I recently had the “honor” of participating in an on-site temporary support job that described itself as having “zero barriers to entry” and being open to “anyone of normal intelligence.” What appeared to be a simple task involving nothing more than physical exertion turned out to be a social experiment testing the limits of human morality and mental resilience. Just as advertised: no experience required, no skills required—only the ability to abandon any expectation of professionalism or dignity.

Let’s start with management, whose style was a masterpiece of contrasting aesthetics. One supervisor was so friendly that it raised goosebumps, enthusiastically using their authority to review resumes to initiate “casual gossip,” as if temporary workers were new matches on a dating app and the workplace had become a “professional social night market.” Perhaps they genuinely believe that the essence of management is to fully explore other people’s private affairs. Another supervisor took a minimalist approach, remaining silent throughout as though they were merely an extra showing up to clock in—their philosophy of “silence speaks louder than words” inspired reluctant admiration for their ability to reduce their “presence” to a negative value.

As for payroll, that was the dramatic climax. The original promise of payment on the “tenth day after the event ended” gave everyone hope, only for the company to make a “surprise announcement” on the final day: the company was going abroad to have fun—oh, no, it was a “business trip,” so payment might be delayed by half a month. The moment someone said, “Please be understanding,” the scene was filled with emotion—after all, we weren’t there to work; we were participating in an endurance race against fate.

The truly moving highlight came on payday. Although payment was ultimately made on schedule, some people discovered that the amount had subtly been “discounted.” When you finally gathered the courage to ask, the supervisor’s response was worthy of an emoji reaction-image exhibition: “facepalm,” “laughing and crying,” and “speechless,” all in rapid succession, as though we weren’t asking about our wages but performing an improvised skit in a chatroom. The scene prompts a profound question: has the modern workplace stopped valuing language and shifted toward a new paradigm of emotion management centered on emojis?

If you are conducting some kind of social observation or psychological research, I sincerely recommend this absurd farce to the following audiences:

1. Graduate students in sociology preparing to write *How Small Organizations Successfully Simulate Disaster Scenes*

2. Psychologists particularly interested in “how inefficient organizations feel good about themselves”

3. Dream-chasing young people hoping to rediscover what “self-numbing” means through workplace experience

To sum up this experience: the question was never how hard you worked, but whether you had a thick enough skin and strong enough nerves to withstand organizations that treat chaos as everyday life and perfunctory behavior as a style. This was not a job, but an immersive performance of social reality. Perfect? Hardly. But absurd? Truly priceless.

Pros

None, no matter how I think about it.

Cons

1. Severe workplace politics.

2. A workplace full of emotional manipulation.

3. Overtime is the norm. Even if you finish your own work and leave early, you may still be emotionally manipulated.

4. If you want to maintain your physical and mental well-being, this is not a suitable place for you. Cherish your life.

5. The perfect-attendance bonus makes up too much of the salary. Taking even one day off will significantly reduce your pay. Although they say it is meant to encourage employees, it feels very much like being tied down.

Pros

Cons

1. During the Chinese New Year period, the company claims to be giving employees an early holiday, but requires them to use their own annual leave to cover the days off.

2. Work efficiency is poor. Everything has to wait for senior management to review before it can be sent out. Sometimes, after waiting a whole day, the quotation still cannot be sent to the client.

3. Everything depends entirely on senior management’s mood. When they are in a good mood, anything goes; when they are in a bad mood, company rules can change three times in a week, often leaving people at a loss.

4. Senior management are control freaks and lack trust in their employees.

Cons

Not very respectful toward interviewees

The interview was scheduled during a busy period when they had another company coming in to perform maintenance on their equipment

As a result, they were very rushed when dealing with the interviewee

1. The first interview was a computer-based test.

Basically, you could leave after finishing it, because the person interviewing you was from administration.

2. There were also two more interviews, but beforehand they never explained what this interview was for.

Only after everything else was taken care of did they say that today was just for taking a test.

3. During the first interview, they had an administrative employee look at the portfolio, but this person was neither a decision-maker nor a design professional.

It was unclear how they were supposed to evaluate it.

4. When you arrive at the company for the interview, they first ask you to take a written test and then a computer-based test. However, you will find that you only have a rough understanding of the job responsibilities, because the person interviewing you is not someone who does the work you would be doing.

Overall, the interview experience felt extremely absurd, especially since they were the ones who invited me to interview.

In short, if you want a perfect interview experience, I recommend not going.

Furthermore, judging from the interview, the company's planning does not inspire much confidence in what life would be like after joining.
