should work under a responsibility-based system.

5. No job security: If you want to join, you must start work immediately. If the secretary-general decides that they no longer need you, they may suddenly tell you to pack up your things and leave immediately.

6. Few benefits: There are no project bonuses, no bonuses for the three major holidays, no year-end bonus, and no annual company dinner. The best benefit is labor and health insurance.

Pros

1. The work is mostly routine administrative tasks, so it is easy to learn.

2. The job provides opportunities to interact with contacts from many companies and expand your professional network.

Cons

1. The salary is not high for a position that requires foreign-language expertise.

2. They tend to direct subordinates from their own perspective when handling simple tasks, making them unnecessarily complicated.

3. You must endure and accept the supervisor’s unconventional logic and follow instructions accordingly.

4. Overseas business trips look good on paper, but you do not actually get to enjoy them.

5. They will always tell you that you should be proactive and like your work, rather than expect your work to suit you.

6. They frequently send LINE messages after work or on holidays, sometimes just for minor matters.

7. Four specialists resigned from the same position within six months.

8. There is no performance bonus, so it feels like there is no room for salary growth.

9. The skills learned are not highly applicable to business practice because so much time is spent researching official documents.

10. They frequently tell subordinates that the current workload is only one-third of what the previous specialist handled.

11. They emphasize that there are many taboo expressions when communicating with seniors in the workplace. For example, you cannot say “What do you mean?”, “How is it?”, “That’s right,” or “Not bad.”
