Pros

May the three obstacles and all afflictions be eliminated; may wisdom and true understanding be attained. May all karmic hindrances be completely eradicated, and may I always practice the bodhisattva path, life after life. Form is not different from emptiness. Emptiness is not different from form. Form itself is emptiness. Emptiness itself is form. Shariputra, all phenomena are characterized by emptiness. They neither arise nor cease; they are neither defiled nor pure. The mind is without obstruction. Because there is no obstruction, there is no fear. Far removed from inverted views and deluded dreams. All Buddhas of the three times, relying on prajnaparamita, attain anuttara-samyak-sambodhi. Therefore know that prajnaparamita is the great miraculous mantra, the mantra of great illumination, the supreme mantra, the incomparable mantra, capable of removing all suffering, true and not false. Therefore the prajnaparamita mantra is spoken thus: Gate gate paragate parasamgate bodhi svaha. Wei Xu, moving and possessing the heavenly-eye spiritual power. Gate gate paragate parasamgate bodhi svaha. Wei Xu, moving and possessing the heavenly-eye spiritual power? Gate gate paragate parasamgate bodhi svaha. The Great Compassion Mantra is an important verbal formula embodying Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva’s great compassionate mind, unsurpassed bodhicitta, and the aspiration to aid and liberate the world and awaken to unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. Each phrase expresses a great vow, and every vow exerts its power. The Great Compassion Mantra is the principal portion of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva’s “Nīlakaṇṭha Dhāraṇī Sutra,” and consists of eighty-four phrases. Its full name is “The Great Compassionate Divine Mantra of the Thousand-Handed and Thousand-Eyed Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva’s Vast, Perfect, Unobstructed Great Compassionate Mind Dhāraṇī Sutra.” Its name derives from the Buddha’s words to the Venerable Ananda: “This divine mantra has various names: one is Vast and Perfect; one is Unobstructed Great Compassion; one is the Dhāraṇī for Saving from Suffering; one is the Dhāraṇī for Extending Life; one is the Dhāraṇī for Eradicating the Evil Destinies; one is the Dhāraṇī for Destroying Karmic Hindrances; one is the Dhāraṇī for Fulfilling Vows; one is the Dhāraṇī for Freedom According to One’s Mind; and one is the Dhāraṇī for Quickly Transcending the Higher Grounds.” The reason Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva is known as the Thousand-Handed and Thousand-Eyed Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva is as follows: when Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva was still practicing in the Buddha-land of the Tathagata King of Quiet Abiding in a Thousand Lights, that Tathagata specially taught him the “Vast, Perfect, Unobstructed Great Compassionate Mind Dhāraṇī” and said to him: “Good man! You should uphold this heart mantra and, for all sentient beings of the future evil age, bring great benefit and joy.” After hearing this mantra, Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva immediately advanced from the First Ground to the Eighth Ground, the Immovable Ground.

Cons

The Great Compassion Mantra contains eighty-four mantra phrases in total; what follows describes the function of each phrase. As long as we recite them reverently, we can activate all these functions, and, depending on the strength of our faith and the degree of our purity, experience their effects to varying degrees. He made a vow, saying: “If, in the ages to come, I can benefit and bring joy to all sentient beings, may I immediately be born with a thousand hands and a thousand eyes.” After making this vow, he indeed instantly manifested a thousand hands and a thousand eyes. The earth in the ten directions trembled, and all the Buddhas of the ten directions also emitted immeasurable light, illuminating the boundless worlds throughout the ten directions. Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva once vowed before the Buddha: “If any human or heavenly being sincerely recites my name, they should also recite the name of my original teacher, Amitabha Tathagata, and then recite this divine dhāraṇī mantra. If they can recite it five times in one night, they can eliminate grave offenses accumulated over hundreds of thousands of millions of eons of birth and death. Wei Xu, moving and possessing the heavenly-eye spiritual power. The heavenly-eye spiritual power means seeing sentient beings in the six realms die here and be reborn there, seeing the forms of the suffering they undergo, and knowing all these various things; this is called the heavenly-eye spiritual power. Once the heavenly-eye spiritual power is opened, this life, the next life, and the life after that cannot escape the eye of the Dharma. If you have difficulties, it can help you investigate the causes and conditions from past lives.
