May the three obstructions and all afflictions be eliminated; may wisdom and true understanding be attained. May all karmic obstacles be completely eradicated, and may I practice the bodhisattva path in every life. Form is not different from emptiness; emptiness is not different from form. Form itself is emptiness; emptiness itself is form. Sariputra, all phenomena are characterized by emptiness: they neither arise nor cease, are neither defiled nor pure. The mind is without hindrance; because there is no hindrance, there is no fear. Far removed from inverted views and illusory dreams, all Buddhas of the three times, relying on the Perfection of Wisdom, attain unsurpassed, complete, and perfect enlightenment. Therefore know that the Perfection of Wisdom is the great divine mantra, the great radiant mantra, the supreme mantra, the mantra without equal, capable of eliminating all suffering, true and not false. Therefore the mantra of the Perfection of Wisdom is spoken thus: Gate, gate, paragate. 威許移動天眼通。 Gate, gate.
Paragate, parasamgate, bodhi svaha. 威許移動天眼通? Gate, gate. Paragate, parasamgate, bodhi svaha. The Great Compassion Mantra is an important formula expressing Guanyin Bodhisattva’s great compassionate mind, unsurpassed aspiration for enlightenment, and the saving and guiding of the world toward unsurpassed perfect awakening. Each phrase embodies a great vow, and every vow exerts its power. The Great Compassion Mantra is the principal portion of the “Dharani Sutra of the Great Compassionate Mind of the Thousand-Handed and Thousand-Eyed Guanyin Bodhisattva.” It consists of eighty-four phrases, and its full title is: “The Great Compassion Divine Mantra from the Dharani Sutra of the Vast, Perfect, Unimpeded Great Compassionate Mind of the Thousand-Handed and Thousand-Eyed Guanyin Bodhisattva.” Its name originates from the Buddha’s explanation to the Venerable Ananda: “This divine mantra has various names: one is Vast and Perfect; one is Unimpeded Great Compassion; one is Dharani for Saving from Suffering; one is Dharani for Extending Life; one is Dharani for Extinguishing Evil Destinies; one is Dharani for Destroying Karmic Obstacles; one is Dharani for Fulfilling Vows; one is Dharani for Attaining Freedom According to One’s Mind; and one is Dharani for Quickly Transcending the Higher Grounds.” The reason Guanyin Bodhisattva is known as the Thousand-Handed and Thousand-Eyed Guanyin Bodhisattva is as follows: when Guanyin Bodhisattva was still practicing in the Buddha-land of the Tathagata King of Still Abiding in a Thousand Lights, that Tathagata specially taught him the “Dharani of the Vast, Perfect, Unimpeded Great Compassionate Mind” and said to him: “Good man! You should uphold this heart mantra and universally bring great benefit and joy to all sentient beings in the evil ages of the future.” After hearing this mantra, Guanyin Bodhisattva immediately advanced from the First Ground to the Eighth Ground, the Immovable Ground.
