They want you to come in for an interview, but require you to call them back? Does this even count as a benefit??? Saving the company money?!
The Far Eastern Group's related social controversies are mostly connected to former chairman Chao Teng-hsiung's involvement in a series of corruption, bribery, breach-of-trust, and asset-stripping cases concerning the Affordable Housing project and the Taipei Dome. These cases involved illegally changing land-use designations, bribing officials, and nominee transactions. Chao Teng-hsiung was sentenced to seven years in the first trial and is still involved in litigation. The cases have sparked controversy over conglomerates allegedly “using money to grease the wheels.”
The following are major social cases and controversies involving Far Eastern in recent years:
Taoyuan Affordable Housing bribery case (2014): Chao Teng-hsiung was suspected of bribing Yeh Shih-wen, then deputy county magistrate of Taoyuan County, in exchange for the right to undertake the Bade Affordable Housing project. This marked the beginning of the series of corruption scandals.
Taipei Dome scandal and series of bribery cases (2017): Prosecutors discovered that Far Eastern was involved in the Taipei Dome and New Taipei City land development projects, including the former Haishan Coal Mine site and Xinzhuang Xinya Electrical Appliance site. Chao Teng-hsiung was accused of bribing officials and councilors, such as Chou Sheng-kao, to facilitate the projects, and was also suspected of stripping assets from Far Eastern Life Insurance. He was initially sought to be sentenced to 24 years and was later released on bail set at the exceptionally high amount of NT$550 million.
Far Eastern Life Insurance asset-stripping case and transaction controversies: Investigations by prosecutors and the Investigation Bureau found that commissions from Far Eastern's real estate transactions were allegedly funneled back into the Chao family's accounts, in suspected violation of the Securities and Exchange Act and the Insurance Act, as well as involving the stripping of assets from Far Eastern Life Insurance.
Illegal occupation of state-owned forest land case: The Far Eastern Culture and Education Foundation was accused of illegally turning the state-owned protected forest land in Miaoli that it had adopted into a private family cemetery called “Tianshui Garden.”
Taipei Dome private-box controversy (2024): As a public infrastructure project, the Taipei Dome was revealed to be the subject of Far Eastern's attempt to turn a large number of VIP boxes into a “private reception venue” without reasonably accommodating the Taipei City Government's event needs, sparking public discussion about the public-interest nature of the BOT project.
