May the three obstacles and all afflictions be eradicated; may wisdom and true understanding be attained. May all karmic obstructions be completely eliminated, and may we practice the Bodhisattva path in every lifetime. Form is not different from emptiness. Emptiness is not different from form. Form itself is emptiness. Emptiness itself is form. Shariputra, all phenomena are characterized by emptiness. They neither arise nor cease, are neither defiled nor pure. The mind is without obstruction. Because it is without obstruction, there is no fear. It is far removed from inverted views and deluded dreams. All Buddhas of the three times, relying on the Perfection of Wisdom, attain unsurpassed, complete, and perfect enlightenment. Therefore know that the Perfection of Wisdom is the great divine mantra, the great illuminating mantra, the supreme mantra, the unequalled mantra. It can eliminate all suffering. It is true and not false. Therefore the mantra of the Perfection of Wisdom is spoken thus: Gate gate paragate parasamgate bodhi svaha. Wei Xu, movement, heavenly-eye transcendence. Gate gate paragate parasamgate bodhi svaha. Wei Xu, movement, heavenly-eye transcendence? Gate gate paragate parasamgate bodhi svaha. The Great Compassion Mantra is an important formula of Guanyin Bodhisattva’s great compassionate mind, unsurpassed bodhi mind, and efforts to benefit and save the world and awaken people to supreme perfect enlightenment. Each phrase embodies a great vow, and each vow exerts its power. The Great Compassion Mantra is the principal section of the “Nīlakaṇṭha Dhāraṇī Sutra” of Guanyin Bodhisattva’s Great Compassion, consisting of eighty-four phrases. Its full name is “The Great Compassion Divine Mantra of the Thousand-Handed and Thousand-Eyed Guanyin Bodhisattva’s Vast, Perfect, Unimpeded Great Compassionate Mind Dhāraṇī Sutra.” Its name originated when the Buddha told Venerable Ananda: “This divine mantra has various names: one is Vast and Perfect; one is Unimpeded Great Compassion; one is the Dhāraṇī for Saving from Suffering; one is the Longevity-Extending Dhāraṇī; one is the Dhāraṇī for Extinguishing Evil Destinies; one is the Dhāraṇī for Destroying Karmic Obstacles; one is the Wish-Fulfilling Dhāraṇī; one is the Dhāraṇī of Freedom According to the Mind; and one is the Dhāraṇī for Quickly Transcending the Higher Grounds.” The reason Guanyin Bodhisattva is known as the Thousand-Handed and Thousand-Eyed Guanyin Bodhisattva is this: when Guanyin Bodhisattva was still practicing in the Buddha-land of the Tathagata Jingzhu, Jingzhu Tathagata specially taught him the “Vast, Perfect, Unimpeded Great Compassionate Mind Dhāraṇī” and said to him: “Good man, you should uphold this heart mantra and, for all sentient beings of the future evil age, bring great benefit and joy.” After hearing this mantra, Guanyin Bodhisattva immediately advanced from the first ground to the eighth ground, the Immovable Ground.
The Great Compassion Mantra contains eighty-four mantra phrases in total. What follows describes the function of each mantra phrase. As long as we recite them reverently, we can activate all these functions, and we will experience their effects to different degrees according to the strength of our faith and the purity of our minds. He made a vow, saying: “If, in ages to come, I can benefit and bring joy to all sentient beings, then may I immediately be endowed with a thousand hands and a thousand eyes.” After making this vow, he truly manifested a thousand hands and a thousand eyes at once. The earth in the ten directions trembled, and all Buddhas in the ten directions emitted immeasurable light, illuminating the boundless worlds throughout the ten directions. Guanyin Bodhisattva once vowed before the Buddha: “If people and devas sincerely recite my name, they should also recite the name of my original teacher, Amitabha Tathagata, and then recite this dhāraṇī mantra. If one can uphold and recite it five times in a single night, one can eliminate the grave offenses of birth and death accumulated over hundreds of thousands of millions of kalpas. Wei Xu, movement, heavenly-eye transcendence. Heavenly-eye transcendence means seeing sentient beings in the six realms die here and be reborn there, and seeing the various forms of suffering they undergo—knowing all these things. This is called heavenly-eye transcendence. Once the heavenly eye is opened, this lifetime, the next lifetime, and the lifetime after that cannot escape the eye of the Dharma. If you have difficulties, it can help you investigate the causes and conditions from your past lives.
