For a traditional, bureaucratic-style company, working in the IT department may be relatively more comfortable than in other departments. If there is nothing to do at noon, you can take a lunch break half an hour longer than the departments downstairs. There is no overtime pay system, only compensatory leave, so you can avoid working overtime.

Nearly all members of certain groups in the IT department are women, and they tend to recruit people with little experience from career-transition programs who are obedient and easy to control. The managers of certain groups themselves lack management and communication skills, so they prefer people who are “easy to communicate with,” good at maintaining appearances and creating a team atmosphere. At first, this can create the illusion that they are generous and respectful, and they emphasize that the company’s organizational structure is flat and free of hierarchy. In reality, senior employees have a strong sense of entitlement. If you do not meet the other party’s implicit expectations, there is a high likelihood that they will pressure and marginalize you in the name of company policies and management.

The company’s upper management only puts on a superficial show when it comes to responsibility. For example, the HR department handles certain disputes passively—I won’t even mention bullying incidents—so there is nowhere to turn for help.

If you are confident that you will not be psychologically manipulated and can tolerate acting cheerful as excess staff, you should be able to get by reasonably well. But if you want to learn anything, don’t expect much. People with technical abilities are not what this place—or at least not certain groups—are looking for.
