Pros

Freedom—what is called an American-style culture—but there is too much freedom, so to put it bluntly, it is an anarchic state. The company is full of employees who lack self-discipline, constantly passing off work and responsibility. The rights and responsibilities for departmental and individual work are unclear, but the company’s management is powerless and can only ask the departments and employees who get things done to be understanding and help one another. In other words, if you want work to proceed smoothly and stay on schedule, you have to resign yourself to picking up the work and monitoring other departments to make sure they do what they are supposed to do—their “own responsibilities.” If no one keeps an eye on them, they slack off and work slowly. The extremely low efficiency and passive attitude are very difficult to accept. Given this kind of work environment and operating model, poor efficiency and poor yield are entirely predictable.

Cons

Senior management periodically makes sweeping changes. Whenever a senior manager is replaced, the management approach changes, but no matter how many are replaced, they still cannot deal with employees who lack self-discipline. As a result, the employees who suffer are those who have not been with the company long enough, because they have not yet learned how to pass work off to others.

The company’s operating situation is poor, so it does not hesitate to lay people off. I was notified of my layoff just before the end of the workday, leaving me less than three hours to pack up my belongings and hand over my work. The next day, I was told not to come in anymore. Even though I still had half of my bereavement leave unused, they showed no consideration. During the layoff interview, I mentioned that I had not finished taking my bereavement leave. Senior management replied that they would look into it, but a few days later, I was told that because I had not used all of it myself, there would be no compensation. May I ask how I was supposed to take the leave when I was told not to come in the next day? Of course, I know this was not illegal, but the handling was crude, leaving a very poor impression and making me feel deeply disheartened. I had not taken the leave consecutively in the first place because I needed to work, and the company made me feel like a fool. The company could at least have notified me a few days earlier so I could finish taking my bereavement leave, instead of using this method to take away my legally entitled paid leave. I photographed and kept records of all my leave forms, and both sides made audio recordings during the layoff interview. These can all prove that I was not lying—there is absolutely nothing false in what I said.
