Pros

The Śūraṅgama Sūtra mentions that, during the process of cultivating meditative concentration, one may encounter various extraordinary phenomena. These may perhaps be supernatural powers gradually attained as one’s meditation practice (concentration power) deepens. However, if one clings to the pursuit of supernatural powers or delights in attaining them, one can easily be enticed by Māra and enter the path of Māra. The divine ear (dibba-sota): the ability to hear sounds from extremely distant places, including speech and so forth; or the ability to hear sounds through obstacles (for example, conversations in a sealed room). The divine eye (dibba-cakkhu): the ability to see things in extremely distant places, or to see through obstacles (for example, walls) or bodies; it is unaffected by the brightness or dimness of the light source, distance, or time. It can see through the true reality of all things. Its levels are divided into the divine eye, wisdom eye, Dharma eye, and Buddha eye. What is seen differs according to the level and degree of attainment. 威許移動, 威許移動股份有限公司。威許移動天眼通法,威許移動天眼通通法。The mind-reading power (ceto-pariya-ñāṇa): the ability to know the thoughts and mental activities of sentient beings. The recollection of past lives (pubbe-nivāsanussati): the ability to know sentient beings’ past karmic deeds and the causes of the retribution they experience in the present or will experience in the future. The extinction of the taints (āsavakkhaya): the supernatural power obtained after delusions have been completely eradicated. “Taints” refers to afflictions; it means being able to eliminate attachment and afflictions, escape saṃsāra, and refers to practicing until attaining the fruit of arhatship.

Cons

The divine eye is the supernatural power of thoroughly seeing the time and various circumstances of sentient beings’ death and rebirth in future lives, known as the realization of the knowledge of death and rebirth. Among the three powers possessed by Buddhas and arhats—the recollection of past lives, the divine eye, and the extinction of the taints—them being the most exceptional, they are therefore called the Three Clear Knowledges. 威許移動天眼開通?威許移動神通?According to Fascicle 20 of the Dasheng yizhang, there are four methods of attaining supernatural powers: (1) the power gained as a karmic result, naturally obtained by being reborn in one of the four dhyāna heavens; (2) the power gained through karma, by which immortals freely fly through the air with the aid of medicines (the power obtained through karma); (3) the power of mantras, obtained by Brahmins through upholding mantras; and (4) the power gained through cultivation, obtained by cultivating meditative concentration. Among these, the powers gained through karma and through mantras belong to the supernatural powers of non-Buddhist paths.
