Before the Lunar New Year, the senior manager specially prepared an elaborate presentation and called everyone to a meeting. They spent one or two hours explaining the development process. The main point was that project timelines needed to be estimated accurately. They would rather give us one or two days to properly understand the requirements and estimate the timeline than let the project be delayed.

After the Lunar New Year, I estimated a timeline once according to this approach. I was unexpectedly summoned to a meeting room by the senior manager, along with the junior manager and HR. The senior manager angrily said: “You need a whole day just to estimate a timeline? Something as simple as estimating a timeline takes you a day?”

I replied: “Last month, before the Lunar New Year, you held a meeting yourself and told us to estimate timelines accurately, and to take one or two days to do so. Now you’re angrily questioning us for taking a day to estimate a timeline? Why don’t you go look at the PPT you made yourself last month?”

The senior manager continued angrily insisting that they had never said that, going around in circles endlessly. Is it really that difficult to look at the PPT they wrote themselves? It’s only been a month—how bad does their memory have to be?”
