Pros

Four days off per month and a monthly salary of less than 20K. They don’t dare give employees their pay slips; if you want to take a photo, they have to prepare a separate copy. Overtime is routine, yet the overtime pay is pitifully low, and no one knows how it is calculated.

The factory environment is extremely poor. The person who irons clothes smokes, and when cigarette butts burn holes in the clothes, it is the administrative staff who have to face the scolding. They say smoking is prohibited on the premises, but he simply refuses to listen. The boss’s wife is afraid of offending him, so nothing has improved.

Putting up with secondhand smoke every day is bad enough, but the boss also brings his two daughters to the factory. The way he has raised them means they treat employees like servants and are extremely rude.

Pros

Can air conditioning count as a benefit?

Cons

1. During the interview, they claimed that labor insurance and national health insurance were provided, but after resigning, I discovered that there was no labor or health insurance during the probationary period. Anyone with common sense knows that enrollment should be reported on the first day of work. When I asked for an explanation, I was even threatened.

2. The salary calculations were completely opaque. Employees were required to use the computer clock-in records as the basis for recording their working hours, but when I requested the records after resigning, none were provided. Based on the calculations, working eight hours a day, including overtime, came to less than 1,000 per day—far below the average wage at the time.

3. Working on national holidays came with neither overtime pay nor compensatory leave.

They completely ignored even the most basic provisions of the Labor Standards Act. Just thinking about it makes me sick.

Pros

If you work more than 1,900 hours, there is a NT$100 meal allowance for missed meals. When traveling for work and staying overnight, there is a NT$300 allowance. However, the accommodations are not very good—either cheap lodgings or employee dormitories in small cubicles inside a laundromat in Linkou.

Cons

In addition to repairing and installing machines, you also have to do plumbing and electrical work. There are no benefits for the Mid-Autumn Festival or Dragon Boat Festival (it depends on the boss’s mood), the year-end bonus is less than one month’s salary, and you have to take turns working Saturdays. Senior employees will pressure you into taking the distant repair trips.
