Pros

The colleagues are all very nice.

Cons

Management requires teachers not to teach elsewhere and not to contact others privately outside the cram school. During working hours, teachers’ phones must be collectively managed by someone else—in short, it restricts personal freedom.

Pros

It lets recent graduates understand the darker side of society, learn the tactics companies commonly use, how to exploit loopholes in the law, and how to be silent in the workplace.

However, most of my coworkers are kind and intelligent, so it is easy to get along with them. Also, because the teachers have different areas of expertise, you can learn different things from each of them.

Cons

First, please pay attention to the contents of the contract. During the interview and when signing the contract, do not give up or concede on the rights you are entitled to.

The drawbacks can be divided into five aspects: the company’s operations, the boss, the boss’s wife, the administrative director (I think that was the title, or something like chief operating officer) (the boss’s wife’s older sister), and the subtle rules:

1. Company operations:

There is no long-term or short-term planning, and the company violates a little bit of all kinds of laws (which makes it difficult to deal with). Most employees are treated as disposable. A small number have been there longer and know too many of the company’s major problems and vulnerabilities, so the company is wary of them. The three people at the top give different explanations of the same instructions. Even the same person gives different orders and guidance about the same matter in different circumstances, but according to them, it is always because the employee did not explain clearly, did not fully absorb the information, or did not take notes and sign to confirm it. The communication among the people at the top may not be ideal, so you may receive different instructions from different superiors for the same task.

2. The boss:

He believes that teachers’ status and importance are far greater than those of any other position, but he frequently interrupts teachers’ classes, runs back and forth between classrooms while classes are in progress, disturbs the lessons of teachers and students, and suddenly calls employees away. He may even directly tell a teacher to stop teaching during class and teach the class himself.

3. The boss’s wife:

As long as you complete the work assigned by the boss’s wife, there generally will not be any problems. She is also the person most receptive to suggestions, and she often makes afternoon tea and dinner for the teachers. However, there are certain things she particularly cares about, so be careful not to step on those landmines. Ideally, on your first day, discreetly ask the teachers to explain them to you.

4. Administrative director:

She is the boss’s wife’s older sister. It is best not to report anything to her, despite her saying that you can bring matters to her attention; whatever she says, just smile and say yes. If the details of something she assigns are different every time, accept it: do exactly what she says. If what an employee eventually does differs from what she had in mind, it is always because the employee did not understand, lacked a sense of responsibility, or could not keep up with the company. Being called away by the boss, the boss’s wife, or her too frequently in the middle of work is supposedly because employees do not understand how to prioritize. Supposedly, the boss and his wife have too many matters and cannot distinguish their importance, issuing orders without prioritizing them, so employees should ask her first—but if you actually ask, you will be criticized for not knowing how to handle things or not understanding their importance.

Do not tell her that the versions of her instructions are different every time; there will be trouble.

Subtle rules:

Employees are constantly reminded that the workplace has cameras recording video and audio, and are repeatedly reminded to hand over their phones. Employees are forbidden from having any private communication with one another. If employees are seen in the same restaurant during lunch or dinner, or even sitting together, they may be called in for questioning. If you stay at the company during unpaid meal or rest periods, you may be asked to work, but you still have to complete the scheduled hours before you can leave. Being called in to work does not count as starting work early. The flexible working hours provided for under the Labor Standards Act exist here, but it is unclear whether they are the same or whether they can actually be used.

Pros

You can design your own teaching materials

Cons

When the boss decides that you are no longer useful, they will tell all the teachers face-to-face who is going to be fired.

They pressure employees into signing unwritten contracts to control their pay, so overtime pay is effectively nonexistent.

They are inhumane, wasting the lives of the people who work for this cram school and kicking them out once they have been used.

They have absolutely no regard for the basic principles of interpersonal interaction.

Labor and health insurance are always insured based on the basic salary, and the boss also sexually harasses female employees.
