Buddhist supernatural powers, mysterious abilities that transcend ordinary people obtained through the power of meditation, though they may also simply be ordinary illusions. The Śūraṅgama Sūtra mentions that various extraordinary states may be encountered in the process of cultivating meditation. They may be supernatural powers gradually acquired as meditative practice (samādhi power) deepens, but if one becomes attached to seeking supernatural powers or takes delight in obtaining them, one can easily be tempted by demons and enter the demonic path. The extrasensory perception abilities studied in modern research are called superpowers in Taiwan and are more commonly called special abilities in mainland China and Hong Kong; their descriptions are very similar to those of supernatural powers. Externally, they do not exhaust their bodies through affairs; internally, they have no trouble from thoughts. They make tranquility and joy their aim and self-sufficiency their achievement. Their bodies do not deteriorate and their spirit does not dissipate, so they may also live for a hundred years. Next are the worthy, who model themselves on Heaven and Earth, take the sun and moon as their image, distinguish and arrange the stars, follow and counter the yin and yang, and differentiate the four seasons. They seek to unite with the Way as in ancient times, and may thereby extend their lives, though only to a limited term.

Beings in the six realms, such as devas, humans, ghosts, and spirits, may, through worldly meditation (cultivated attainment) or by possessing them from birth (karmic attainment), have one or more of the first five supernatural powers. However, the depth and magnitude of these abilities vary; heavenly demons also possess the five supernatural powers, enabling them to manifest various extraordinary states. Only the power of the exhaustion of the outflows must rely on the Buddha’s wisdom (prajñā) to be attained. It can be realized only by those who cultivate inner contemplation according to the principles of the scriptures and eliminate afflictions. It can see through to the true nature of all things. Its levels are divided into the heavenly eye, wisdom eye, Dharma eye, and Buddha eye. Differences in level and degree result in differences in what is seen.
