The employees have a very poor attitude.

The interview with the hiring manager went well.

The person who notified me of the interview results and onboarding process had an extremely condescending and impolite tone when informing me that I had been accepted.

Looking at this company from the perspective of an employee at the head office, it is actually quite good. The pay is higher than elsewhere, and there is a salary adjustment every year, with fairly substantial increases (based on what I have heard, even publicly listed companies and foreign companies around me do not offer increases this large). The work itself is not particularly difficult either. It feels like a company where the longer you stay, the higher your salary becomes (perhaps because of Japanese corporate culture?). The atmosphere among colleagues is good, and the organization is fairly flat, with managers who are not overly formal or intimidating. Some departments hold meetings, but there are almost no meetings that feel like a waste of time. There is not the overtime culture I imagined; most people leave work on time, and the average age of employees is quite young.

The company's way of doing things is very outdated. The paper-based processes that cannot be eliminated result in a heavy workload. Also, most internal employees speak Japanese, but their level of professionalism is relatively low. So, if you are highly specialized in a particular area, you may either be given significant responsibility here—or find yourself wanting to bang your head against the wall. In addition, Japanese people tend to be more conservative and dislike change, so you should be mentally prepared for that.

At the joint interview organized by the government, the starting salary advertised that day for the management trainee position was 35,100. I passed the first-stage interview, and two days later I was notified that I had to take an intelligence test. At that point, I happened to check 104 and 1111 and found that the starting salaries for the same management trainee position were NT$31,000 and NT$30,000, respectively. No one knows where the difference went (fortunately, I captured it and am showing everyone). If you want to apply to this company, you have to win the selection. Of course, after passing the second-stage interview, there is still a third stage, in which a Japanese interviewer interviews you. You don't know how much of your time will be spent on interviews throughout this process, so you really need to think it through carefully.

There are way too many!

1. When delivering food, you're required to carry the trays while jogging lightly… it's really dangerous!! And you have to carry two trays at once.

It made me feel like I was running a marathon all day at work.

2. If you stop briefly to think about something, you get told off.

3. You even have to hide to drink water, as if drinking water were some terrible offense.

4. The time between shifts is extremely short!!! And if you go out to buy something, you have to change out of your uniform, including your shoes!! You can't even wear them underneath!! Changing uniforms wastes a huge portion of your time between shifts.

5. The store manager wasn't there in person on my first day, and no one taught me anything. Yet on the very first day, I was expected to know everything in both the front and back of house…

The store manager was also completely inexperienced, with less than a year of work experience, and had no idea how to train people.

On the second day, I was left on my own, and they were impatient even when I asked a question.

6. Full-time employees surprisingly don't even get staff meals...

7. The only time you can catch your breath at work is when you go to the restroom. That's it!! Really.

8. That mobile ordering system is unbelievably damn difficult to use.

9. When I first applied, I had to wait a week just for the interview. Then I went to the head office for a brief new-hire orientation and to try on the uniform.

Then, because the hospital for the required medical examination was closed for the Lunar New Year, I had to wait again. After that, they said I had to wait for the work schedule. Just waiting for the interview and medical examination wasted nearly a month of my time.

10. And the shoes they gave me were used... worn by someone else.

The day shift pays $7 more than the base wage of 133, the night shift pays 190/hour, and free employee uniforms are provided.

1. The employee break room is unbelievably small—how are three people supposed to fit into a half-ping break room?

2. Staff are assigned to teach you the job only during your first three shifts. After those three shifts, you are expected to know both front- and back-of-house duties and are scheduled as regular staff.

3. The supervisor said I had to go to the main store to fill out a resignation form. I was still hospitalized due to illness and replied, “I’ll go fill out the resignation form as soon as I’m discharged.” The supervisor said, “Head office wants you to go fill out the resignation form tomorrow.” I was still in the hospital—how was I supposed to go write my resignation tomorrow?

The salary isn’t much higher than elsewhere, but the demands are more than 10 times greater. If you’re hoping for a raise, you’d better not consider this company. Also, there’s no such thing as a break room here—don’t get your hopes up.

Honestly, in my eyes, this company is simply one that pays NT$140 per hour and offers no other benefits. During the interview, they said there would be an evaluation after three months, and the information above also said that Japanese-language learning would be provided. However, after being here for nine months, there has not been a single evaluation, nor have any Japanese classes been offered—there has been no news at all. We are busy taking care of customers all day, and there is not even the most basic birthday bonus. I see full-time employees having to calculate a whole bunch of things during their breaks, as well as write reports; by the time they finish, it is almost time to start work again. On top of that, the current staffing for shifts is simply insufficient, yet they keep opening new stores and forcibly transferring staff there, leaving the original stores understaffed. Then they still demand that we write reports reviewing the situation. Honestly, the workload at this company is already greater than what the hourly wage warrants. Honestly, it is! Abso­lutely! Ridiculous!

And all they do all day is look at the data. They have no idea what is really happening in the stores and only exploit the workers below them!!

The break room is unbelievably tiny

Have you ever imagined what it feels like for 3–4 people to take a break in a break room measuring less than one ping?

Central kitchen worker: The starting salary is not high, but there is a meal allowance and a perfect-attendance bonus. Positions are divided into employee, full-time, and part-time. The difference between employee and full-time positions is that employees receive a position allowance and an annual bonus, while full-time employees do not. The work itself is fairly simple, or even monotonous; it feels like anyone could do it, and it does not require much specialized expertise. You have to stand for long periods, and speed is required on the job.
