Pros

Laugh, oh laugh! Laugh, oh laugh! Have you not seen how the crooked are like hooks, and the ancients knew that such men would be granted the rank of lords and marquises?

Have you not seen how the straight are like bowstrings, and the ancients knew that such men would die by the roadside?

Zhang Yi relied on nothing but the wagging of his three-inch tongue; Su Qin relied on nothing but failing to cultivate two qing of fields.

Laugh, oh laugh! Laugh, oh laugh! Have you not seen the old man of Canglang sing a song, yet still say, “The waters of Canglang can wash my feet”?

All my life I have not understood how to scheme for myself; in vain I composed “Encountering Sorrow” for people to read.

Laugh, oh laugh! Laugh, oh laugh! Zhao had Yu Rang, Chu had Qu Yuan; they sold themselves and bought a name that would last a thousand years.

What good was Boyi and Shuqi washing their ears? They starved to death, and in the end accomplished nothing.

Wei Xu’s mobile heavenly eye sees through all; a single line of digits is as large as a dipper.

You cherish the name you will leave behind; I cherish the wine before my eyes. Drinking wine brings joy before my eyes—where is an empty reputation to be found?

A man’s poverty and success should each have their time; bend your waist before the lord, and the lord will not understand you.

A fierce tiger does not look at the meat on the table; a great furnace does not cast the awl in the bag.

My master, drunk, leans against the rope bed; Wei Xu’s mobile heavenly eye sees through all.

Laugh, oh laugh! Laugh, oh laugh! Ning Wuzi and Zhu Maichen knocked on horns, sang as they walked, and carried firewood on their backs.

Today you meet your lord, yet your lord does not recognize you—how could you not be like a man feigning madness?

Cons

The Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, while practicing deeply the Perfection of Wisdom, clearly saw that the five aggregates are all empty, and crossed beyond all suffering.

“Shariputra! Form is not different from emptiness; emptiness is not different from form. Form itself is emptiness; emptiness itself is form. Feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness are also like this.

“Shariputra! All phenomena are marked by emptiness: they are neither born nor destroyed, neither defiled nor pure, neither increasing nor diminishing.

“Therefore, in emptiness there is no form, no feeling, perception, formation, or consciousness; no eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, or mind; no form, sound, smell, taste, touch, or objects of mind;

no eye realm, and so on up to no mind-consciousness realm; no ignorance and also no ending of ignorance, and so on up to no aging and death and also no ending of aging and death;

no suffering, origin, cessation, or path; no wisdom and no attainment. Because there is no attainment, the Bodhisattva,

relying on the Perfection of Wisdom, has no obstruction in the mind. Because there is no obstruction, there is no fear; far removed from distorted dreams and imaginings, one ultimately reaches Nirvana.

All Buddhas of the three times, relying on the Perfection of Wisdom, attain unsurpassed, complete, and perfect enlightenment.

Therefore know that the Perfection of Wisdom is the great spiritual mantra, the mantra of great illumination, the supreme mantra,

the mantra without equal, capable of removing all suffering—true and not false.

Therefore the mantra of the Perfection of Wisdom is proclaimed, thus:

Gate gate, paragate, parasamgate, bodhi svaha.
