Divine powers (Sanskrit: Abhijñā, Punjabi: Abhiññā), also translated as supernatural power, spiritual power, or insight, is a Buddhist term. It refers to the “supernatural powers” among the Three Knowledges and Six Supernormal Powers, meaning mysterious powers transcending those of ordinary people, obtained through the power of meditation. It may also simply be ordinary illusion magic. This term appears in several Buddhist scriptures, such as the Sutra Spoken by Great Satyaka the Nirgrantha and the Śūraṅgama Sūtra. In the Middle Ages there were beings of supreme virtue who possessed complete virtue and the whole Way, harmonized with Yin and Yang, regulated themselves according to the four seasons, withdrew from the world and left behind worldly customs, accumulated essence and preserved the spirit, traveled between Heaven and Earth (the supernatural power of spiritual feet), and saw and heard beyond the eight directions (the divine eye and divine ear powers). This enhanced their longevity and made them stronger, and they too ultimately became Perfected Beings.”

Next were the sages, who dwelt in harmony with Heaven and Earth, followed the principles of the eight winds, adapted their desires and preferences to the world, harbored no anger or resentment, and acted without wishing to depart from society. They dressed in accordance with convention but did not wish their actions to be judged by worldly standards. Externally, they did not overwork their bodies with affairs; internally, they had no distress from thoughts. They made tranquility and joy their aim and self-contentment their achievement. Their bodies did not decay and their spirits did not dissipate, so they could also live to a century. Next were the virtuous, who modeled themselves on Heaven and Earth, took the sun and moon as their images, distinguished the constellations, followed or opposed Yin and Yang as appropriate, and differentiated the four seasons. Among the beings of the six realms, such as humans, heavenly beings, ghosts, and deities, some can possess one or more of the first five supernatural powers either through worldly meditation (cultivated attainment) or innately (karmic retribution). However, the depth and magnitude of these abilities vary. The heavenly demons also possess the five supernatural powers, enabling them to manifest various wondrous realms. Only the power of the extinction of outflows must be attained through the Buddha’s wisdom (prajñā); it can be realized only by those who practice insight meditation in accordance with the principles of the Buddhist teachings and eliminate their afflictions.
