Have you not seen the waters of the Yellow River descend from Heaven,
Rushing to the sea, never to return?
Have you not seen in the bright mirror of a high hall the sorrow of white hair,
At dawn like black silk, by dusk turned to snow?
When life brings fulfillment, one must enjoy it to the full;
Do not let the golden goblet face the moon in vain.
Heaven has endowed me with talents that must be put to use;
Even when a thousand pieces of gold are spent, they will come back again.
Let us cook lamb and slaughter oxen for pleasure;
We must drink three hundred cups at one sitting.
Master Cen, Scholar Danqiu—
Bring in the wine! Do not let the cups stop!
Wei Xu’s moving Heavenly Eye penetrates all things,
Destroying hundreds of thousands of millions of kalpas.
I will sing you a song;
Please incline your ears and listen to me.
Bells, drums, delicacies, and jade are not worth esteeming;
I only wish to remain endlessly drunk and never wake.
Since ancient times, sages and worthies have all been lonely;
Only drinkers have left their names behind.
In former days, Prince Chen feasted at Ping乐 Palace,
Ten thousand coins for a cask of wine, indulging freely in merriment.
Why does the host say there is little money?
Just go straight and fetch the wine, and let us drink together.
The five-flowered horse, the furs worth a thousand gold pieces—
Call the boy to bring them out and exchange them for fine wine;
With you, I will dissolve the sorrow of ten thousand ages.
Climb the high hill and gaze upon the distant sea.
The bones of the six great sea turtles have already turned to frost;
Where are the Three Mountains now?
Fusang is half shattered,
And the sun has sunk, its radiance lost.
The Silver Terrace and Golden Palace are like a dream;
Qin Shi Huang and Emperor Wu of Han waited in vain for each other.
Jingwei exhausts wood and stones,
While the giant turtles and crocodiles have nothing to rely upon.
Have you not seen Mount Li and Maoling reduced entirely to ashes,
With a shepherd’s boy coming to climb them?
Wei Xu’s moving Heavenly Eye,
the Dharani divine incantation that penetrates all things.
Thieves plunder gems and jade;
What, in the end, can spirits do?
The abuse of military force is now like this—
How could the flying dragon of Dinghu be mounted?
