The workload decreased, so there was no work to rush to complete, and reasons were sought to lay people off.

The office windows face the road, exposing us to vehicle exhaust and air pollution. After two days without wiping the desks, they are covered in particulate matter—PM2.5 is harmful to health. Motorcycle parking is difficult to find, so you have to walk a long way or park illegally downstairs. When parking nearby, your vehicle is often moved, scratched, or you may receive a NT$600 illegal-parking ticket. The salary does not include labor and health insurance, making it lower than the amount advertised on job-bank websites. Perfect attendance is calculated annually. There are no bonuses, holiday gifts, lunch, commuting, or other subsidies… No salary increases. There is one meeting day each week with no lunch break. Interactions and conversations involve hierarchical pressure, like playing along with the king in a game. The air conditioning is often off, leaving you drenched in sweat. Line messages often arrive after work. You have to take over tasks others do not do. I have never encountered a company where things such as birthday celebrations or dinners are self-funded....

Pros

1. If you have enough courage, you can leave work on time.

2. Salaries are paid relatively on time.

3. They are willing to give young, attractive recent graduates opportunities, such as attending overseas trade shows and entertaining foreign guests.

Cons

1. They claim to comply with the Labor Standards Act, but in reality they underreport salaries, force or prohibit employees from taking leave, and do not pay overtime. Even former employees who applied for a labor inspection found it useless.

2. You have to endure the boss’s secondhand smoke.

3. Employee benefits are poor (vastly different from what was said during the interview): no bonuses for the three major holidays, no employee trips, a pitifully small year-end bonus, often no water to drink, no air conditioning, and being given dirty looks for discussing personal matters during work hours.

4. There is gender discrimination. Men are expected to handle all labor-related tasks, even when those tasks are outside their job responsibilities. Women face appearance-based discrimination: if you are considered below average in appearance or slightly overweight, the boss will constantly criticize you, and you will absolutely have no opportunity to attend overseas trade shows.

5. Because it is a family-run business, there are no promotion opportunities, and chances of receiving a raise are also extremely slim.

6. Regardless of your position (e.g., accounting, design, sales, etc.), you will be asked to go downstairs to the factory to help with packaging, moving, and assembly.

7. Most people do not have their own internet access and cannot browse the internet independently.
