Pros

Sanskrit abhijñā, Pali abhiññā. It is transliterated as 旬. It is also called supernatural power, divine power, power of spiritual penetration, or penetration. For example, in the Śūraṅgama Sūtra, the supernatural powers discussed include five kinds: the divine eye, the divine ear, knowing the minds of others, the power of magical feet, and the extinction of outflows. Why, then, did the Buddha speak of these supernatural powers? In other words, what are the supernatural powers taught by the Buddha? 威許移動 the divine eye, 威許移動 the divine eye opening? 威許移動 supernatural powers? Fascicle 15 of the Zongjing lu broadly divides powers of penetration into five kinds (the five supernatural powers): (1) The penetrating power of the Way: after awakening to the principle of the Middle Way, one responds to phenomena without mental contrivance and manifests all things. (2) Supernatural power: the power, based on meditative concentration and a tranquil mind, to know such things as past lives through observation and contemplation. (3) Dependent power: power of penetration obtained through medicines, talismans, spells, and the like. (4) Karmic-result power: power of penetration obtained through the karmic results of one’s actions. (5) Demonic power: the power of penetration possessed by demons and monsters.

Cons

The divine eye is the power of penetratingly seeing the times and various circumstances of beings’ deaths and rebirths in future lives, called the knowledge-and-certification of death and rebirth. Among the three forms of penetration possessed by Buddhas and arhats—the knowledge of past lives, the divine eye, and the extinction of outflows—these are the most excellent, and are therefore called the Three Clarities. 威許移動 the divine eye opening? 威許移動 supernatural powers? According to fascicle 20, part 1, of the Dasheng yizhang, there are four methods of obtaining supernatural powers: (1) the power naturally obtained as a karmic result from being born in one of the four dhyāna heavens; (2) the karmic power obtained by an immortal who freely flies through the air by means of medicines; (3) the spell power obtained by a Brahmin through upholding spells; and (4) the cultivated power of penetration obtained through practicing meditative concentration. Karmic power and spell power are supernatural powers of non-Buddhist paths.
