Read the community guidelinesThe only advantage is that the colleagues are easygoing and pleasant to get along with.
The boss is a typical second-generation rich kid who was spoiled growing up and consequently has very little respect for others. His attitude toward work is extremely poor. He often skips the company-wide meeting the next day because of personal matters or a hangover. I say he skips it rather than takes leave because he has no understanding of respecting others or their time. He never gives advance notice, leaving everyone waiting around for half a day. Being half an hour or two hours late is normal. When he finally comes in, he acts as if it is only natural that he is the boss and urges everyone to hurry up—what are you doing?! I once heard an administrative employee complain that when working with him, you can forget about eating lunch on time, because he will call you into meetings throughout the noon and afternoon, often leaving people so hungry that they still have not eaten by evening. He has never treated employees like employees, but like slaves and servants. With his “I pay, so I’m the boss” attitude, he casually hurls profanities at employees and insults their families. His emotional control is terrible: if he hears certain keywords he does not like, he will inexplicably launch into a tirade, angrily slam the table, or throw things. You have to serve him as if he were an emperor, trembling with fear all day long. He has no background in the food and beverage industry, but he has never humbly sought advice from experienced chefs. Instead, he is always giving orders and interfering with kitchen operations—a textbook control freak. He micromanages everything, even something as small as a single drop of oil, down to a few dollars’ worth, yet he frequently changes his orders according to his mood: this week it is five dollars, next week it becomes ten dollars. The person who most often overturns the so-called standard procedures is the boss himself. Every company matter, large or small, must be photographed as “QC” for him to review. Even if a customer does not eat beef and wants to change to another dish, special instructions and approval are required. The process is cumbersome and drawn out. If the restaurant is busy during a meal period or there are not enough staff to take photos, he will loudly berate employees in the group chat and arbitrarily double their performance deductions based on his mood. What was mentioned above regarding the salary structure is all true = =. Nothing was explained during the interview. Only after you reported for work and signed the documents did they tell you that, because of the pandemic, the company was placing employees on unpaid leave. There is also a component of the salary structure called a “work bonus,” supposedly paid based on the company’s operating performance; in reality, the boss can deduct all of it whenever he feels like it. There is no reasonable standard at all. You cannot receive the full salary agreed upon in the original offer letter. The fact that they deduct wages is completely against the Labor Standards Act!
In the face of all the company’s various predicaments, it is not that the veteran employees never tried to change things. However, the boss is extremely authoritarian and overbearing and refuses to listen to genuine suggestions. Many people have chosen to leave out of disappointment. Far too many people were frightened away on their first day of work and simply did not show up the next day. This is the company with the highest employee turnover I have ever seen! At work, you constantly face the boss’s emotional blackmail and verbal bullying, while still not receiving your full salary. I urge younger colleagues to value their time and not come to a company like this to waste it!
Most of the colleagues are easy to get along with. That should probably be the only advantage.
The boss is extremely disrespectful toward employees, self-centered, and dismissive of professional expertise. They constantly threaten to demote employees, cut their pay, or tell them to get lost and leave, while repeatedly hurling profanities and insulting other people’s mothers.
The salary agreed upon with the company also contains hidden traps. Part of the salary is classified as a work bonus. It sounds nice to say that the bonus is based on your job performance, but in reality it is scored according to the boss’s personal mood. As a result, it is basically impossible to receive the salary conditions originally agreed upon. This doesn’t feel legal, does it?! Three-month probation period.
Due to the impact of the pandemic, the restaurant’s business declined sharply, and employees were forced to take unpaid leave; we couldn’t even receive the basic wage...
In short, this is a company that cannot retain talent. Everyone there wants to leave as soon as they find an opportunity. Those who have not left simply have not yet found somewhere they want to go, or lack the ability to leave.
