Pros

The lunch provided during the day is okay.

The overtime pay is okay.

Cons

1. The queen is in charge. All women are expected to be very deferential to her. Whatever she asks you, don’t tell her the truth—it’s very easy to fall into her traps.

The best answer is simply that you are capable of doing the job; otherwise, you won’t know how you’ll be slandered the next second.

2. The base salary is not high, basically NT$22,000. Everything else is made up through overtime.

When you first join, no matter how you ask, they won’t tell you. They brush you off by saying things like it depends on your performance or that the deputy general manager will decide.

You only find out when you receive your salary. It is paid in cash, and you are asked to arrive early on the sixth of every month because many people have to collect their pay, which is counted and signed for on-site.

3. It is physically demanding work. If you are assigned to Building A, congratulations: it is the position everyone wants—the only job on-site where you can enjoy air conditioning all day.

If you are assigned to Building C, think carefully. It is exhausting, and you can easily be scolded until you question your life choices, especially because overtime is routine.

At first, they said the day shift was 08:00–17:00 and the night shift was 17:00–01:00. Since overtime required an additional two hours, I thought the latest would be 17:00–03:00.

The actual schedule was day shift 08:00–19:30 (a boxed dinner is provided, plus a half-hour break) and night shift 19:30–06:00. The night shift became extremely exhausting.

It was effectively a 12-hour system, giving the feeling that you were selling your health and physical labor without earning much money.

4. You need to be highly stress-resistant. You have to proactively figure out what needs to be done later or what should be done now.

(1) Experienced workers can pat themselves on the backside and wander off, claiming they are checking the hanging and placement positions, while new workers get lectured for going to the restroom instead of helping.

(2) You are expected to participate even when you do not understand. Even if you cannot understand the board-related issue, when a group gathers around to discuss it, remember to put down whatever work you are doing and join them, so people feel that you are actively participating and you do not become a target.

Otherwise, some people like to question you, needle you, and humiliate you—for example, like a company commander yelling at a squad leader, and the squad leader yelling at the soldiers.

From group leaders and other senior team members down to foreign workers, they may use profanities to disparage you.

They may insult you from the beginning to the end of your shift, or for three consecutive days, until they have had their fill or give up on you.

5. New workers have to be able to do many different tasks. The most common rationale is that new workers have no skills to contribute on the production line, so they are casually reassigned to other areas.

You provide temporary support, ranging from cleaning and organizing the office to helping other production lines, mopping on rainy days, or helping vendors move things.

That can take up an entire afternoon.
