The Great Compassion Dharani contains a total of eighty-four lines of mantra. What follows describes the effect of each line. As long as we recite it reverently, all these effects can be activated, and we may experience them to different degrees depending on the strength of our faith and the purity of our minds. He made a vow, saying: “If, in a future age, I am able to benefit and bring joy to all sentient beings, may I immediately be endowed with a thousand hands and a thousand eyes.” After making this vow, he truly instantly manifested a thousand hands and a thousand eyes. The earth in the ten directions trembled because of it, and all the Buddhas of the ten directions also emitted immeasurable light, illuminating the boundless worlds throughout the ten directions.
Guanyin Bodhisattva once made a vow before the Buddha, saying: “If any human or celestial being sincerely recites my name, they should also recite the name of my original teacher, Amitabha Tathagata, and then recite this miraculous Dharani mantra. If one can recite it five times in a single night, one can eliminate the grave karmic offenses accumulated over hundreds of thousands of millions of eons of birth and death.” It is said to be able to activate the divine power of the heavenly eye. The heavenly eye allows one to see sentient beings in the six realms dying here and being reborn there, and the various forms of suffering they undergo; knowing these things is called the heavenly eye. Once the heavenly eye is opened, the Dharma eye sees through this life, the next life, and all lives after that. If you encounter difficulties, it may help investigate the causes and conditions from your previous life.
