Pros

You can watch the children interact energetically.

Cons

1. New employees are expected to take on the job immediately after joining, often being given only some information and told to get started right away. Since internal employees are very busy and the people responsible for training keep changing, it feels a lot like they are passing the buck.

2. Basically, administrative mentors are just cleaners.

3. Don’t expect to take time off during enrollment season—the boss won’t allow it.

4. There are many unspoken rules and workplace infighting internally, so you need to have a strong heart.

5. There is a meeting every week.

6. One person is expected to do the work of three, and supervisors are in a bad mood.

Job position: Design and Planning

Working hours: Monday to Friday and Saturday (half day)

I worked there about 5–6 years ago.

* The salary was quite good, and the expected benefits and year-end party were provided.

* Director Chen (a math teacher and design director) and Director Minghua (female) treated employees very well. You would want to wholeheartedly remain working with them.

* Although the job involved graphic design and reception duties, the company provided ample time for you to work and come up with design ideas. It was not overly demanding.

Cons

Rather than calling them disadvantages, they were more like difficulties ------ you need to be able to tolerate other people's negative emotions.

Example 1)

When I had just taken over the design position, I discovered that student photos from the various branches were missing. When I called to ask about them, I was scolded: “We’ve already given them to you so many times. Why do you keep asking for them?! Can’t you designers save files properly?!” Because the previous graphic designer had left without properly handing anything over, you had to endure being berated and make several more calls to request the files until you finally got them.

Example 2)

Once, while I was at the reception desk, I received an internal call from the accountant (Director Huang’s wife). She started scolding me as soon as the call began. I tried very hard to understand what had happened, but I couldn’t grasp the point because it was all emotional language. After scolding me, she said, “Talking to you is like playing a lute to a cow. There’s no point in saying anything to you!” and hung up.

Example 3)

It was during the enrollment period, so all the teachers were very busy. During a meeting, the boss asked me in a tone that seemed intended to humiliate me: “You do design work—can you help us clean the toilets?” I replied, “Sure.” When the boss realized they could not embarrass me, they moved on to other matters.

Example 4)

One day, I noticed that a homeroom teacher I had a good relationship with had red eyes, so I went over to ask if she was okay. She said that she was resigning, and when she discussed it with the boss in a small room, the boss not only scolded her but also insulted her parents. Later, after hearing that she was going to work in Tainan, where there would be less competition within the same industry, the boss finally let her go.

Case 5)

Later, a new graphic designer joined and learned alongside me. Once, she received a phone call and began crying. When I asked her afterward what had happened, she said she had designed elegant white envelopes for the company, but the accountant kept scolding her, saying they looked like funeral envelopes and would bring bad luck to the company!

As an aside: The teachers here were all very busy. One male homeroom teacher said that he ate only one meal a day—the meal he had after work, since he was not free to eat until 10:30 p.m.

The above reflects my experience from several years ago. I do not know what the internal environment is like now.

Pros

Pays salaries on time, and you get to play and grow with the children.

Cons

Supervisors from other departments meddle in everything all day long. They pretend to be busy when there is nothing to do, but actually still have time to chat, joke around, and eat. As soon as you sit down, you get criticized mercilessly.

It is best to pretend to be busy at work. As long as a supervisor sees you sitting down, not moving around, not answering the phone, or not replying to her, she can berate you relentlessly, saying that you have a bad attitude, low efficiency, and cannot do anything right. If you tell them what your dreams are, they will even mock you all day long.

Each mentor has to be responsible for at least two or three classes. You can barely handle the matters of one class, yet you normally have to communicate with parents and write parent-contact forms every month. Each class has at least 20–70 students, so there are so many things to write that it feels endless. If you spend all day writing, you will not have time to do anything else. You have to check assignments, sign communication books, handle card-based check-ins, take class notes, manage the children’s emotions, and take full responsibility if their grades decline. You also have to be mentally prepared to be scolded by parents. If children take too many days off, the supervisor will scold you too. If you want to tutor students, you have to come up with many reasons to persuade the supervisor to approve overtime tutoring; otherwise, you can only watch helplessly as students’ grades decline and they drop out, after which the boss or supervisor will berate you mercilessly again. Basically, meetings are only opportunities to get scolded. They ask random questions about anything and everything, and if you cannot answer, you get scolded again.

