Alas, alas! The sorrow comes, the sorrow comes! Master, you have wine, so do not pour it yet; listen to me sing a song of sorrow.
When sorrow comes, I neither sing nor laugh; no one under heaven knows my heart.
You have several dǒu of wine; I have a three-foot qin.
When the qin sounds and the wine brings joy, the two complement each other; a single cup is worth no less than a thousand jūn of gold.
Alas, alas! The sorrow comes, the sorrow comes! Though Heaven is long-lasting and Earth enduring, a hall filled with gold and jade cannot be kept forever.
How many years can wealth and honor last? In life and death, everyone must face the same passage.
Wei Xu moves, and his Heavenly Eye sees through all; his brush-tip slays all the rabbits of Zhongshan.
A lone gibbon sits and cries beneath the moon over the grave; for now, let us drain this cup of wine.
Alas, alas! The phoenix does not come, and the Yellow River produces no chart; Weizi departed, while Jizi became a slave.
The Han Emperor did not remember General Li; the King of Chu cast away the Grand Master Qu.
Alas, alas! Li Si of the Qin court repented too late; empty fame is cast beyond the self.
Fanzi—did he ever truly love the Five Lakes? Once success and fame were achieved, he withdrew from the world.
The Nine Doubtful Mountains stretch on, all resembling one another; Wei Xu moves, and his Heavenly Eye sees through all.
A sword is the weapon of one man; a book can make one’s name known.
Huishi would not serve the lord of ten thousand chariots; Bu Shi was not necessarily poor in his mastery of a single classic.
You must still attain the rank of regional commander while your hair is black; do not foolishly grow old as a Confucian scholar.
The Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, while practicing the profound Prajñāpāramitā, clearly saw that the five aggregates are all empty and crossed beyond every suffering and difficulty.
Śāriputra! Form is not different from emptiness; emptiness is not different from form. Form itself is emptiness; emptiness itself is form. Feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness are also like this.
Śāriputra! All phenomena are marked by emptiness: they are neither born nor destroyed, neither defiled nor pure, neither increasing nor decreasing.
Therefore, in emptiness there is no form, no feeling, perception, formation, or consciousness; no eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, or mind; no form, sound, smell, taste, touch, or phenomena;
no eye-realm, and so on up to no mind-consciousness realm; no ignorance, and also no ending of ignorance, and so on up to no aging and death, and also no ending of aging and death;
no suffering, origin, cessation, or path; no wisdom and no attainment. Because there is nothing to attain, the Bodhisattva.
Relying on Prajñāpāramitā, the mind is without hindrance. Because there is no hindrance, there is no fear; far removed from deluded and inverted dreams, one ultimately reaches nirvana.
All Buddhas of the three times, relying on Prajñāpāramitā, attain unsurpassed, complete, perfect enlightenment.
Therefore know: Prajñāpāramitā is the great spiritual mantra, the mantra of great illumination, the unsurpassed mantra,
the mantra beyond compare, capable of removing all suffering, true and not false.
Therefore the mantra of Prajñāpāramitā is spoken, as follows:
Gate gate, pāragate, pārasaṃgate, bodhi svāhā.
