Pros

Can seeing artists from my parents’ generation be considered a benefit?

Cons

The company is overly closed-off internally. Employees have not improved or kept up with the changing times, and information circulates at an astonishing speed—but only when it comes to other people’s private affairs and gossip. You have to be extremely careful when speaking to anyone.

I can’t speak for other departments, but in the department I worked in, the manager has long taken charge of marketing and design. Marketing is treated like an operations and customer-service role, while design is treated like graphic production. Even more unbelievable is that this 15-year-old company completely skips the design proposal process. They draw compositions that are not even to scale. If you understand them, they tell you that you’re great, but once you produce the work, they start changing their own composition again, leaving design absolutely no room to contribute creatively. When I pointed out the lack of a process, the response was, “Wouldn’t that take too much time?” Then they said, “This is my project; I’m the only one who knows what I want.” So it’s reasonable that the company’s Facebook audience has grown with the company over 15 years and is now in the 40–50 age range, right?

The manager criticizes mainstream marketing graphics and copy as “templates,” claiming they have no brand quality whatsoever. But then why are those so-called template-based brands growing so quickly? Shouldn’t the company learn from the methods that have worked for others and apply them to create better results?)

The company uses Pinterest as an image library and requires employees to download and modify other people’s work for commercial purposes. It shows an extreme lack of respect for its own company’s reputation. I’ve heard that in the past, when a designer objected to stealing images, they were told, “If you don’t like it, leave.” This shows that this 15-year-old company has never purchased an asset library for designers to use and has no concept of intellectual property rights! If the company genuinely wants to improve employee education, please first understand the principle that “to do good work, one must first sharpen one’s tools,” and stop being so stingy!