All they think about is recruiting more students, without taking care of quality. If a trial student or an existing student does not pay, you had better be prepared to get scolded. These are clearly the responsibility of the telemarketing team, yet teachers are made to handle these miscellaneous tasks. Basically, going to work every day is painful. You never know what mistake you will be blamed for, or which teacher will suddenly be absent, leaving you to hold the entire class together.

If a supervisor sees you leaving after work, they will make sarcastic remarks such as, “Oh~ leaving already?”

The schedule will not be changed no matter what, and no overtime pay will be provided. Am I staying behind to volunteer?

The supervisors spend all day occupying their positions without doing their jobs. They only pretend to be busy when the boss is around; otherwise, they just fiddle around here and there, pretending to have something to do while actually looking for something to use against you.

Although it feels like a large cram school, its internal systems are still inadequate, and one person has to take on several different jobs. That would be bad enough, but if you are responsible for upper-grade students, you have to stay until around 11 p.m., get home at midnight, and have no holidays because you are expected to endure the hardships together with the upper-grade students!

This line of work requires the attitude of an indestructible cockroach, inexhaustible enthusiasm, and a silver tongue capable of dealing with supervisors. You also have to be very good at slacking off, so you can thrive in this industry.

The pay is low and the hours are long. There is no overtime pay; the boss only tells you that the extra hours can be exchanged for leave. However, there is basically no time to take leave during normal periods, and people do not even dare to ask for time off. Also, August 1–7 every year is the mandatory holiday known as the Baibo Week. Those seven days are deducted from the extra hours accumulated during regular work. If you do not have enough extra hours, they may deduct perfect-attendance leave or annual leave instead—I am not entirely sure. Basically, everyone working there has accumulated overtime hours. Before midterms, there is a two-week “intensive training week” period. During those 14 days, plus the two or three days before the exams finish, you are required to work every day. Now, because of the one fixed day off per week policy, they apparently say that one day off must be given during that period.

Each branch has a director. I heard that at the branch near Ruifeng Night Market, tutors come and go in waves, and the employees cannot be retained. However, the boss has never tried to solve this problem. Everyone knows that the person in charge of that branch is a major factor, but it is somewhat like having unchecked power. The boss often hears only one-sided accounts of many matters through the branch manager, or perhaps the boss knows about the problems but has no choice but to tolerate the branch manager because no newcomers have been trained. More accurately, the person in charge of that branch does not want to train newcomers. New employees receive no instruction at all, and then get scolded if they do not perform well. Their attitude is extremely poor; the students do not particularly like them, but they are very good at winning over the parents!

Also, all the branches seem to be very gossipy. They like calling other branches to complain and talk about things. If work is not finished, you have to stay late and work overtime, so people who work quickly mysteriously end up being given many more tasks! Some people are insanely busy while others can call every day to gossip and complain—it is really strange. There are also many completely unfounded rumors going around for no apparent reason. Even the reasons why each person leaves have two or three different versions. It is so strange.

The boss also likes people who are obedient! Once he gives an instruction, regardless of whether it is right or feasible, even if you think it is useless or that the boss does not understand, you should not question it—just do it. Many people have survived there this way. Once, there was a certain set of statistical data that we all thought was pointless to compile, but another teacher said, “It’s fine, just do it—make a rough version. The boss just wants to see it.” We were all stunned, but that teacher was highly trusted by the boss.

The above is all based on my own experience working there. Some parts may be somewhat subjective, but my feelings were very strong, and many of these things really are the way they are. If you are looking for good待遇 or to be valued, you should absolutely think twice. Then again, perhaps this is simply how the cram-school industry works—it is up to each individual to decide~

The boss is extremely stingy. The supervisors make the people under them take responsibility for everything, especially at the Fushan branch. The full-time staff change constantly. They hold some damn forum and ask parents to pay 88,800. It’s really just great. Don’t expect any benefits at all.
