Cons

1. The job description on 104 is for reference only and contains a bunch of “duties assigned by the supervisor.” You are often given work unrelated to your expertise. When you point out that this differs from what was discussed in the interview, you are met with lines such as: “We’re giving you an opportunity to learn,” “The company’s needs come first,” “If you don’t do it, who will?” and “There have never been clear divisions between positions in this company; your thinking is too narrow.”

2. Shh, the company’s organizational structure is confidential and cannot be discussed.

3. Shh, the boss doesn’t like employees from different companies asking each other about their respective situations (yet they arrange for you to work in the same office, where everyone can hear what is being said—how clever).

4. “It’s okay if you don’t know; you can learn after you join.” But no one trains you or checks in with you. The boss hired you to solve problems, not create them, so you have to figure it out yourself.

5. They don’t hire a general affairs employee to save money. Administrative duties, accounting, HR, and even MIS can all be handled by one person.

6. You are expected to work “from home” on typhoon days.

7. The boss repeatedly changes decisions because a group of so-called “friends” offer suggestions. Your opinion had better be the same as the “friends’,” or you will be harshly reprimanded.

8. Mid-level employees cannot stay. The boss takes over management personally and likes hiring young people, but they lack experience and are taught haphazardly after joining.

9. Handle immediately whatever the boss cares about. If an issue concerns something the boss does not care about, solve it yourself and do not report it upward, because the boss’s attention should be focused on more important matters.
