(The Capital Hotel on Jianguo North Road) No matter how hard you work, it is useless. There is hardly any year-end bonus, and both the owner and employees say that the company did not make money?? ~ In my first year, after working for eight months, I received only a 200 opening-work red envelope; it was not even enough to cover the red envelopes given to subordinates. The owner's business strategy was indecisive: the restaurant on the second floor would open and close repeatedly. Employees never felt respected. Later, when I interviewed at other hotels, people in the industry unanimously gave the hotel on Jianguo North Road negative reviews........... The Capital Hotel's HR department is extremely unprofessional; because they could not find anyone, they transferred someone from another department to do the job~~

The HR person asked questions in a completely brainless way.

I originally applied through 104 for a front-desk position,

and received a reply saying that there was currently a sales position available,

and specifically noting that the company was willing to provide training from the ground up.

I said I was interested in learning more,

so they quickly arranged an interview.

(Oh, by the way,

HR skipped the job bank

and called me directly to schedule the interview.

Afterward, they didn't even send an email or text message.

Very unprofessional.)

On the day of the interview, HR asked:

Why did you apply for both our reservation agent and sales positions?

The problem is that I only applied for the former;

the latter was something she brought up herself.

She clearly has serious difficulty understanding written Chinese.

And when she asked why I wanted to work in hotel sales,

I briefly explained my reasons,

mentioning that I had previously considered other types of work,

such as programming, travel, finance, and so on.

TMD, her immediate response was:

I think you have so many ideas!

((in a disdainful tone

She later also said, “You know your résumé isn't impressive, right?”

This is the kind that would actually be thrown straight into the trash as soon as they saw it.

She also told me that all the salespeople here have a lot of experience

and know how to do their jobs well. You might not be able to start out in sales right away. So what the WTF was that email you sent earlier about?

Why can this HR woman be so brain-dead? :)

When I arrived for the interview, I first filled out the basic information and waited for about 25 minutes. Then an older manager, approximately 50–60 years old and with prominent protruding teeth, came in.

He looked over some basic information >

Then he asked questions such as what I could do (I had previously worked in IT-related and administrative roles).

I did not major in the relevant field at university (though I had studied it at vocational high school), and he repeatedly brought this up, saying things like I only knew the basics. He showed absolutely no respect for other people's abilities.

The main issue was my expected salary. I wrote the same salary as in my previous job. He said that the work there was different from what I had done before and involved more in-depth responsibilities: “To be honest, someone who doesn’t know anything can’t ask for such a high salary.”

I asked, “Could you tell me about the company benefits so I can adjust my salary expectations?” He said there were benefits for the three major holidays, as well as company-provided lunch and dinner.

I then asked about the year-end bonus. He said it depended on the company’s operations. I asked whether there was a basic bonus of one month’s salary or something similar.

He replied, “Young people nowadays write down salaries like this without improving their abilities. We need to teach you everything from the beginning, so you need to have a learning mindset. We also have people in our company whose salary was adjusted to over 40K. The salary you wrote is too high at 37K; we can only offer you 33K–34K. If you add the meal allowance, it’s about the same anyway.”

I said, “But the salary and benefits offered by companies elsewhere are very good.” (I could earn 45K at a foreign company elsewhere.)

(This part took approximately 15 minutes.)

The interviewer then thought it over and asked someone from the IT department to come talk with me about job-related questions. This lasted about 15 minutes.

I should mention that the IT interviewer was very polite. Even when I lacked a particular skill, they did not criticize me and simply asked questions such as whether I understood that area or had handled it before. After that, the interview ended.

Afterward, the older manager came back in and said, “Mr. X, if there is any further progress, we will contact you.”

(He did not even briefly see me out; instead, he went off to talk to someone else.)

Interview questions

Q: Can you accept being on call 24 hours a day?

A: I would still prefer to work normal hours.

Q: Have you done anything to improve your abilities?

A: No, not particularly.

Interview conclusion

I encountered an interviewer who did not respect interviewees. The kind of people a company has reflects what kind of company it is.

Everything you would expect from a family business is present: employees are treated like oxen and horses to be used, thieves to be suspected, and worn-out sandals to be discarded.

A reincarnation of Grandet, in an environment where a culture of flattery prevails. After working for two years, you are considered an extremely senior employee, while colleagues’ faces keep changing, which is quite refreshing.

The female HR staff are as described by the others above (judge the standard for yourself).

Being an imperial relative simply means doing whatever they say and letting them have their way. They think they are very talented, but in reality they are truly “斗.” Their “talent” also comes from squeezing resources out of employees.

January–March 2019: Interview for an accounting position

I did not actually go to the in-person interview. After considering the content of the three phone calls they made to me, along with relevant interview experiences shared online, I decided not to attend the interview.

I applied for an accounting position, but they asked me why I wanted to join the hotel industry. Someone else also called to ask how many Chinese characters I could type per minute and what software I used.

Maybe I really do not understand the hotel industry. I only applied because the job description they posted on the employment website matched my professional skills. I am already a senior accountant (cost accounting/general ledger); I look at the job duties, not the industry. When they asked me this question, I felt I could not answer it because I am not a server.

My résumé states that I have 10 years of administrative/accounting work experience. When you ask me how many Chinese characters I can type per minute, that is such a bizarre question that I have never seriously counted. But if I were really very slow at typing Chinese, how would I have gained my previous work experience? Wouldn’t my employers have gone crazy?

How much was your salary at your previous job?

It felt like they asked this question only to find out your absolute minimum, but at the time I answered honestly and in good faith.

They clearly found my résumé on the employment website, but instead of sending the interview invitation through the website, they sent a highly unprofessional text message by phone, completely bypassing the employment website.

They called for the first time in January to make inquiries. Some of their questions made me feel that they were very unprofessional, and others made me feel that they did not really respect job applicants.

The last call came in March, after the Lunar New Year had ended. Maybe someone had joined and then left during the intervening period? But the position had been open for two months with no contact phone number or email address at all, which made the company seem very disorganized. In addition, the company was reported in 2016 for violating the Labor Standards Act. The entire company was impossible to trust and did not seem like one I would want to stay with for five years, so I gave up on the interview directly.

Not very respectful of people

1. The interviewer was late and couldn’t be found, and didn’t provide any explanation to their subordinate.

2. Halfway through the interview, the interviewer left without saying anything and left you sitting there by yourself. It was really astonishing, and you could only stare blankly while listening to their conversation with someone else.

3. Before the interview, the expected salary had already been confirmed by phone to be within the desired range, but they still offered the low salary they wanted to offer. They kept pressuring me to disclose my salary, which was truly speechless.

4. The interview bypassed the employment-matching platform’s email, making it impossible to provide an accurate response.

When asking questions, the supervisor was extremely rude, asking a bunch of personal questions unrelated to my experience or résumé. It was very disrespectful. During the interview, they also did not proactively mention the job responsibilities, salary, or anything else, focusing only on promoting how great the company’s理念 were. Their attitude made them seem extremely frivolous.

It's okay, average, and the colleagues are easy to get along with (though I think this varies from person to person).
