Pros

1. Working hours are 8:30–17:30, with almost no overtime (12:00–13:30 lunch break)

2. There are many gift certificates available (Far Eastern Department Store gift certificates); the three holiday bonuses total over NT$20,000 in gift certificates

3. Annual travel subsidies are provided based on years of service (NT$3,000 for less than one year, NT$5,000 after one year, NT$10,000 after two years, NT$15,000 after three years)

4. A uniform subsidy of NT$20,000 is provided once every two years

5. The year-end banquet guarantees at least NT$5,000 in gift certificates and NT$1,000 in cash

6. Gift boxes and gifts are provided for the three major holidays

7. An additional 0.5 month’s salary is paid for the Dragon Boat Festival, and another 0.5 month’s salary for the Mid-Autumn Festival

8. Chinese New Year bonus: 4 months’ salary; mid-year (May–June) profit-sharing bonus: 3 months’ salary

9. You can receive 20 months of salary per year

Cons

1. Management is heavily personality-driven. Basically, branch managers are like local emperors who can do whatever they want (as long as performance targets are met)

2. Many business dinners and social engagements take place after work and involve drinking quite a lot of alcohol; it suits people who enjoy drinking

3. Most colleagues have more than 10 years of experience, so miscellaneous tasks naturally fall to newcomers

4. There is absolutely no training. You have to figure things out and learn on your own, and if you make a mistake, your supervisor will chew you out publicly

5. At the morning meeting, everyone has to report what they plan to do that day. If the report is not substantial enough, the supervisor will humiliate you in front of everyone (e.g., “Are you slacking off?” “Is the company’s money that easy to earn?” “Did you always slack off like this at your previous job?”)

6. The base salary is very low (the probationary salary for Mega Bank level 8)

7. Leave is provided according to the Labor Standards Act, but previous years of service are not recognized (annual leave resets to zero)

8. Salaries are frozen (after three years, the raise is less than 2%—enough for one teppanyaki meal at Toko Buki and a cup of mango pomelo sago)

9. The salary is considerably lower than at banks (you earn the equivalent of five fewer iPhone 13 Pro Max units per year)
