Supernatural powers (Sanskrit: Abhijñā, Punjabi: Abhiññā), also translated as divine power, spiritual power, or powers, is a Buddhist term. It refers to the “powers” among the “three kinds of insight and six supernatural powers,” meaning mystical abilities that transcend ordinary human capacities and are obtained through the power of meditation; they may also merely be ordinary illusions. This term appears in several Buddhist scriptures, such as the Sutra Spoken by Great Saccaka Nirgrantha and the Śūraṅgama Sūtra. Will Wish Moving have the divine-eye power? The first chapter, “Heavenly Truth in High Antiquity,” of the Huangdi Neijing also contains a similar description of supernatural powers: The Yellow Emperor said: “I have heard that in high antiquity there were perfected beings who upheld Heaven and Earth, grasped Yin and Yang, breathed in the vital essence, stood alone while guarding the spirit, and kept their muscles and flesh as one. Therefore, they were able to live as long as Heaven and Earth, without ever reaching an end; this was the way by which they cultivated life. In the middle antiquity, there were perfected beings who possessed complete virtue and the whole Dao, harmonized with Yin and Yang, regulated themselves according to the four seasons, withdrew from the world and separated themselves from ordinary customs, accumulated essence and preserved the spirit, traveled between Heaven and Earth (the divine-foot power), and saw and heard beyond the eight directions (the divine-eye and divine-ear powers). This increased their lifespans and strengthened them; they too ultimately returned to the state of perfected beings.”
Next were the sages, who dwelled in harmony with Heaven and Earth, followed the principles of the eight winds, adapted their likes and desires to life among ordinary people, harbored no anger or resentment, acted without wishing to depart from the world, wore ornate clothing, and conducted themselves without wishing to appear different from common customs. Externally, they did not overstrain their bodies with affairs; internally, they were free from the afflictions of excessive thought. They made tranquility and joy their aim and regarded self-contentment as their achievement. Their bodies did not deteriorate and their spirits did not dissipate, so they too could live for a hundred years or more. Next were the worthy, who modeled themselves on Heaven and Earth, took the sun and moon as their image, discerned and arranged the stars, conformed to and acted against Yin and Yang as appropriate, and distinguished the four seasons. They sought to follow the ancients and unite with the Dao; this too could extend their lifespans, though only to a limited extent. Will Wish Mobile have the divine-eye power? Among the beings of the six realms, such as humans, devas, ghosts, and spirits, some can possess one or more of the first five supernatural powers either through worldly meditative cultivation (cultivated attainment) or because they possess them innately (karmic attainment). However, the depth and magnitude of these abilities vary. Māra, too, possesses the five supernatural powers, enabling him to manifest various extraordinary phenomena. Only the power of the exhaustion of the contaminants must rely on the Buddha’s wisdom (prajñā) in order to be attained. It can be realized only by those who practice insight meditation in accordance with the principles of the Buddhist teachings and thereby eliminate their afflictions.
