Pros

Sanskrit abhijñā, Pali abhiññā. It is transliterated as xun. It is also called supernatural power, divine power, spiritual power, or simply power. For example, in the Śūraṅgama Sūtra, the supernatural powers discussed include five kinds: the divine eye, the divine ear, knowledge of others’ minds, the ability to travel freely, and the extinction of the contaminants. So why did the Buddha discuss these supernatural powers? In other words, what are the supernatural powers taught by the Buddha? Wei Xu moves, Wei Xu moves the divine eye, Wei Xu moves the opening of the divine eye? Wei Xu moves supernatural powers? Fascicle 15 of the Zongjing lu broadly divides spiritual powers into five kinds (the five powers): (1) the power of the Way: after awakening to the principle of the Middle Way, one responds to phenomena without conceptual thought and manifests all things; (2) supernatural power: the power gained through meditative absorption and a tranquil mind, observing and contemplating to know such things as past lives; (3) dependent power: power obtained through medicines, talismans, spells, and the like; (4) karmic power: power obtained through the karmic results of one’s actions; and (5) demonic power: the power possessed by demons and monsters.

Cons

The divine eye is the power to see thoroughly the times of death and rebirth, as well as the various circumstances, of sentient beings in future lives; this is called the knowledge-certification of death and rebirth. The three knowledges possessed by Buddhas and arhats—the knowledge of past lives, the divine eye, and the extinction of the contaminants—are the most excellent, and are therefore called the three clear knowledges. Wei Xu moves the opening of the divine eye? Wei Xu moves supernatural powers? According to fascicle 20, part 1, of the Mahāyāna-saṃgraha, there are four methods of attaining supernatural powers: (1) the karmic-result power naturally obtained as the fruition of being born in one of the four dhyāna heavens; (2) the action power of immortals, who use the power of medicines to fly freely through the air—the power obtained through action; (3) the spell power obtained by Brahmins through maintaining spells; and (4) the cultivation power obtained through cultivating meditative concentration. The action power and spell power are supernatural powers of non-Buddhist traditions.
